My mom told me today that she went to pick up a gift card at Archivers for me and they said sorry, they aren't issuing them right now. And then went on to tell her that they aren't sure if they'll be open to honor them. That is really sad news to me. I have shopped there fairly regularly, although overall amongst my friends, I'm one of the few that still does. Anyone else experience this?

I was there today and heard them tell two people who came in for them the same thing. I think they might close after the first of the year

Sad - I don't have an Archivers near me, but we always try to find one if we are visiting a city that has one. I really liked that store! It always was like a gigantic scrapbook candy store!

A local LSS closed their brick and mortar store but have reopened as an online only thing - I wonder if A's might do that?

Although I don't live near an A's, I have shopped at a few in my travels. I have always enjoyed the store. It sounds as if they might be closing. I sure hope not.

At least they are being honorable and not selling GCs they have not intention of letting people use.

I can't remember what store it was around here, but they were selling GCs up to the day before they closed without warning. People were SOL. I also remember some national restaurant that refused to honor GCs after they announced plans to close in a month or so. Those customers were SOL as well.

So good on Archivers for not screwing people over.

Mallie, you are so right - I've been stuck a couple of times with GC's from stores that went out of business. One was a golf store that I bought my husband a GC from the week before they closed. Why didn't they say something? So good for Archivers that they are doing the right thing about this.
I hope they stay in business since they are the only lss that we have left here in our area. The girls at our A's are always nice too.

Someone else told me the same thing about not offering gift cards. Between that and the email asking people to shop, it doesn't sound like a good sign to me either! Sad b/c we will only have the bix box stores, and an LSS about 45 minutes from here. The A's near here closed and now the closest one is about 45 minutes away. I am hoping after Christmas I will be able to go there b/c I want to use my coupons and I also want to check out Valentine's Day stuff!

I was hoping they would be able to figure out a plan to continue hosting Scrapfest but it doesn't look good. I don't have an Archivers near me so I only go when I go to Scrapfest.

I heard the same thing at Archvier's in Raleigh today. It is so sad, no one there is saying it is closing, I don't even think they know. they are still getting some new products…Project Life, a few Valentine's items, lots of new Christmas stuff. I am so hoping they don't close, I have a few friends that scrapbook as well and that is our meeting place. There are not any other non-big box chains anywhere else around here. Crossing my fingers for them and toes. I think the Memory Lab was a good idea, it seems to be brining in business. They were having problems before then though, at least it seemed like to me.

Those of you being told that they're not selling gift cards, where is your store? I'm wondering if this is specific stores, or the whole chain.

I don't have one near me and have never been to one, but just hearing this makes me sad, too. I figured that maybe one day, they would come to my area.... Is business really that bad for the scrapbook stores?

I'm guessing it is, at least around here. We no longer have LSS and JoAnn's and Michaels have cut way back on their scrapbooking selection. Hobby Lobby still has the same amount but it's aisles consist of stickers and old single sheet paper and those big paper stacks.

I will be really upset if Archivers goes as there will be no store around here that carries current papers.

No!! I love A's!! It FELT like a small LSS because the employees were always helpful and friendly (in fact, it was FRIENDLIER than some of the lss's I had been to). I love that place and always hoped they would open a store closer to my town. The closest is 1 1/2 hours away…and I was there 2 weeks ago.

It blew my mind when they closed the one by me in October. It was in Gurnee Mills which was rated one of the top 10 busiest malls in America. That place was pretty hoppin. And they closed the one in Mall of America at the same time.

Ugh, just saw this reply on FB to someone who asked about them not selling gift cards:

Hi Melanie. Because we're in Chapter 11 and our future is uncertain, we thought the responsible thing to do was to not sell gift cards this holiday season. Thank you for understanding.

Today I got a 40% off coupon in my email and they said there is an end of season sale... end of Christmas/Holiday season? Or end of Archiver's season? I will be very sad if they close.

The no gift cards is chain wide. They were discussing it last week when I went in.
The one here in Cincinnati suggested purchasing a "mall" card that could be used at any of
the shops in the plaza area. Just so sad that they are struggling as well. I LOVE our store and would hate to see it close. We have one other LSS and they just don't stock the latest and greatest as quickly as I'd like!

I just don't understand. I've been to 3 different Archivers stores, North Olmsted (now closed), Columbus, and Mason, and every time they were very busy. I've always had to wait in line to checkout. How are they not surviving? So sad.

That really does stink but I'm happy they were honest. I used to get one every year for the store in Raleigh. I would visit in the summer and it would be a highlight of my visit. Mom would babysit and I would go shopping. So sad!

Are they still honoring their cards? I bought one for a present Thanksgiving weekend. I have a feeling I have one coming my way today as well. Guess I better make sure to use it up this weekend.

The Maple Grove MN is my store, and it is always pretty busy in there. It would stink if they close after all that $$ they dropped into the memory lab. And they just rearranged the store as well. HMM, regardless I'm going to make sure to use all my gift cert up this weekend.

To those that think the Memory lab was the downfall....... It has brought in much more than than it cost to set it up. 4 computers, 2 printers, and 2 scanners did not cost that much in relation to what goes into the place. Just because you did not use it, doens'nt mean others didn't love it. They did not "lose" any product, it was just rearranged to other places in the store. Lots of people used it, not just for pictures, but for photo gifts, calendars, etc. Again, it brought in more money than it sure cost.

What is really sad is it seems like they may be moving towards all stores closing, rather than just some of them? Hard to say, I hope they can make it. It is pretty obvious to me that they are in some high rent areas and have a lot of inventory, that may be the bigger problem, rather than the drop in the industry overall. I haven't had much time to shop there this month, but I'm looking forward to getting in there after Christmas!

Also, I agree with previous posters and respect the fact that they aren't selling gift cards with their future unknown. I have a lot of respect for how they have run their business, I don't recall ever having a customer service problem with them.

This makes me sad. I love Archiver's. I was not able to get in there last weekend when they were offering 30% off your purchase, as I was there the weekend before getting all my photo gifts and stuff completed, including cards and tags (I bought some kits, they always have the cutest kits).

I have an LSS but I don't go often because their style is different from mine. They don't do Project Life and I do a lot of that. That's why I liked As, they embraced the changes.

Denji, you always come in swinging. Argumentative or defensive, on the Archiver's threads. It's very off-putting. Obviously you work in one or something? Have any information to share (besides arguing points pp expressed)?

If I recall correctly, the memory labs came in after the bankruptcy. I had heard it was an attempt by the owners to get back to their roots, which had been photo processing. I wish they had the memory labs from the get go! I haven't honestly been impressed with the print quality over what I get elsewhere, but really do like the photo gift possibilities, especially combined with make and take type projects like they did this fall. My store has finally gotten a manager with excellent customer service skills, but staff is still poorly trained, IMO.

I myself havent used the photo lab nor have a desire to. The closest A is 1hour 30 minutes away. So the photo lab might work for some but I have no desire to sit around a wait for photos etc. Yes, I go to other places when there but dont have a desire to backtrack to pick up photos.

So for those not close by an A's? is this really worth the space/time? I have never used one so have no idea of the time etc it takes.

I love A's cozy feel, their wide selection of product. But I've never been fond of the fact they price above suggested manufacturer's retail, and then give you a small discount with a coupon for one item. It still doesn't line up pricewise with what everyone else charges.

That said, I have shopped there because it's such a nice, well laid out, friendly place. But this month? Nope. Ours is located in one of those strip malls where they engineered traffic flow very poorly, and we avoid that intersection like the plague during Christmas.

Ketsmom,
There is a store on Beechmont Avenue in the Cherry Grove shopping center….Scraps Etc.
It's under new management and is just not what it used to be. They don't restock on a regular basis. Their main manager is super sweet and will bend over backwards to help you, but she's limited in what she can do. I have heard "rumors" that they may be closing due to the lack of new inventory.
