How much would you pay for a Celeb class?

Lately, my LSS has been offering a lot of classes with SB celebs. I know this sounds cool, but the classes tend to be out of my price range, and getting more expensive each time. The current class is all day, with 4 celebs, each doing a project. The cost is $165. Prior classes have ranged from $50 to $80. Most feature one layout or minibook. So my question is, how much is too much? Would it depend on the project, or would you pay just to take a class from a celeb?

For me it would depend on the project AND the celeb. I would be have to be interested in both. In addition, I do have a limit on what I can spend on classes because it cuts into my supply budget. I know $165 is too high for me. I'll spend up to $40 for a project I really like taught by someone I really like. I feel $165 is a lot even for an all day class but others may feel differently.

It definitely depends on whether I like the celeb's style, and if the projects sound fun.

I imagine the celebritites need to pay for transportation and lodging, which raises the price of a class.

All in all, that does sound like a lot, the $165, especially since some *retreats* are about that a day. However, given the above, and supply and demand, maybe it isn't?

I wanted to take that class too but felt the price was a bit high for what you're getting. I was excited till i saw the cost.

i cant imagine i would take that class

165 will buy A LOT of scrapping supplies

Plus i prefer classes that teach design theory....not just copying a page. I have 6 years of design trainign and unless it was something i hadnt learned

THat being said Id pay that much ot take a series of photography/digital enhancement classes. And actually hope to look into that in the future.

$165!!!

Truth be told, I would not pay even a reasonable fee for a 'celeb class'. If I really liked her/his work that much, I'd go out and buy their book and get it all there for much less

Usually, the sb store pays the celebs transportation, hotel and food bills. One of the LSS's in our area once called CK to inquire about getting a celeb. She was told what the booking fee was and alos that she needed to pay for their transportation, lodging, food, and any transportation needed to get them to the LSS. I was trying to get the LSS owner to book someone right after we had CKU in Orlando last year and then they would already be in Florida and you would only pay for their flight from Orlando. But, then she found out she would have to pay for them to fly out too. So in the end, depending on who it is, etc.....it can get very expensive for the LSS and I am sure that sometimes the cost needs to be added onto the class expense. Kiki

I paid $60 for a celeb class at a recent crop. I can't say that I learned any new techniques, but it was a great class and project. And since I don't get this type of opportunity often, it was well worth it!

I think I know what store you are referring to. If is the same one, the instructors are Tia Bennett, Rhonna Ferrar, Emily Falconbridge and Kim Henkel. Two of those people design products for different companies. For 4 classes that works out to about $42 each. It seems like the trend is for this type of thing. That Heidi Swapp retreat is almost $500 for a few days of classes with a variety of celebs.

Oh, this is my local scrapbook store Scrapbook Oasis
I think it sounds pretty cool and there is a crop that is $40 if the $165 is too much. It sounds like a feast of creativity. Where else do you get that kind of talent all in one place besides a CKU? I am going, it is my "mother's day" gift.

I don't think I'd pay $40 for any class unless I was going to get a lot out of it -- lots of techniques and a very good project. I'm taking Lisa B's class at CKC for $18 and a class taught by Erin Lincoln for $15 although I don't know if she designed the class or CK did. Either way, it will be fun to meet her.

I understand about paying the celebs transportation and expenses and the money has to come from somewhere, so maybe LSS's are not really the right venue for their classes. I'm going to take 5 classes at CKC and I think my total bill is something like $72. That seems much more reasonable.

But with that said, I took a different Lisa B class last year and it was an hour and a half long and I think $22. I loved meeting her but I probably wouldn't have gone higher than $30 for that experience.

Not what they want to charge. :0)

I think if there's a class list and they are all listed for (example)$40.00 and then it says excluding Tim Holtz his class will be $55.00 it's not worth it.

I think fame in scrapbooking is just luck, and someone with too much time on their hands to keep on submitting page after page.

I think for those celebs it's totally worth it!! Especially if that works out to only 42 bucks a class. I paid way more than that at cku!! And this IS a great mother's day treat! We deserve it!!! Come on, what did you spend on fast food last week? Me,..way too much. I'd rather eat top ramen and spend my day scrapping!!

I think 165 is okay depending on the celebs. I personally would not 165 to have classes by those designers. I don't mind paying to take classes from celebs (espeically since I just got back from cku a chicago) and have taken a class with ali for $70 but I want those classes to be by BIG name celebs.

Honestly I wouldn't pay that for the classes they are offering but if it was a different set of celebs and different classes I would certainly consider it.

I learn alot and get inspired by just being around them. It's also a day out for me (with lunch included) so I would probably go ahead and do it. But then again I probably wouldn't buy a lot of products when I left the lss.

I would never pay that much for a class! You can buy a lot of supplies for $165 and get layout ideas on line.

I personally haven't taken classes in quite a while. I prefer to spend the $$ on picking out my own supplies. $20 gets me a lot of new papers and embellies instead of a two page layout.

I think it depends on what I'm going to learn. I'm spending $110 tomorrow on 2 soldering classes so I can learn how to make sterling silver jewelry using a kiln and PMC.

Who knows, maybe I'll solder something on paper! LOL!

Heidi Swapp classes are now $55 in Mesa for two hours.
One interesting thing I learned at the CK convention today was apparently, CK discourages companies from offering classes during the convention at the nearby LSS's. I guess they feel it would compete with the classes at the convention.

165!!! wow call me CHEAP, but there is no way i can justify paying that much to see ANYBODY, yes it may be an experience and blah blah, but with that kind of money you can buy enough supplies for 3 or 4 fun projercts , an idea book AND a nice little lunch.
i love scrapbooking and although i spend WAY too much MONEY, i try to save a little here and there, i think i would much rather take that money buy supplies and have a little crop/party with my friends, you guys can Tivo a project and then do it surrounded by appetrizers and drinks!

i go by the sample. if i like it then i'd be willing to spend 60 bucks tops...and that's if supplies are included. at the end of the day all i really want to do is be creative and make something interesting or fun. I get that stores like to book celebrities because of the "pull," and I'd imagine a new store could benefit from who the particular celebrity can attract to their store, but good service and smartly stocked shelves can create just as loyal a fan base without having to depend on celeb scrapbookers to get folks in your store. I have also found, after taking a few celeb workshops myself, that great scrapbookers don't always make great teachers. this is the most i've ever written on two peas. I love learning new things, but i like being able to pay my bills too.

I think those celebs are great and all but I would not pay 165 for classes with them. I think they would be better off selling each class separately for 4o bucks. I would probably take "a" class, but not the whole group of them. That is just too much money imo.

Thanks for your imput. I know there are expenses in booking celebs, but I just feel the prices are getting out of hand. I used to take classes there when they ran $40-$45, but once they started featuring 'name' scrappers, the prices have steadily gone up. I really got sticker shock on this one, so I decided to post and get some other opinions. For myself, I figure I can check out their work online, or even buy their book. Then I can get a ton of supplies, and still bring it in for way under $165.

I don't think $165 is bad for 4 classes since it averages out to about $42 per class. HOWEVER, I would have to consider a few things before I signed up. First of all, do I like the "celebrity" that would be the teacher and is it HER project. Also, it's one thing to pay $42 for a class that you do a 2 page layout versus a class that you make an actual project - let's say a mini album or something altered, kwim??! Will you be getting $42 worth of supplies in the class?? That's something to consider too. For me, there are certain instructors (I can't call them celebrities) that I don't think I'd care how much it cost since I would get a chance to mee them. Case in point, Donna, Ali, Heidi and probably Stacy J.

I want to play the Devil's Advocate here. Why do you think these ladies are celebrities?

We helped make them celebs because we love what they do to help make our scrapping style better or more unique. We also love the products they design and promote. More importantly, they are genuine, honest-to-goodness real people - not movie celebs that hide behind sunglasses when they travel.

To come to your LSS they must leave their families for time on end, constantly fly from one city to another, spend the night in a strange hotel, and eat on the run at airport fast food places or even room service if they get to the hotel before it shuts down. What would you charge for that type of life? They are nothing but traveling salesmen and what fun is that?

Please give these ladies and the LSS's a break. You want to meet them in person, take a class from them and get their autograph – all for free?

Trust me - they don't come cheap to be at your LSS, but just to get them there is a huge deal for your LSS. The man hours that your LSS owner spends jumping through hoops with all the legal entities involved is unbelievable - oh yes, they have to sign legal contracts before anything is set in stone. Then there is travel logistics that your LSS has to set up, class times, class preparation, advertising the special event, etc. The LSS isn't making a dime off the appearance of these celebs, they are doing it for you – the general public.

Yes, these ladies are celebs and if you get a chance to take a class that is less than $50 you should consider yourself very lucky.

All-in-all it is a matter of personal opinion; some people like to say they have a Prada or Gucci purse, I like to say I have book autographed by Donna Downey, Ali Edwards or Brenda Walton.

Those ladies make my memories more complete...the purse will be gone in five years!!!

I've taken lots of classes at the store that the OP is referring too. The event that she is talking about is a "Freestyle" event. The store has arranged for about 6 of the artists from the new "Freestyle" book to come and teach a day of classes. Actually it's a weekend event with four classes on one day for $165 and it includes lunch. Each designer is teaching a class. The projects look amazing! Personally I don't think of these people as "celebs", just amazingly talented and creative people. I think the reason there is so much excitement isn't so much because they're "celebs" but it's because these are people who are well known and extremely talented. It's not like you can take classes from these people every day. I really wish I could go because I'm sure the classes will be awesome.

I've taken lots of classes from "celebs" and the $165 is just about right. I paid $250 for three classes with Ali Edwards in Jan. I paid $150 for 3 classes from Donna Downey and $150 for 3 classes from Elsie Flannigan, both of them were at the same store that the Freestyle event is at. $165 seems like a lot, but it's really only $41 per class. Plus you get lunch too. $41 isn't bad at all. I've paid more for classes that weren't taught by a well known artist. In fact I've taken several art journal and stamping classes at stamp stores that were $70 each and students pretty much had to provide everything for the class.

I've actually had more fun at the classes I've been to locally than I have had the four CKUs I've been to. The projects we did in these classes were much more involved and were more than just a layout. For example, I left Ali's classes with three completed albums. And these weren't little 4x4 albums that only had 5 pages in them. These were complete albums with over 20 pages and had journaling, and lots of detail to them. Also because these classes are much longer than the typical 60-90 min classes at events like CKU, you really get a chance to talk to the teachers and "hang out". You can chat with them and pick their brain and in the end you end up coming home having learned a lot.

I'm not trying to dismiss anyone's feeling or opinions. Each person is going to have their own thoughts on what is too much to pay for something and what isn't too much. It all comes down to what you feel comfortable paying and if you feel the classes are worth it.

I paid between $40-$50 for classes with Donna Downey. I thought it was a tad much but it was Donna. I have taken 3 with her total this year. I felt she was worth it. Ali E. is coming to my LSS next January and hopefully I can take something with her too.

OK, this is what I think. I think I need to move to California or some other state because in Florida, especially where I live, we NEVER see anybody. The previous poster from California posted that in January she took classes from Ali Edwards, also recently took classes from Donna Downey and Elsie Flannigan. I wish the stores down here would give us the opportunity to take classes like that!!! The only time I get to take classes with anybody like that is when I sign up for CKU. Now, I know Ruban Rouge in Palm Harbor near Tampa books people but that is a 5 hour drive for us from way down south. So, this is not meant to be a post so that you can feel sorry for me or listen to me vent----I am hoping other South Florida peas and also store owners will read this and realize we would like this opportunity also. Maybe other Peas in this area will read this and say "oh yeah" let's get some action going on down here.

I mean really---you can't beat it down here!!! Beautiful weather, sunny when you are dealing with snow, beautiful beaches, etc..... Who wouldn't want to come teach a class down here?? Kiki

I would only pay a little more than for a regular class which IMO, is usually way too much. Our LSS charge around 17-25 dollars for classe that make a two page spread or maybe 4 cards...that is one of the reasons why I think classes are dying down in this area. I personally am not at all in awe of, or impressed by sbing "celebrities." In fact I have taken a couple classes by a sbing cellebrity who lives in this area and they were fine but no better than some of the other instructors that taught there, and actually at the time she wasn't as well known and the classes were reasonably priced...but $165, way too much for one day of classes, IMO, but as I said I dont get into sbing celebrities.

I posted earlier, but I just wanted to add that I don't think that anyone thinks that the LSS's are going to get rich from having these celeb classes. I'm sure they are very expensive to run before all is said and done and I'm sure it's a lot of work to arrange the whole thing. Then you have to make sure you have enough students to justify the cost.

It's just a personal issue whether or not you would choose to spend that money. I'd likely pay the $40 for one if it were one of my absolute favorite celebs, but for me, $165 is a lot for a few layouts. But we are all different and everyone has their own things that they'd spend more money on. I like to by SB supplies, but I have a friend who loves to buy very expensive haircare products from a salon while I get mine at Target. No one is wrong, its just different choices.

$165 is half the price of CKU! No way would I spend that much for classes at an LSS. I'd save it for a major scrapping event!

I think $165 for 4 classes and lunch is fine....if they are providing the materials I need to complete the projects.

That said there are certain people I would pay more for and certain people I wouldn't spend that much for. With some "celebs", you will come away with much more inspiration than your $42 bucks worth. Others, it all about a chance to meet the "celeb".

$165 would buy a lot of supplies, but I don't need more supplies. What I need is creative inspiration. I've been scrapping 8 years now and find that I get into scrapping ruts. Attending a class is a good way for me to kick start my creativity. I've been scrapping longer than most of the teachers at the LSSs and was a stamper before I was a scrapper. I have seen and done a lot. So, I would spend that or maybe more.

Ouch that is a lot of $. I know that would buy a lot of supplies. I do however keep saying that I want to take a class. I understand that it has to cost money - transportation, hotels and what not but it still is a lot of money. I would love to take a couple of these classes though if it was a project that I liked and thought I would learn something new like a new technique.

ok...i have to say, it would TOTALLY depend on the teacher, as someone else already stated.

our LSS has had Donna Downey & Ali Edwards. thought Donna's class wasn't worth the money at all...i think we were just paying for the name. having said that, Ali's classes were worth every penny...and she is coming back here in July.

i guess it just depends on your style/rationale. with Ali's classes we made 2 complete 8x8 albums that are genuinely different from what i would normally do. they were completely awesome...and i will cherish those 2 albums forever. ( i know that sounds really dramatic..lol)

Donna's classes weren't the same quality IMO. i took all 3 and was kinda disappointed. i paid $35 for some office envelopes with patterned paper on them. in hindsight i sould have spent that $$ elsewhere.

just an opinion...but just consider what you're limit is, and ask to see the completed project before you sign up.

I took an Ali class a few weeks ago about 2 hours from here. I loved being in a class with AE, but did cringe a bit at the $65 I paid for it. She did 3 classes; I only took one, but most, I think, took all 3. There was a celebrity crop the night before, too. The class I took was a chipboard spiral album. I think it was the least-good of the 3 she taught...the other 2 were the 8x8's referred to by an above poster. I like my album, it was fun to come away with a completed project, but still...the $65 was definitely for Ali's presence!

4 completed projects.
4 amazing women.
9 1/2 hours on insight and inspiration.
41.25 per project.
And did someone mention lunch?

Sounds like a deal to me.

I just made my reservation to attend the Saturday workshop. Yes, $165 sounds like a lot of money, but if I went to a CKU week-end, I would be spending a fortune. So four workshops that I am definitely attending sounds like a great day to me. A day at the spa would cost me almost that much and I wouldn't have as much fun.

Also, I just found out that Tia is going to do another class on Sunday called "I Am," for $50 and they are waiting for confirmation from Emily for another class on that same day.

Now I'm deciding if I should stay over for the night and spend another day enjoying myself. I look at all of this as ME time, and sometimes being self-centered is a good thing. It lifts the spirits and makes me forget about all the hassles and struggles in my daily life.

If you are not good to yourself, no one else will be.

I think it's difficult to evaluate the $165 cost because the wages in your part of the country may be significantly higher than the wages elsewhere. That might equal 4 hours of hourly work for one person and 15-20 hours of work for another person.

I would evaluate it based on what the class is about, what the project is, if I was going to get a discount at the store for attending the class, and if I had knowledge of the number of people attending and knew if the classroom wasn't going to be too crammed I would also take that into consideration. Then if I feel I am getting my money's worth for that event I would attend.

BB pea totally hit it on the head, i just started working scrapbook conventions and it is totally down and dirty on 'the other side of the curtain'!!

i think to each their own!! remember of everything of the person that is coming that the LSS owner has to pay for!!

I posted earlier, but I just wanted to add that I don't think that anyone thinks that the LSS's are going to get rich from having these celeb classes.

The genius in the marketing here is to keep the excitement high. That is where the scrapbooking store makes $$$. sell-the-sizzle-not-the-steak

I'm really picky about what classes I take. I always have been. For me any class that teaches me a technique is usually something that I'm interested in. A class that is we are making this one page and you are taking it home is *not* something I'm interested in taking (or teaching.) If I can tell by the description of a class that I'm going to learn something I'm intereted in and someone who has a great personality is teaching it, the *sure* I'll pay for that opportunity.

It wouldn't be worth that much to me because there aren't that many SB celebs that I want to take classes from. Especially if it was four celebs for a package deal -- what are the chances I'd want to take a class from ALL four of them? I'd much rather pick and choose which classes I want.

When Elsie was at my (not so) LSS, the classes were $35-40, and I believe the crop was $25. All totally worth it to me because I felt she had something to offer to me... the way she thinks and designs is so different from me, I wanted to soak up all her creative goodness.

But there aren't really any other scrappers I feel that way about. So a grab bag of 4 different celebs wouldn't be for me.

Oh and Tia ended up sitting next to me for one of Elsie's classes, so I got to crop with her and soak up her creativity as a bonus!
