I have a series of layouts of bad selfies of DH & I through out the year so far...LOL We're getting better but I don't know if it's luck or what. There's no secret - hold the camera up & out, try to aim and hope for the best. On the last Glitter Girl video, she mentioned you tube tutorials. Maybe check that out.

I find it easier to take my selfies in front of a mirror. Turn your smartphone (or camera with a display) so that the display is facing the mirror. This way you can put the camera at your best angle and see the picture while you take it. Takes practice, but it's my go-to method.

I too an not good at taking selfies at all.
I even tried the mirror technique that loveltr does...still an epic fail.
I guess I'm just not very photogenic, lol.

you can take your picture with your laptop camera{webcam} too..all you need to do is give a pose and click a key..no cameras ,no mirrors..i found this method good for selfies

arm up above you. Never take it from below- you'll add at least 10lbs taking it that way.

and if you can make yourself laugh you won't look so stiff

Shimelle had a class a few years ago - Love your photos - or something and she had great tips in there on how to improve selfies too. I took a few during that class and they ares till my best !
Also find using the continous shoot on my iPhone will give at least one decent shot out of 20 - did that yesterday

Simple, quick tips:

Come to your eye level or a little above...maybe even so you have to kind of look up.
Move the camera to your right or left, still above you eye level.
Tilt your head a little bit. Have your eyes look up. Crack a Smile. Click.

Live. Love. Create.

If you use an iphone, you can flip the camera so that the screen shows what you are taking a picture of (not sure if other phones do this)

Also, tilt your chin up slightly and point it outwards, shoulders back...it feels awkward but your neck and chin will look better in the photo (no double chins!)

I personally think "selfies" are for the younger crowd and think it looks not so good when someone over 35 tries to do one.

Just say no to the selfie!

ETA: I'm 42 and have never done a selfie for reasons stated above.

Taking a close up picture can make your face look distorted so it might help to switch your camera to the macro setting. Usually a flower represents that setting.
As others mentioned, taking the picture from a higher angle helps.
I don't think age has anything to do with taking selfies. As long as you're not doing duck lips.

Strike that. No one should be doing duck lips.

If all else fails, try the self-timer on your camera.

It's not for me either... and I am 45. I think the only one I have close to it, I took years ago, playing around with my camera and settings while waiting for my DH, as I was meeting him at work for lunch. (my profile pic)

I guess I'm just not very photogenic, lol.

Pretty much every photo I have of me is a selfie. If I didn't have the selfies then there would be no pictures of me at all. Being that I am 43 I sure hope that I look at least kind of okay in them and not too ridiculous.

Now if only I could learn how to do those duck lips.....

I use Camera+ and the self timer and I usually end up getting a good one! If I didn't take selfies - I'd probably never have a pic of myself. No one else in my family can use my regular camera right and they take horrible iPhone pics.

Wish I was back at 42!! Actually getting closer to 51...yikes! I prefer to be behind the camera just because I am not photogenic. But what the heck, once in a while.....!

I think selfies have their place for people over thirty! If I didn't take a selfie once in a while I would rarely appear in my scrapbook! Just take a million, Wilna...one is bound to be decent, right!! I find that I am learning what angle I look best much better than the people who try to take my photo. I take a more flattering photo myself!

I know on my iPhone if I take a short video then I can take a screen cap off of that. It gives me a lot more chances of getting one I like.

As someone over 35 I take offence to this As others have said, if I didn't take selfies I wouldn't have photos of myself. I take a lot of them when I'm on holidays and most of the photos on my last trip that are of me by myself or with my partner were taken as selfies.

The top photo on this layout is a selfie: selfie taken at Disney

Can I join the selfie party? I'm in need of a new "headshot' blah!

Then I always feel so pathetic when I delete like 50 to get ONE good one.

I use the Quickpod (sold on Amazon.com or Quickpod.com ). Gee, maybe Two Peas should sell them here. When hubby and I want a photo together with some nice scenic place in the background, this comes in so handy.

I also use the timer on the camera.

I'm 45 and if I didn't take a couple selfies on my last vacation there would've been exactly 2 photos of me. I made my DH take those by complaining that no one would even know I was on this vacation with him. He is not exactly cooperative. There is 1 photo of us together on this trip.

Best selfies I have gotten are with my iPhone camera turned towards me (so I can frame the shot). I hold it with my left hand a bit to the side and lens about level with my eyebrow. Looking up at the camera is more flattering IMO . Try to relax and smile. You will probably have to take a whole bunch to get 1 or more good ones. Just delete the bad ones.

If you must do a selfie and you're over 35, please, no duck lips!

Thank goodness I have my husband to take photos of me, otherwise I too would never show up in my albums.

(fyi - my 24 yr old niece told me about the 'no selfie over 35 rule', but then she specified that my brother (her dad who's 52) should not take selfies because he looks goofier than normal)

I'm glad nobody go offended by my comment and took it with the amount of cheek that was intended!

Selfie away ladies!

A little off topic, but I was happy to see that others of you share the dilemma of not being in pictures if you didn't take a selfie or ask someone to take a pic for you. When I vacation with my husband this is the case with me too and sometimes I get my feelings hurt.... Now I don't feel so alone and won't take it so personal.

Hahahahaha!!! This is so true and so funny. I think however that duck lips are an unfortunate by product of biological photoshopping...aka plastic surgery.

As to the people on vacations...I just offer to take other people's pictures and they'll take ours. It pays to be nice. When my hubbie and I went to Hawaii (celebrating 40 years of marriage!), we had someone take at least one picture of us each day... For my PL album. Out of 11 days, I think I missed one!
