We reuse the same stockings each year, my (now ex) mother in law does amazing cross stitch items and she made a stocking for each of the boys when they were born, and one for me. (She is amazing, she did mine after I was divorced from her son.)

My mom still hangs my childhood stocking at her house.

In talking to people and reading here, I sometimes see that people buy new stockings each year.

I am sitting here drinking coffee and contemplating when to begin the "big wrap-a-thon" and started thinking about Christmas traditions and was curious what everyone else does.

We reuse. I made all of ours except ds's. I think I will make one for him for next year since he's sentimental and would appreciate a handmade stocking.

My Mum made 2 little ones for my kid when they were small so we re-use those. I think their main bigger ones are nothing special, as in store bought, but they have had the same ones for years just because

Today, I will be colouring outside the lines.

We reuse, too. My in laws gave us the cutest stockings for our first Christmas together. The kids took them over a few years ago (they're super cute!)

Stockings get stored in the box with the tree skirt and other decorations.

We reuse the Easter baskets, too.

We have the needlepoint ones personalized with each person's name. I bought the first ones when my two oldest were born. And they've been easy enough to add to every year as the family grew and changed.

I do still have a knitted one with my name from my childhood that I keep with packed up Christmas stuff.

My grandmother (memere) knits a stocking for everyone in the (extended) family. I actually have two, as my mom wouldn't let me take mine when I moved out.

She even made them for my bff/roommate and her daughter (whom I refer to as my niece.)

I just don't see why people think I'm too patronizing (that means I treat them as if they were stupid.)

My mother did stockings for my siblings and I when we were all born, then one for dh after we were married, then the same for each child when they were born, so we use those every year, simply because they were made for each of us, with our names on them.

I think dh's family bought different ones each year but that was because they weren't anything special.

We have bought a couple of more stockings here and there but they are ones that are meant to keep, like knitted ones etc, so occasionally the girls want to change it up for a year and use one of those, but for the most part, we use the ones given to us.

Reuse. When I had ds, I found some red satiny ones at Michaels. I bought those and some beaded/sequined applique type things. I put them together. DH had the forethought to tell me to go back and get a 4th stocking and details for when we have a 2nd child. So that is what we use.

I had one growing up that was made from red felt. I believe my grandmother made it for me. I know that all of us (my mom's siblings and grandkids) had one. I used that for 20 or so years. Then one year my aunt made my mom, sister, and myself new ones. I used that one until I made the ones above.

My plan is for my kids to continue using these as long as they last.

We reuse the same stockings every year. I've never heard of buying new stockings every year. Seems silly to me.

Ours aren't special though, just bought at the store kind. I am NOT crafty.

Reuse. My mother has made cross stitched stockings for her 5 kids and their spouses, their children and their spouses, and their children, etc.
she's made them for everyone all the way down through her 8 great grandchildren. She also made one for my dog

People buy new stockings every year? Aside from the lack of tradition that seems an incredible waste. Do they buy the really cheap ones every year and then throw them out?

My grandmother made all of us stockings when we were born. They are red velvet with hand cut and embellished things on them. There is a tree, a reindeer, an ornament, etc. And our names are on them, hand cut from white felt. She hand stitched sequins on them and put small silver jingle bells on the bottom. I absolutely love them!

When my sister got married, she made one for her DH. Then when the other cousins started getting married, she made them for their spouses. When great grandchildren started arriving, she made them stockings as well. I have only been married for 4 years, and her hands were so arthritic that she had a hard time with the small needle work that went into the stockings. She passed away last year 5 days before Christmas, and never was able to make my DH a stocking. I was so very sad that he would be the only spouse without a stocking.

Imagine my surprise last January when I received a surprise package in the mail. My auntie made my DH a stocking! I SOBBED when I opened the box. Our stockings now hang in the living room, and I just love looking at them. It looks identical to mine. I just love it!

Needless to say, we use the same stockings every year. But I also really like stockings, so I have 2 other sets of stockings that hang in other places around the house. The red velvet ones are our "official" stockings.

Happy now?

We definitely reuse.

Each child had a "first Christmas" stocking, which was not re-used, but I kept them. But after that they used the same one each year.

2 years ago I did buy new ones for everyone because it was DS's first year to need a full size stocking and because DH's stocking had started to fall apart. Prior to that DH & I had used the same ones for about a decade.

I must have missed the threads about yearly stockings, because until right now I had never heard of anyone buying new stockings each year.

We reuse Easter baskets, too. Each of the girls has a nice Longaberger Easter basket.

We reuse, but I'm thinking about getting new ones. Our current ones aren't handmade and don't match. My mom bought one for DD when she was a baby, but it's definitely not my taste and I would like to get rid of it. DS's stocking is just a random one that I got somewhere. DH's and my stockings do match each other, but I'm a little tired of them. Then....there's the dog's and the cat's stockings.

I would love some that are personalized.

We re-used. I made those stitched felt stockings (although for many years I used my childhood stocking that my mother gave me).

For some reason, my kids never got into the stocking tradition, so we stopped it a few years back. I saved the stockings and intend upon giving them to the kids once they're all grown up and living on their own.

Re-use but we have several and each year the kids get to choose which one they want to hang up. It's a mismatched collection and confuses Santa!

We had some nice needlepoint stockings I had bought when the kids were little. Then the cat did something she should not have done, and when we washed them, they shrunk. Last year, bought cheap Wal Mart ones. Found nice stockings on clearance yesterday at Penney's, so we start over again!

The stockings at my parents house are the family heirlooms, the ones my husband and I use at our house are just ones I randomly bought at Hobby Lobby a few years ago. I can see myself replacing those with more traditional cross-stitched stockings in the future.

I bought some really cute matching handmade ones at a boutique. Then I had another baby. I was able to track down the lady that made them and get one more though the color of the fabric doesn't exactly match. Then we had a surprise I gave up my stocking to her, luckily I had never made it to the point of having name embroidered. I did do the embroidering last year, but I couldn't find the stocking lady so I had to settle for a gingerbread man stocking my mom had bought me years ago for myself. At least they are all gingerbread boy or girl themed!

I reuse because my mom makes a needlepoint one for everyone in the family. I do have a bunch of others though, I bought one for my dog, and my mom made me 3 fabric ones for my first Christmas in my condo, and my sister gave a knitted one to my dog, so i could theoretically have stockings for 8 if 3 of them were dog ones. Also when I was a kid we had snoopy stockings before my mom got into making stockings, so I might even have that one too!

My grandma knitted beautiful, custom stockings for me and my brother and sister.

When my DD was born, I asked my dad for my stocking. I removed my name and stitched hers on.

When my son was born, I asked my brother if I could have his stocking, but when my dad retrieved the box from the attic, he found that the stockings had been chewed up by some rodent.

So, I went to a yarn store with the stocking, and found a lady who would knit me another one. Man, that sucker was expensive!

We reuse, unless we have a baby. Then we have to buy new ones because we want them all to match. Last year we ordered these lovely cable knit stockings from Pottery Barn. I just loved them. Then we had our son at the beginning of this year. In October we went to order a matching stocking, and they were discontinued. So bummed. After searching for almost 2 months, we finally found some we agreed on, and that didn't look terrible and ordered them. They're nice, but I will be keeping my eyes open for some that I like more in upcoming years.

We have kept the older ones for our kids to take with them when they move out some day.

We reuse but only for a few years … I buy new ones when I buy new Christmas decor. Despite having two very crafty grandmothers, my kids never had "heirloom" style stockings. If they did, we'd use them every year, but I don't feel any loyalty to a Hobby Lobby stocking. LOL

We reuse! LOVE hanging our stockings every year! We got DH, DS1 and my stocking in 1999 - the year DS was born. He was a 5lb premie born in November, so he actaully fit into his stocking! We took pics of him in it and that was our Christmas card that year! When our twins were born in 2002 I went back to get two more matching stockings and they didn't have any. I searched and searched and finally found two that nearly match at another store. Here's a photo of ours (cropped off our Christmas card a few years ago).

The first year my DH and I were together, we picked out stockings. His is a Fisherman Santa. Mine is a elf boot with sequins and bells.

My mom crocheted my little girl's stocking last year.

My signatures are turned off,
so I have nothing cute to say.

I just found our '99 card in my Photobucket account - I probably shared it here before! DS was actually in my stocking. I think I had our names embroidered on them after our first year. His name was photoshopped on in the card! Hard to believe my fourteen year old was ever this tiny! His feet are now a size 11.5 - his foot is almost the size of the stocking!
