Personally, I think calling them "jackasses" is too kind.

Call me harsh, but it's a shame that it didn't hit the one videotaping.

Referring to them as "jackasses" is an insult to male donkeys everywhere. We have a "guard donkey" and he's certainly more intelligent and higher on the evolutionary ladder than those idiots.

What gross behavior.

Sadly, I am glad of two things in this situation:
1. They don't appear to be from Alabama
2. It wasn't Americans behaving in such a way in another country

Stuff like this pisses me off.

If any of those were my kid that had better not ask me for another thing.

Some dumbass teenagers around here pushed over a 100 year old Civil War statue. I called my kids out to the living room to see the story and told them if they ever did something like that they had better pray the police arrested them without bail because their lives would be living hell at home.

OMG. That's horrible! I'd call them douchebags.

Goblin Valley is one of my top-10 parks in the USA. We stumbled upon in on our way through Utah, after leaving Arches. It was one of those, "hey, we're driving by, let's check it out" kind of stops. <3 it, it's a fabulous and little used place. I highly recommend it. In a state with some amazing parks, it's really as good as many of the "big name" national parks. So what a bunch of absolute losers.

Oh, it gets better. The jackass was there with his scouts. Yes, he is a scout leader. Saw his interview right now on KSL (a LDS owned TV station) about his regrets, but he saw it as a "safety hazard". Bull! What about the countless other rock formations? There are dangers in nature jack ass! He should know that being ummm a scout leader.

He really doesn't want to be charged with a felony because he would be kicked out of scouting.

ETA: I'm trying to find some kind of link on KSL with this guy's interview or any story on their website about this incident. So far, no luck. I do suck at searching so it's possible I haven't found it yet.

ETA: I'm not clear if he was there with his scouts, but he was with 2 other scout leaders.

Is It Spring Yet?

It really didn't take much for that fat turd to knock it over. He's right about possibly saving some little kid's life. That thing was ready to go in the next windstorm. But his excitement over it is a bit douchey.

If that rock formation had been there for 200 million years, I don't think it was a safety hazard. Nature IS dangerous, if you can't deal with it, stay in a city!

He's not right. Goblin Valley is FULL of those hoodoos, all the same. What, are we going to knock them all down? There's full-time rangers on site monitoring the formations. There is extremely little danger of any "little kid" getting hurt.

SMH.

Jerk! And he's a scout leader? He should be kicked out- felony charges or not. Does he not know the meaning of "Leave No Trace?" He better go back to the basics.

We went to Arches this summer, and wanted to stop by Goblin Valley, but ran out of time.

Out here we have some much larger hoodoos that have been "reinforced" with cement to make sure they aren't safety issues. I'm sure the part rangers could do that if they thought people were in danger with this one!

I hope they slap him with a big ass fine and forbid him to enter any state parks, national parks or historical sites.

BSA should kick his ass out. What a piss poor example he is on several levels.

The fact that he is a Scout leader is appalling. I saw this story this morning on FB and was stunned. What is "funny" is that the article I saw said immediately after he ruined it, he said he regretted his actions and wished he had told a ranger instead. Sounds like he regrets it now that he is (hopefully!) going to get in trouble!

What a loser.

There are no words to describe how disgusting their actions are.

I do not believe for one second they "regret" their actions... they regret getting caught.
Cuz, hey man, "it's all about saving lives here at Goblin State Park".

That angers and sickens me. We took a trip to Canada when my son was little and stopped in Drumheller. We drove out to see the hoodoos and my son was fascinated, but never even considered climbing up on them. Knowing they had been there for such a long time just gave you a feeling of reverence and gratitude for being able to see it. We imagined the dinosaurs wandering around the valley. Child safety my butt. They just want to push things over.

I hope they do charge them to set an example.

Just horrible and other words I cannot say on this board.
They should be fined, kicked out of scouting, and made to do several hours of work in the park. Idiots!! And treat them like kids write 1000 times, I will not deface park property.

I hope they are feeling such shame over this now. As far as I'm concerned they ASKED for it when they videotaped this thoughtlessness. Grown men acting....not even sure what age this would be. Wow.

I knew someone would say that. (Please, anyone with that opinion, stay out of our parks!) No, he is not right. His role was to instruct and supervise, not to change or destroy. There are all sorts of "dangers" in natural places and you don't go destroying them because it was possibly saving a life. You respect it.

That is disgusting.

And I don't buy his pathetic excuse for one freaking minute. If any of them actually thought that they were doing some fabulous public service by eliminating a safety concern, then they should have spoken to someone about it, not decided to vandalize the park as some sort of convoluted public safety measure on their own.

Does he not know the meaning of "Leave No Trace?"

that was disgusting to watch. Nature in most cases is inherently dangerous. Teach your kids to respect nature when they're older and when they're younger it's up to you as a parent to protect them.

If you pouch in a federal park you have prison time, lose your guns and pay HUGE fines.

If this was in a federal park, it would be nice if the judge or courts gave out a similar type of sentence, those yahoo idiots should never again be allowed to lead boy scouts either.

I hope those idiots are prosecuted, heavily fined, sentenced to major community service, and banned from national and state parks for life.

I would like to thank them for reaffirming my decision to never support the BSA in any way, though. So glad my kids were never in the charge of people like this.

I too think its disgusting. and I don't for one second think he did it because it was a hazard to someone, that it could have fallen on them.. yeah maybe it would have fallen, but if/when that happened it would have been most likely during a storm, and I doubt anyone would be there during a storm.

and as a scout leader isnt he supposed to embrace nature? and teach kids the joys and dangers of nature? does he think all the trees in the woods should be cut down too? cause a tree could fall on a kid. or hey now that that rock is on the ground a kid could climb on it and fall off.. or trip and hit their head on it,so Iguess the rock(and all the others) need to be totally moved away right?

ughh

I think calling him a "jackass" is much too mild. I have a few choice words to describe him, but probably shouldn't use them on this board.

When I first began reading the story I was very angry. Upon further reading I learned he was a Boy Scout Leader (WTF?) and later that he had an adult son that was with him in the video.

I can't tell ages of people who are obese. I thought this guy was mid to late twenties. Getting to the end of the story and realizing he was an ADULT, well by then I was spitting nails.

An adult, Boy Scout leader should know better than to destroy a 200
million year old rock formation in a State Park. Aren't they supposed to be all about respecting nature? And what adult actually considers this in any way, shape or form to be okay?

The way they were acting in that video had absolutely nothing to do with being worried about someone being hurt by that rock in the future. That's a lame excuse they came up with when they got caught.

What a waste of oxygen this jackass is. I hope they charge all 3 of them with felonies, kick him out of the Boy Scouts for good, and ban all 3 of them from entering any Federal or State Parks for the rest of their lives.

Oh, and that lawsuit? Ha! I hope this video bites him in the ass and that lawsuit is dropped like a stone. The man it was filed against should sue this asswipe back for everything he can.

The park is fairly big, and FULL of these rock formations. It's an AMAZING place- we love Goblin Valley! Just to give a point of reference, asking where the park ranger was that monitors the formations is kind of like asking where the ranger was that was supposed to be monitoring a particular tree in a 4.5 square mile forest. It just wouldn't be possible for the rangers to keep eyes on everything at once.

Goblin Valley is only a couple hours from me, so this is fairly local. It's all over the local news. (And yes, Iscrapcrap, it's on KSL too- not sure what you were trying to insinuate there, but it is on their website and I saw it on their newscast.) People here are MAD. This guy has actually received a bunch of death threats. No charges have been filed yet, but they are expected.

I just don't know what goes through some people's heads sometimes. If they were truly concerned that it was going to topple, they should have notified a ranger, not tipped the thing over! Some people have so little common sense it's frightening.

These idiots need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I have heard about this beautiful place and it sickens me to see this destruction. Also, the fact that they were scout leaders with children makes this situation even worse.
