I don't know that it is really about people who get free benefits wanting more benefits, but I do think that social networking and pinterest and so forth have raised the bar for what people consider to be "normal" consumerism.

Honestly, I think this is part of the problem. There is no sense of a "starter" house, a "starter" car, a "starter" life any more. Everyone sees the pictures and assumes that is how everyone lives.

No. The reality is SO much different than the photos. Most of us have to start off with the smaller, the less than, the used, the non-name brand. Shoot, for the vast majority, that is the way we live-either because of circumstances or because a sense of frugality.

A friend of mine is a pastor's wife. I saw a post she was tagged in by someone (who I assumed belonged to their church) saying that they "welcomed all blessings, including cash"...

My two nieces wanted about a thousand in funding for a 'church' mission trip to Mexico and 'deserved it' because of their 'terrible' lives. Meanwhile, our church mission trip was 2 hours away to help tornado victims.

I looked into it a little more and discovered it had nothing to do with their church. They just found it online and thought it would be fun.

One of them worked fundraisers to pay for most of hers. The other got jealous at the last minute and claimed she had found Jesus. Meanwhile continually posting sexually explicit and drug related pics on her social media.

They posted pictures of plane tickets their mom got them just to visit out of state friends while pleading they needed money for the mission trip.

My son, same age as them gets mission trip mail due to various vbs' he has attended but has never ever considered it because of the costs. He has also never flown anywhere.

I elected not to contribute and was 'shamed' for not believing in it. The week they got back, they had a horrible physical fight and had to be separated by the police.

But I'm the bad aunt...

Thankfully - I haven't seen this. I might be lucky, but none of my friends have such an over the top sense of entitlement. How weird to go through life thinking that everyone else owes you everything.

What I want to know is WHO actually gives them money? Are there really hard working people who are willing to part with their cash just because someone wants a dinner out or a new iPad? Who DOES that? And does it ever get old? or do they just keep shelling out their hard earned money?

I can't wrap my brain around the mindset of daring to asking for others to pay your way - nor can I wrap my brain around the mindset of encouraging that behavior by giving them money.

I have a friend who, while going through a divorce and then after, would post this type of crap. It really irritated me because had she listened to any of her friends, she would have gotten a much better deal in the divorce and alimony. Then after letting her ex walk all over her, she wanted us to fund her shit. Wasn't happening.

I have another friend who really struggles financially. She does what she can, but often it is not enough. I sometimes randomly mail her a $25 gc to king soopers or walmart or something. She would never ask for stuff publicly. She might decline an invitation because of funds, but then one of us will pick up the bill.

I think TV has a large part in that as well. Even when a show is about someone who is in lesser paying jobs they still have a nice house, nice car, hit the local bar/restaurant frequently, shop in high end stores as part of the story line.

My sister and her two boys live with me. She has been unemployed since December. She got a job recently but doesn't start until June 1. So if everyone here gives me a dollar we should be able to make it thru till then. Seriously I can't pay my oil bill so if you have a spare dollar.

None of my facebook friends would ask for money like that but I have heard of it and always wondered who gives these people money.

It's not really new though. About 13 years ago when we lived in Austin, TX I would see kids along road intersections collecting for some high school group. I used to ask why that was collecting but homeless people at the same intersection were begging and would get dirty looks. Getting something for nothing seems to be very popular.
