I think I'm really digging the look of a 12x12 layout next to a 12x12 pocket page.

I like pocket page (PL) scrapbooking but I'll admit, sometimes it can bore me a little. I've recently noticed several designers doing a 12x12 layout on one side and a pocket page on the other. I'm digging it! I was thinking I could do that and rotate which side the layout goes on. This trend really mixes traditional scrapping and pocket pages well and gives you the best of both worlds. Here are some examples:

Nancy Damiano...

Allison Davis...

Kelly Goree...

Have you noticed this? Have you done it? If you know of anyone else doing this, I'd love a link to check them out!

I'm doing a travel album for my hubby with pocket pages and I'm totally going to do this just to mix up the album and make it more interesting!

I love this and feel like its a huge breakthrough for me. I love scrapbooking but couldn't figure out what to do with the other photos that I wanted in albums. I don't want multiple albums about the same trip or time period. I'm doing this for a family trip we took last year and although I have lots of unfinished pages, already love it. Shimelle and Noell Hyman also do this.

I really like it too, in fact that's what I'm working on at the moment.

But, I always seem to prefer the 12x12 LO on the left, with the pocket page on the right. (And all the examples you showed have that, too.) But then you have the back side of the pocket page to use, too. It's so not a big deal, I know, and I just need to get over it.

This is what I was thinking of doing with my 2011 PL album that I started but never finished. That was the year I stopped scrapping (but still took pics) and just now got the itch to dive back in. I think this will be a good compromise, since I do miss full 12x12 pages, but also like the ability to just slip in pictures.

I just today finished the very last page of a trip album which ended up being 2 albums (so many pics). I used several sizes/configurations of pocket pages mixed in with my reg 12x12 pages for this project - first time I've ever tried doing this and I love how it turned out. I embellished on pics or cards in pockets to keep it flowing with the regular 12x12 pages... I had 11 pocket pages of various sizes placed where needed in the 2 albums. I can see this as my new style for many albums to come.

I've been mixing them for about 2 years and I am LOVING IT!!! Makes Scrapping so much easier for me when I don't have to turn every event into a 12x12 layout. I can do a one or two page 12x12 when it feels right and then add lots of other pix to a pocket page. It has made me super fast and I love the different challenges.

I am thinking of doing this for my vacation albums. I take so many photos that I really want in my albums, but I'm also finding myself more and more drawn to making single rather than double layouts. This is the perfect solution.

I love it. I've been thinking about doing that for all the photos that go with the LO but didn't make on the LO.

That's where I'm going. I'll be honest... Project Life and the whole pocket concept did not initially appeal to me. Now that I am seeing the possibilities, I love it. I take a LOT of pictures and I hate not using some of them. This way they can still get in the album.

This is how I enjoy doing it too. I've only done a few, but I find it helpful when I have a bunch of photos from an event and don't want to make a load of 12x12 layouts.

I embellish inside AND outside of the pockets.

I have been doing this style for a couple of years now and love it,especially for trips or big events.

My spin on it it to do an introduction layout on one side of the 12x12,and then on the flip side I do a layout for a specific place, etc. Then I start filling up the 12x12 pocket page.

Happy scrapping,

I would love to do this!! What albums do you like for this concept?
I noticed in the picture that some of the pages look to be in a 3 ring binder album, while others appear to be a hinge type album page. I have used Creative Memories albums for a long time, but am ready to switch to what I am seeing in this post. I am behind on the scrapbooking circuit...slowly getting back into it and love all the new stuff...would love to hear your ideas for albums. Thanks for any guidance!

I've actually been doing this for years! Any of you remember the 12x12" PC' Qwik-itz pocket system that Micheals carried years ago? They had a tremendous variety of pocket configurations (many of which had various sized pockets on the one page) and also pre-made insert kits. I passed on the inserts but purchased tons & tons of the protectors and just LOVE them!

(Personally I'm not seeing the PL thing as anything innovative - that concept has been around for over 10 years at least!)

I have been doing it with my photos where I have alot from one event and don't want to "scrap" them all. I just throw the extra in pocket pages next to the scrapped page. Only thing, I don't decorate the pocket page. I just load it up with photos.

But, I have to admit I'm a little concerned about what I'm doing to do withy the back side of the pocket page. I keep my books chronological.... so, what the next layout is only a single page? I'm probably over obsessing, but wondering what others do on the other side of these?

keep the examples coming. Thanks Tracie for starting this thread! I am jazzed to try this & even mix on some digital.

Thanks Lisa for mentioning embellishing outside the page! BTW - your pages are fabulous.

Are there PL type pages for post bound albums? Which manufacturer?Like busybee, I am switching from CM strap albums & I like the "closeness" of the 2 pages spreads versus the gap you get with 3-ring. KWIM?

I started doing this when my DD was born 5 yrs ago. I love this method. I use the We R Memory Keepers page protectors. I use the ones that have 6 pockets for 4x6's, and the ones that have a big 12"x6" pocket and 4x6's on the rest. It provides enough room for creativity but also gets the photos in the album!

However, i don't think it lends itself that well to chronological scrapping unless you are supergreat at planning everything out so you have no gaps. I gave up the chrono method. The same year is in the same album, roughly in the right order.

I would love to do this!! What albums do you like for this concept?

busybeemom - All the examples shown in this thread use 3-ring albums. I don't know anyone who does pocket page scrapbooking (aka Project Life style) that uses a post-bound but I could be wrong. I've only ever seen it with 3 ring albums.

(Personally I'm not seeing the PL thing as anything innovative - that concept has been around for over 10 years at least!)

scrapshopper! - While the concept of pocket page scrapbooking HAS been out there for years (I have loads of divided protectors by American Crafts made long ago) - no one had introduced 3x4 and 4x6 cards specifically to use with the pockets until Becky Higgins. Also, no one had made a configuration of pockets that included a space specifically for journaling. To me, the regular divided protectors are just like a photo album, of course you can jazz them up but the breakthrough that really caught on was adding in the wonderfully designed cards and Becky started that and of course now every company in the business has them!

I have to admit I'm a little concerned about what I'm doing to do withy the back side of the pocket page. I keep my books chronological.... so, what the next layout is only a single page? I'm probably over obsessing, but wondering what others do on the other side of these?

djsunday - I also file my layouts chronologically but I can usually make my pictures work in any format. For example, let's say you did this and had a 12x12 layout on the left and a pocket page on the right. Once you turn the page, you have to fill up the back of that pocket page. So let's say you only had 3 photos you wanted to scrap. I would put those 3 photos in and fill the rest of the slots with Project Life style 3x4 or 4x6 cards. I guess if you're really concerned about it - when you're choosing the pocket protector for the first layout - you need to think about what you'll be scrapping next. I've seen people just fill the backside with patterned paper but I could never waste space in an album like that. I just make it work.

Maybe someone doing this style can answer that question? I'm planning to use this format mostly to scrap events and holidays in which case I always have like 20 photos at least!

LisaSwift - Thank you sharing those! You slay me!!!!! You are super talented girl!!! Wow!

I love, love, love this idea! I've been struggling with what to do with all my PL cards, and this would be a great way to not only use more of them, but get the extra photos of an event or a vacation scrapped without having to do another 12x12 layout.
Funny that I did use pocket pages in the back of my daughter's wedding album for all the leftover reception pictures. Can't wait to try incorporating my PL stash!
