Lets talk about this for a moment!
In one sentence, why do you scrapbook? I know it can be all of these listed below... But if you had to pick ONE:

To collect supplies?
To preserve your memories?
To teach wisom to your kids?
To record the day by day?
To just be creative?

What did i miss? Please take a moment and write something here. This is an important question being asked right now in this industry.

heart and soul,

Mostly to be creative. Without children to pass albums to, it's just about creating for me. I enjoy the process and the finished product.

I do it because I know so little about my own family history. Both sides came to the country just two generations ago under fairly mysterious circumstances and no one ever talked about the "old countries." It is important to me that our daughter knows who she is and where she came from and can pass that knowledge on to her own children....should she chose to have them.

Be creative. To tell stories through art.

I just don't see why people think I'm too patronizing (that means I treat them as if they were stupid.)

Primarily to de-stress.

ETA: I have been reading all the responses. Interesting! I realised I should add one that I don't think has come up- Scrapbooking is my only "girly" activity. I work with men, I am not a good homemaker, never wanted kids, Hubby does all the cooking...

I started scrapbooking so I had somewhere to put my photos other than a shoebox.

Now, I scrap to tell stories. Though I still love that my photos aren't ending up in a (virtual) shoebox.

At first it was to be creative and now it's to preserve memories.

I keep at it because when I look back at when my kids were younger and read what I wrote 4,5,6 years ago, I'm surprised how much I don't remember. It's one thing having a picture, it's another sharing a story and I'm so happy to have found this hobby.

If I could only pick one, it would be to preserve my memories.

But I do enjoy the supply shopping and creative process to go along with it!

I do it mainly for a creative outlet. I've always felt the need to make things. I found with other hobbies I ended up with too many with many items I couldn't use. Scrapbooking is also very cheap compared to some hobbies. I CAN spend hundreds but I can also find tons of fun stuff for $5 or less everyday of the week.

I scrapbook both to leave a clear record for my son of how deeply loved he is, as well as to give myself a reminder, by focusing on photos of the people I love and the everyday stuff, to appreciate my life.

My art journaling is primarily to be creative and to find an outlet for my thoughts and feelings.

Another aspect for me is that by identifying myself with these crafts and this community, I can self identify as a crafty person and I like that vision of myself.

1. As a creative outlet. I've done crafts my entire life. Both sides of my family had people who worked with their hands, either as a job and/or as hobbies. So I grew up with a lot of focus on using your hands to make things. My main focuse used to be needlecraft. Once I got bifocals, I found I could no longer do that -- the distance was never right. I very reluctantly had to give it up. I found scrapbooking and actually, in some ways, I enjoy it more than needlecrafting for a number of different reasons:
-I can finish a LO way faster than I could finish any needle project. So there is more gratification.
-I also like that scrapbooking allows me to use so many different types of materials in my projects, so I don't get bored with the materials and enjoy "looking" for found items to use.
-Since it's just 1 or 2 LOs, I can experiment and feel freer doing so. There's no big commitment. It's not a huge outlay of money to try something different or if I hate the result, to just throw it out.
-The "hunt" for ways to document a story, such as a moment on vacation, has led us down some interesting travel paths and conversations with people around us who ask what I'm doing when I'm taking what seems to be an odd photograph or ask if I can have a discarded ticket, etc. So the pursuit of scrapbooking has actually LED to new experiences and memories.

2. To preserve my memories of my life. So far I've really focused on special events -- vacations and wedding. I have tried to do daily or "regular" life LOs and they bore me to tears.

In one sentence? Because my life is worth documenting.

I also love the creative outlet. I love looking back and re-living the big events and the everyday. I want to leave my mark, even if it gets chucked out once I'm not around anymore, I won't know that haha!

I scrapbook to preserve my memories.

I think the focus of the scrapbook industry veered too far away from that and they alienated a lot of people who might have been interested in scrapbooking. Just my opinion

To be creative, which is why I spend more and more of my time rt journaling, and when I do make layouts and cards, I use more and more mixed media techniques and less patterned paper.

ETA: I started out with the intention to preserve memories, but have come to the realization that no-one else cares about it, so when I die, I expect those albums to end up in the trash.

I scrapbook to be creative.

Scrapbooking is definitely my creative outlet, to the point where sometimes I don't even journal about what the page is about because the story is quite secondary to me. I'm trying to get better at caring about the journaling, because I know that others might care about the journaling in the future.

To be creative and preserve my memories, my thoughts, and my emotions. I do not have kids yet so mainly my scrapbooking is about myself. When I do pages about loved ones, it's always through my eyes. How I see them, what I love about them, or my favorite memory of them. I don't like event and fact based scrapbooking, I think that's why I'm struggling with project life. I like to document emotions not events! Plus there is just nothing better than spending a day playing with pretty paper!

I scrapbook because I have a terrible memory. We had a HUGE January, but I don't remember much of it at all. I like looking back and remembering things that I just forget way too easily.

I make cards because I like to colour and I don't want piles of coloured images everywhere and I still get to play with paper when I've run out of things to scrap which happens too often.

My mother has a box of photos of people she can not name and I never meet her parents because they died before I was born. I don't want my daughter to not know her story or my story or her grandparents story. Equally important to me is the creative process as well. I have a degree in graphic design but I do not work in that field so the creative process of scrapbooking is important to me too.

To use my hands to make something pretty. To recognize and preserve the good things, because I only seem to remember the lousy stuff. To express my love to my husband and daughter. To get to organize a little collection of supplies that reflects my personal style. To get to create something tangible in just an evening. To sort out what I value most in life and what delights me and do more of that.

1. Remind me of my blessings. OK, well, it didn't start out that way, but that is what keeps me scrapbooking.

2. To preserve my memories. I am scrapbooking for myself 20 years in the future.

3. A creative outlet. I have a strong need to be creative, and this is a very satisfying creative outlet.

4. To have my photos organized and in a location where I don't have to "hunt" for them in some box.
