Daniel, your medal is coming together and so before I put the finishing touches, I thought this might be a good time to just go over some of the requirements for this swap.

As I understand it, this needs to be a piece that someone could wear however, hopefully, not necessarily that anyone in their right mind would want to wear. Am I right on that?

Also, although someone could wear this medal, I'm hoping that they wouldn't expect to wear it out say, in a rain storm, or through a car wash, and have it come back looking at all like it did when it went out.

Finally, thinking back to a comment you made near the beginning of this thread, re-the medal you are making, should I have my doctor on alert for a possible blood sugar test in the not too distant future?

LOL, GC! I'm managing to show a bit of restraint on the 'sugar sweet', but it's still 'cute'. With the beads, I'm finding this medal wants to be a bit more bling-y than I usually do. Have to see where it leads me.

Far as your good questions? Here's my take...

Wearability. That's been a feature since our first medal round, but doesn't mean the medal has to be a particular size, shape or style.

Durability. While I don't make mine to survive the pyramids, mine are not overly fragile. Paper & CS may (for me) need to be sealed, but that's my choice.

How's everyones medals coming along?

GC, I've made most of my medals, except for the last one- that was done on a canvas out of grunge paper. I'm not sure how well they have held up or would hold up if worn!?

I've used pinbacks and or magnets on some of mine. I made one for Daniel that he could use as a magnet if he chose.

I've got most of the prep work for mine done and am really liking it so far. I hope I can get it finished today or sometime this week.

As far as beads go, they could be anything. Flat, round, seed, gems. Lots of possibilities!

Yeah. I got a chuckle out of GC's comment, too.

Mine is still a WIP, but the progress is happening--& not too slowly. But! Don't sweat GC! I'm not rushing it.

I made the 'ribbon element' yesterday. Wasn't at all sure I liked the results, but it had to dry overnight & when I checked it today? I find I rather like it. 'Course I can see a dozen different ways to do it now, but not gonna play that game.

Now for a 'funny'... Along with the Halloween stamp images I got from AJ, she rak'd me a 2-image clear stamp set. One image turned out to be just what my medal 'needed'.

LOL! Pays to take challenges & join swaps!

Your medal is finished Daniel. Like you and the one you are working on, there are things I could re-do or different-do but overall I like it (hope you do to).

Now I just have to make some packaging for it, take some photos, and get it off...there is still a lot of time but, since the kids are returning from vacation on Monday and the house will get more crazy again, I think I'd like to get it off before then if possible.

I hearya on the 'get it mailed', GC. Like you, I want to make a holder/protector even tho' it's pretty flexible.

Found I couldn't 'live' with the way I did an attachment. Just bugs me to much. Going to re-do that. Matter-of-fact? I just did. Like it much better!

Mine should go out tuesday. We have no mail monday for the holiday.

I've been wondering how everyone was doing on their medals. I haven't started mine yet, but will be over the weekend. I've chosen my stamp, my materials and general look of things. I wonder if I'll stick with the plan?

Got my medal (& so much more) from GC today! It's awesome!

Can't wait until Joanne puts it up in her gallery so we can praise it!

And... Also got my Oct. tag from Ashjoy. Very spooky connection with GC's medal...

The mail race between Daniel and I is over and it's a tie. We both received our medals from one another yesterday.

I've posted mine (that I sent to him) in the gallery and I'm linking it to this thread if anyone wants to have a look.

Halloween Medal Project

As I explained to Daniel when I sent it, there are a few things I'd do differently, if I were doing this again but overall it was a fun experience and I wasn't too unhappy with the result.

Daniel sent me a very cute medal with blingy seed beads and sequins but I will leave it to him to post the pictures and construction details as he sees fit.

Now I'm just waiting to see all the works of art the rest of you turn out.

LOL! My medal 'presentation' amounted to putting it in its envelope & wishing it 'Godspeed'. It got to GC intact, so I'm content.

I kept mine pretty simple & was pleased that I was able to go with paper & CS as the primary material.

I absolutely love what GC made me! And her medal holder is perfect for Heidi's inside challenge. Plus... Joanne rak'd me with a wonderful stamp!

Might be awhile, but I can see doing another medal swap before we end 2013.

Joanne and Daniel, fabulous work!!! I love your medals you made!

2 things I realized while reading your descriptions-
1-From Joanne's medal,I've never stamped on ribbon before. I need to try that!
2-From Daniel's medal. He colored his image after he fussy cut it out. I always do the opposite!

AJ, I sometimes cant find mojo when trying to create my medal. I usually have to let it ponder a bit!

Pug. I stamped, colored & then fussy cut the bear. I glazed after I fussy cut the image. That said, however, I do often do more color 'tweaking' once I've done fussy-cutting.

Yes! GC's stamped/embossed ribbon is awesome IRL! I truly thot it was hot stamped by the manufacturer. Joanne is a great crafter!

Thanks to everyone for the nice things you had to say about my project.
Heidi I don't know if I was made for this challenge but I do like halloween stamps and images, just wish I got to do more of them. My second favourite is Christmas but what I am really struggling with these days are birthday cards...can't seem to get into them and of course those are the cards people are asking for.

The stamping on ribbon took a little experimenting so, for anyone who wants to try it, I'll give you some info about the failures.

My first try I used Stayz On ink. Since the ribbon appeared shinny I figured something that had holding power would be good. Big Mistake! The ink soaked right into the ribbon and sort of spread out leaving blurred fuzzy edges. Then I tried black pigment ink with clear embossing, this was better but still didn't give a real crisp look. Finally versamark ink and black embossing powder seemed to do the best at keeping a nice sharp defined image.

Of course, that was with this particular ribbon it may vary with different kinds but thinking about it now I think the Stayz on is probably not going to be a good choice for any fabric. Its ability to penetrate is probably what makes it work on shiny surfaces but also what will make it bleed on permeable ones.

Joanne. Thanx for sharing (here) all your trys for stamping the ribbon. I have tons of 'hot stamped' ribbons from my former employer & I truly can't see (or feel) a difference.

Now... When I stamp on wovens--fabric or ribbon--I get the best results when I stablize the material. Use a piece of plastic-coated freezer paper & a warm dry iron. Lay the fabric then cover with the freezer paper--plastic side on the material. Press on the paper side for a few seconds & the paper will hold to the fabric. Now stamp just like stamping on paper. I love solvent ink on fabric. Staz-On is my go-to if I want the piece to be washable.

Wanted to clarify another aspect of my medal on our thread since it relates to using beads (a requirement).

I used actual (tiny) clear seed beads on the medal's 'ribbon'. They look orange because I used orange (dimensional) paint to adhere them to the paper base. HTH

I did try to get a close up shot of the beads on your medal, Daniel, that showed their clear nature but it is hard to see in the photo since the orange under colour really shows through.

Interesting that you like the Staz-On for fabric while I didn't have luck with it. When you use the freezer paper technique, do you actually leave a thin layer of plastic on top of the fabric do you think? I'm wondering if that would be why your Staz-on doesn't bleed out into the surrounding fabric like mine seemed to.

Joanne. I'll try to answer your questions about the freezer paper technique.

When I press freezer paper (plastic-coated) to fabric/clothing, it is always on the reverse of the fabric. It keeps the material from shifting--especially tee-shirt material.

Far as bleeding? StazOn has not been an ink that bleeds for me, but lots depends on the actual fabric--weave & fibre content. My best stamping results usually involve 100% cotton, but some blends work well. I prefer woven to knits, but thin knits like tee-shirt work pretty well most times. HTH

Heidi. your comment about having it finished and 'drying' reminded me of the time I finished a birthday card for my sister really last minute, wrote a little note on it, stuck it in the envelope and went off to her Birthday get-together only to discover that there must have been a little edge of undried glue on the card, when I put it in the envelope because, when she opened it, it was stuck inside the envelope.

We had to tear the envelope and sort of pull it off the card.

I told her that at least she knew the card was 'fresh' and made just for her not one I had sitting around for just anyone but I still felt like a bit of a putz !

LOL, Joanne! Love your 'fresh' story! I found out the hard way (many years ago) that dimensional paint takes time to really 'dry'. It may feel dry to the touch & still be soft on the inside. And heat guns only make the problem worse.

Looks like we're doing ok, but a reminder... Our medals should be in the mail by this coming friday--9/20.
