The starter in my car is bad. I'm missing work today because it wouldn't start. I'm asking for prayers that God will provide a way to get my car fixed.

Also, I'm feeling so discouraged right now. The last 2 years have been such a struggle. Satan is using this opportunity to attack me. Even though I'm crying right now I'm trying to fight. I KNOW everything will work out, but it's hard to see it in this moment. I keep saying that His strength works best in my weakness. Well, I'm weak so... in that way it's exciting to imagine what He's going to do. It's gonna be good, what ever it is. Hopefully I wont have to wait too long.

Also, do you know for sure that it is the starter that is bad?

Could it be something simpler? Dead battery? Or battery corrosion? Bad fuses?

eta: what is stopping you from getting your car fixed? Is it a financial reason? Or you have no one that is handy that can fix your car for you as a favor? Can you not get your car to an auto place to have it fixed?

Narrowing down the problem makes it easier for us all (the collective pea) to help brainstorm a solution.

Prayers for you. Times like this are when I like to take out my Bible and just open it and read. Now you could go on biblegateway.com and search by keyword for something inspirational. There is a quote from a book that says something like the prayer that is always answered: Thy will be done. It's often helpful to me to remember that.

The car has had trouble starting for about a month. While fighting with it in the parking lot on Thursday a guy came over saying said he was a mechanic. He listened and said it's the bendix. After numerous times turning the key it finally started. I did that yesterday & was able to get to and from work. I tried for over 10 minutes today until it begun making a different noise. So now I'm missing work. Hopefully God will start it once more to get it to a mechanic. My reasons are financial. I lost my job after my brother died. Since then, the only job I've been able to find gives me 20 hours a week, minimum wage. That income covers the basics. I don't have a phone right now so I can't call around for price quotes. Until next pay (Nov 13th) I'm in limbo. Even then, I don't know if I'll be able to cover all of it. I may have to buy the part one check & cover the labor cost with the next. I really need God to help me out with this one. I'm stuck, but He's not!

Do you go to church? Can you email anyone there for help getting your car to a mechanic, or even for the financial help?

Do you have an emergency credit card to use?

Do you have a computer microphone? You could download Skype to use for phone service. It is very cheap to call with.

I'm a member of Jimmy Swaggart's media church. I also listen to Joyce Meyer & Joseph Prince. There are local churches (obviously) but I'm not a member of them. No credit cards or computer microphone. Good ideas though. Thank you.

I've considered a loan using the car as collateral, but it doesn't seem wise to do so.

Don't use your home or car as collateral.

I would consider applying for a credit card as an emergency means of funds, though it won't help you in this instance.

I would also consider buying a cheap computer microphone, and to download Skype. I'm pretty sure you can buy Skype credits in ten dollar increments and that will last a long time.

I would consider going to a local church and asking them for help anyway. What is the very worst that they can say? No? And then you won't be any worse off than you already are.

Computer microphone headsets on Amazon for use with Skype

I linked Amazon, but you can google "computer microphone headset" and find it elsewhere too.

Also, go to a church and ask to use their phone to call for estimates on the work for your car. Have a list of at least three mechanics to call. Ask them if they take a payment plan (I don't know if car mechanics do that, but other services, like dentists, do... so it's worth a shot).

Also, when going to the church to ask for help, ask them if any of their members is or knows a mechanic and would be willing to trade to fix your car (the labor cost - you still might have to pay for parts) for something that you could offer. What are you good at? Can you clean someone's house? Cook well? Babysit? Dogsit? Feed pets while someone is away?

Keep hold of your faith. There is always a way around problems, we just have to think them through.

It is imperative t get your car working again to enable you to get to work.

Oh - do you have any coworkers who would give you a lift to work? You could pay gas money.

@LolaLayout: You've been super helpful. I really appreciate it! I have a church close to my house I could walk to. I never considered asking to use their phone... that's genius! I'd definitely trade to get my car fixed. I'm not above cleaning a toilet or something; whatever I need to do (morals intact!). Skype is an idea too. I've heard of it, but didn't know too much about it. I asked my work if someone would get me today, but they just said not to worry about it (easy for them to say). My next work day is Thursday. I think I'll be able to get a ride if I don't have my car by then.

Faith... that's the only thing keeping me going. Yay God

Glad to see you are keeping positive, Harmony.
Staying positive is what I always try to do. Unfortunately, sometimes I have a melt down, but I'm usually able to pull myself out of it pretty quick. Satan has stolen too much of my joy already so I'm determined to give him as little as possible now.

I'm glad to hear that you think you will be able to get a ride on Thursday. I'll keep you in my thoughts.
Thanks!

No bus in my area. I do remember someone mentioning a van now I'm thinking about it... it may only be transportation to medical appointments though. Hmm. Gonna have to check that option out!

"That sounds like works of the flesh."

And what exactly did that person mean by that?

Because surely they don't mean what my mind immediately thought they mean.

Surely they don't mean something immoral.

How did that person offer to help you?

Or is that a person who only offers criticism and brings you down? A friend does not leave you feeling defeated.

It's someone I should be able to count on, but....

I want to preface by saying I'm open-minded enough to admit that I'm not 100% right nor is she 100% wrong.

Works of the flesh; no, not immoral. It's a Biblical principal; don't depend on what we (the flesh) can do, but what He can do. I get that, respect it, & believe it. However, I don't believe that once you pray you do nothing. God gave us a mind; I believe He expects us to use it. Yes, be guided by the Holy Spirit. Yes, ask for wisdom & that He bless your actions. But don't do nothing! One can't expect a garden to grow just by planting seeds....

In her mind, I'm to pray and just wait. Anything I do will be negating what He can do because I'm depending on self not Him. I don't see it that way. I see it as taking a step of faith. I know (and He knows I know) that whatever I do will only be successful because He is with me. I can't magically make the car work, but I can depend on Him to guide me the right person, place, or thing that can get it fixed. If I was going around saying I need to rob a bank, or I need to sell everything else of value, or basically go bankrupt in loans in order to get the money because I'm the only one that can make this happen than yes I'm depending on self. That's not my mindset, nor my motivation, nor what's in my heart. Making arrangements to get a ride to work isn't telling God I don't think He's not going to provide away to get my car fixed... to me, it's saying, "I know Your time isn't my time." Perhaps, He wants to use that person to be a blessing to me! Maybe it will bring them some joy they need or teach me a lesson in humility. I don't know, I'm not God. I just know God doesn't intend for me to be irresponsible & use Him/prayer as my excuse.

Oh, okay. *phew* Well, at least it wasn't as bad as I thought it sounded.

Still, I think you are correct in your thinking.

It reminds me of something I read once....

A man survives his house being washed away by a massive storm, and is left clinging to a tree.

He looks up to the sky and says, "God, please help me. Save me."

A small raft approaches the tree, the man aboard it offering his hand. "Get on my raft with me and we'll make it to safety."

The man on the tree shakes his head, "No thank you." And the man on the raft continues to drift by.

Fifteen minutes pass and the man on the tree looks up to the sky again. "Please, God, Save me!"

Two men in a canoe pull up alongside the tree. "Hop in! There's room for one more!"

Again the man on the tree shakes his head and watches as the canoe drifts away.

After an hour passes, and now angry, the man in the tree looks up to the sky and yells, "How can you forget about me, God?! How can you call yourself all powerful and not help me?!"

Minutes later, a man in a motorboat steers his craft near to the tree. "Hurry, and get into the boat! The worst of the storm is coming!"

The man in the tree clings tight to his branch, his body cold and shaking. "God will save me!"

And the motorboat races away.

The storm soon comes down full force, ripping the man from the tree with its soaking rain and gale force winds. The man drowns, still crying out for God to help him.

The man opens his eyes to a sight more beautiful than all he'd ever seen. And before him is God himself.

"God, how could you let me die?" he asks. "I have always tried to honor you."

God smiles comfortingly. "I sent you a raft, a canoe, and a motorboat. I did not want you to die."

Harmony, I think I have one of those headsets to use for Skype. I have something that came with a previous computer and a speech-to-text program that I never even opened. If you would like, I can look for it tomorrow and if I can find it, I would be happy to mail it to you.

It may not get there in time to help with this instance, but it would be good to have for emergencies until you can get a phone. I'll check this post tomorrow morning to see if you want me to look for it.

Glad to hear you have a ride there.

The person won't/can't drive you home?

Now's the time to start brainstorming about getting home, and getting to work Friday and Saturday. I wish you the best. Hopefully being at work, and possibly in the vicinity of more businesses (like an auto shop or suto supply place) will open up opportunities to 1.)Get a ride back home from work, and to & from work on the other days; and 2.)Maybe you can talk to someone about getting your car fixed.

It never hurts to ask for help. So many people want to help others, but never know when to step in to do so. Give them an opportunity and they might surprise you.
