Just popped in to the grocery store for butter (baking day today!) and the cashier happened to be a gal I used to work with and haven't seen in ages.

We had a friendly chat while she rang up my stuff, I paid and was finishing packing my things as we chatted. Nothing serious, just fluff about what ages are kids our now, and she asked how my biz was going.

I guess the senior behind me wanted it to be her turn, as she pushed her cart along and into my thigh (not hard, I don't think it will even bruise and I bruise very easily).

So I kindly said "Thanks XXX" to the cashier and went on my merry way.

Next time I'll not be so friendly with the cashier! LOL

I've been hit by carts, too.

I wasn't moving forward one time, because I was waiting to use my debit card, and the woman behind me kept bumping her cart into me.

I guess she was chomping at the bit to move that cart up 3 inches.

DH (who is disabled) was in line at the exit door of Sam's once and a lady behind him hit him so hard with her cart, he actually went down. Hard.

She didn't even acknowledge him or what she'd done. Just went around him in her mad rush to get out the door.

No way, people actually push other people with carts!? It's actually a thing that's happened to more than one pea!?

I'm a really level-headed, slow-to-anger kind of gal, but I think I'd be giving a huge piece of my mind to someone if they did this to me!

My kids still talk about the time that happened to me in the grocery store, just as I'd turned around and the bottom lip of the cart hit my bad knee. I grabbed onto the cart -- because honestly, I had to steady myself or I would have fallen over. After a few choice blue words entered the air, I looked at the bitch and said, "You want to start a shoving game with the cart? Go ahead. My knee now hurts like a mofo and I'm in a reallllly bad mood. Or do you want to back off? And while you're at it, why don't you give me your name and number so I can see you in court for the insurance claim on my knee?" She chose to leave the store in a rush.

The cashier told me that this woman does that to EVERY customer ahead of her in a line every time she comes in. I went up and had a word with the manager about it.

I got shoved with a cart just yesterday! I was picking up a few groceries (all that posting about chicken soup made me crave it, so I ran out to buy the stuff to make some) and since the store was fairly busy and there was no bagging person helping her, I stepped to the end of the checkout to bag my stuff and put it in my cart after I got it all on the conveyer belt.

The second I moved my cart to the end and started bagging, the old lady behind me pushed her cart so far forward, she was beyond the cashier and in front of the debit card machine. Her cart was now at the end of the cash stand, between the two of us. To get to the machine to pay, she needed to back up about six feet so I could get in front of the machine to put my card in. It would have appeared as if we were together, she was that close.

After the checker was finished and it was my turn to put my card in, I turned to her and said, "oh, thank you! Can I assume you are buying my groceries since you are blocking me from the pay machine?"

She gave me a dirty look and just kind of "harumphed" at me. I didn't move, because I couldn't get in. I suppose I could have moved her cart out and stepped in far enough, but I was irritated. I forced her to back up, which meant the the people/carts behind her had to back up.

I paid and was putting my card back in my wallet before stepping away from the machine. She pushed me with her cart a bit to make me move away! So I purposely dropped my card so that she would have to back up again to allow me the room to pick it up. I smiled at her and said, "Thank you for your patience, ma'am" and I left. The cashier was trying not to laugh.

I don't know what the big damn rush is to gain the extra space ahead in a line like that. She can't go until the cashier finished with me, and I was actually making the line faster by bagging my own groceries instead of having the checker do it at the end of ringing me up. And I'm usually super nice to older people doing their shopping. I usually chat with them and try to make a small friendly connection. This lady was a mean grump who didn't see anything wrong with pushing people with her cart. There is no excuse for that.

And Bumpea, I can't believe that woman knocked your husband down and didn't help him back up while appologizing fifty times for doing it! Maybe people are shopping for groceries when they are hungry and therefore crabby?

It's definitely since the beginning of the swipe your own card era that this has been happening to me.

I think folks who don't use debit/credit cards to pay don't realize that you need to stay in that spot until the transaction is over, OR, that you at least need to return to that spot.

I love Target because they put theirs right at the very end of the check-out lane, so you can stand at the end and wait and not be in anyone's way.

And yes, I truly have no idea why the entire country seems to be in such a freaking hurry anymore.

Moving that cart up earlier will not get you out of the store earlier, people.

You all have to stop with the ageist comments. Every single time I'm in line, someone is up my grill with their cart: young, old, female, male. So, it is definitely not a matter of age. Just plain entitlement, impatience or inattention.

Be on the other end of your grocery cart. Keep it between you and the next customer, always. For one thing, it's easier to put your bags into the cart from the low end, and another, it keeps the next customer from crowding you. I've had them push into my cart, trying to move it forward and I just push it back to keep space between us. People who crowd too close to someone using the debit machine are super annoying.

I often chat with the cashier while she is ringing my groceries and I'm putting them into my cart. A friendly grocery cashier makes one's day more pleasant.

ETA: 'Fraid I don't agree with Patti Purple Packrat. The impatient people I encounter at a grocery cash register are always my age or older.

I'm with 'Georgia' on "be in front of the cart"--at least when I'm doing grocceries. I pull (not push) into the checkout 'cause it's the easiest way for me to unload it.

And even when the transaction is finished, it can take several momnents for the registar to print out the receipt & free coupons & such--regardless of how I'm paying.

Long as the clerk & customer aren't 'just' conversing, I'm ok.

Someone pushes their cart into me diliberately? They do that at their own risk!

I have never had anyone push their cart into me on purpose, ever ever. I would completely lose it if someone tried it. I can't believe how many of you just smiled and told them thanks for their patience! How passive-aggressive.

Maybe I shop in happier places because anytime anyone has come close with a cart there are always profuse apologies offered. Even at WalMart, no one has ever hit me with their cart to try and make me move faster. I have been hit by plenty of big asses there, though.

You know what I hate...when someone reaches right in front of or across you to get something without saying "excuse me". It's like some people were raised by wolves.

I have a kid in the seat end of the cart, so i don't like leaving him unsupervised to stand at the low end of the cart.

But otherwise I'd totally go for that idea.

It's ridiculous that someone would do that.

I do want to say that while I would never hit someone with a cart I have asked someone to have their social hour on their own time not on mine when they were chatting with the cashier. It annoys me when the cashier is catching up with a friend while I'm waiting. Even if they are working while they talk they are going way slower then they would if they weren't socializing. I have things to do and if I stand around talking to my friends at work I'd get written up your there to work not chat.

I do my best to ignore stuff and just assume that someone else's life is so bad that they've gotten be a jerk right now.

But if you hit me with your cart in line? You'll get it shoved right back. I can't stand that and have a very, very difficult time not retaliating with a hard shove myself.

I admit to losing my temper a bit one day at WM when, yes, an old lady tried to scoot me through the unloading of my cart on the belt.
I had a horrible migraine and she kept inching closer and closer.
I turned to her and looked her in the eye and said, "You better not hit me with that cart or there is going to be a scene. You inching closer and closer to me does not make any more room on this belt for my groceries."
I got the "harumph" too, but she backed the hell off and kept her head turned sideways for the rest of the experience.
I probably would have shoved that cart up her ass if she had hit me.
Nobody wants to linger in line at WM any longer than necessary.I also don't enjoy when the cashier is 'catching up' with an old friend either as they tend to slow way down. As someone else said, I didn't get paid to socialize on my job and neither do they.

I didn't have a cart. All I grabbed was two pounds of butter & a small pork roast that was on sale, so no cart needed.

I usually unload before pushing the cart through - and I usually push because my purse is in the child seat area!

My favourite phrase is 'Excuse YOU' when some idiot acts like an idiot. They tend to get the message without me having to go off on a long tirade and also doesn't tend to get an aggressive response back!

I'd have no problem explaining to someone why I had said that, but haven't had top so far and, once in a blue moon, someone is aware enough to actually apologise!

I was an adult before I came to realize that ignoring others is not as easy for some people as it is for me.

As a kid I thought everyone could ignore others with equal ease and I could never understand when I'd say "Just ignore them" to a friend and they'd look at me like I was nuts.

Now mind you, just because I can ignore people doesn't mean I always choose to do so.

I live in an area full of winter friends (snowbirds) and I can't think of a single time I have ever been hit with a cart. I have inchers and creepers all the time-no age limit on those folks, but with those folks I always get a bit (okay, more than a bit) passive aggressive and go even slower while putting my groceries on the conveyor belt.

I'm a kill them kindness kind of girl which either wins them over or irritates them more. I don't really care which. If your cart is threatening to touch my ass (I'm pretty short) I am not going to be all excited thinking that I am being felt up by Gerard Butler.

I will sometimes offer to let the creeper pay for my groceries. That backs them off real quick. I am feeding teenage boys and my groceries load isn't for sissies.

I was in line in Walmart, and the man behind me started unloading my cart, saying I looked like I needed help! I was so startled by it, I was speechless, but I did not want someone else touching my stuff.

I have been bumped in the grocery store before and always turned to see someone very apologetic for accidentally bumping me. I've done the same before and been very sorry and apologized profusely.

If someone did hit me with a cart on purpose, I would probably just go all sorts of crazy ...

Unless I though the person that hit me was crazier than ME. Then, I'm not sure what I would do. I'm not about to go looking for trouble in a world where people are really nutso and you just never know what things could escalate too...

I can turn the other cheek and walk away.
