I don't care for most sushi. 16 year old sons loves it! It is kind of $$. Well, let me say if I bought it for me it wouldn't be but he eats a lot so it adds up quickly. I have been researching some local options for to go sushi for him and a couple people suggested Costco. I picked it up on Wednesday and thought he would have some later that night and again on Thursday. He didn't because of other activities and I want him to have it for dinner tonight. It was packed on the 18th, says sell by 19th and today is the 20th. That is OK to eat right? It smells....well fishy but it is suppose too! LOL I would hate to give him something and make him sick. Would you eat it or serve it to your 16 year old? TIA

I'm pretty liberal on most of the Would You Eat This threads, but past-date sushi?

No. Just no.

Also, fresh fish should NOT smell fishy.

Sushi is not supposed to smell fishy. I say when in doubt, throw it out, would you rather give him an upset stomach over $10?
I will eat a lot of things, but fish that smells fishy is a bad idea!

If the sell by date is the 19th, eating it on the 20th would be about the norm, wouldn't it. Sell by is not the same as use by. I wouldn't be able to personally eat it. Not because of dating, just that anything fishy smelling gives me shivers.

OK, well thanks! Sell by just one day ago made me think it could still be fine today. Grom pea-Of course not except on the days he is sassy.

What kind of sushi?

I wouldn't eat raw fish past the sell by date. Something like a California roll, where everything is cooked, I might feel differently.

So it is all cooked??? Then I would eat it. Although it would still concern me that it smells fishy.

I am going to jump in and pile on with the fish shouldn't smell fishy thing. I live with and am surrounded by fishermen, and fresh fish has an ocean (salt water fish anyway) smell, not a fishy smell. By the time it starts smelling fishy, it is probably on it's way to being something you don't want to eat.

If it was unopened, maybe.
Since it was open and out before, no.

It smells like sushi. It doesn't smell like rotten fish. I said that (it smells like fish) kind of tongue and cheek. Actually smells like a lot wasabi because there is a ball of it to the side.

No, and serve it to your son only if you want him to hate Sushi for the rest of his life.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to presume.

It's just that we eat so much fresh fish (often straight from the boat) that I soemtimes feel the need to make a public service announcement to tell people that fish shouldn't smell.

No possible way.

Sushi is a food you need to eat as fresh as possible As in---sitting at the sushi counter.

Bargain or cheap sushi---oh my goodness. Beware. And then run.

I would NOT eat it because sushi goes gummy (the rice) after half a day or so.

For the record, I would eat most every other thing on other would you eat it threads. In your case it would be a texture thing.

I would not eat it, not because of fear of it being bad, but because it just wouldn't taste good. Sushi needs to be eaten fresh, not two days old. There's nothing raw in a shrimp crunch roll but it will have dried out and taste nasty.
