Good morning, scrappers! This will be a productive week in that we'll tackle what is likely the mother of all procrastination topics - negatives! But it will be sleep-inducing and mind-numbing, I won't lie to you. But think of how good it will feel to have this off your "to do" list finally!

Go check it out on my blog and the first one organized - wins!

Stacy your TV confession made me smile. Nice to know you have a dark {attic} side. I'll have to cut an inch off your pedastal feet. ha, ha! GREAT job - you are so whipping us all into shape!

Okay, okay - I promise I will dig mine out of the upstairs closet. I have some CM storage boxes I can put them in.

Let's talk keeping up with technology here. I have shot three modes: film, APS film {which was its own breed} and then went digital in 2004. The negatives and the APS film canisters are my dilemna.

I have priced out at Scrapbookpictures.com that to convert one APS canister is $3/canister. I have to mail them there and then they will turn the canister into digital images and upload them to my account on their website. This IS my end game goal. I am still catching up on printing but plan in January to start mailing 10 canisters a week.

I have never asked them the price to convert negatives in sleeves to digital uploaded images but I would imagine it's about the same. After I get rid of all those pesky canisters I will go back to sleeved negatives.

So, do any of you plan to convert to digital? I really, really have a heart to do this because the first 10 years of my sons' lives are "trapped" in there and our first 7 years of marriage in the good 'ole pre-children days.... And - have any of you done this already???

Goals this week:
1. Gather all my film canisters into one container and put TO DO on my calendar alert for January 4. {If I were an over-achiever, I might go ahead and print up a bunch of mailing labels to scrapbookpictures.com.)
2. Pull all the negatives in sleeves out of closet and move them into one CM powersort box and place that underneath the film canister container.
3. Straighten up that closet to make room for my memorabilia file bins that are {sadly} still enjoying my kitchen counter.

Way to go Penny!! Those are some great goals!

I hate to even admit this but I don't have hardly any negatives. I'm really going to have to dig to find any as I've been digital since college and any photos before that are from my mom. So this is an easy week for me!

So glad that wookie has to endure this week with us. A dose of your own medicine! This is a project that that I have tried to tackle a few times over the years and never followed through on. I am worried that I may have even thrown away some negatives over the years (insert shutter and a collective oh my)

Like Penny mentioned I have most of my childrens lives caught on negatives. And really those photos are precious because back then we really didn't take many photos.

I too have many different types of negatives...I think I might investigate the cost to switch these over before figuring out what to do with what I have.... did I just hear the TV set go on?????

thanks kelli I didn't want to be the first one to say that this wasn't a big issue

Ok I know this next statement is going to cause a big *gasp* from some people...a while back I threw away a bunch of negatives. I went through pictures, decided I'd never print anything from them and out they went. They were pictures from jr high and my only goal is to get the prints out of the magnetic sticky album and into a safe SB, I have no desire to search through and print more.

I've been digital since senior year of college and my mom has all the older pictures so I have nothing to work on this week Maybe I'll look at all my stuff I didn't work on last week Good luck to all of you working on negatives...maybe you'll find some really cute picture that you love

Count me in as feeling old too!

I've been shooting 35mm film for years and years. In fact, when digital came out I swore I'd never switch to it. I can still remember being at a concert and talking to the other photographers with press passes. They had digital Canon cameras and I still had my trusty Nikon film camera. I said how I thought film was better in low light. Maybe it was back then. DH finally talked me into "trying" digital, and of course I haven't been back to film since. Although back when I quit my wedding photography business, I was still using film.

I graduated from high school in 1978.

I don't have that many negs... My ex has them. He only wanted his "art" photos, NOT photos of our kids and all the negs were in his workroom. I grabbed a handful of them that I came across before we moved out that I never looked at and have no idea what they are of! They could be of the kids or "raindrop on a window screen stuff" that he used to photograph all the time. LOL

Time to get them out this week! Are you gals gonna print them or just organize them by year, decade,???

I am very happy to say that I tackled this many moons ago.
It took me awhile as I was putting the negatives up to the window to see what was on them (cringe).

I put them in slide negative holders that fit in a 3 ring binder, I wrote the date (my camera had the date imprint that shows on the pictures) and or the occasion. Ya I am a bit OCD. My hubby then put them in his safe which is fire/water safe.

Now I can work on another area, since I just started this.

Question:

How can I go back and find what other peas have done or said about how they are working on the challenges.
I have been on Wookiemouse' blog. But how do I go back on 2peas to see. I tried to do a search, no luck.

Just wondering if anyone has saved the older link challenges messages.

I hope this makes sense as I suck at explaining things lol.

Hmm. I wonder if I have many of these.I used to toss them in my pre-archive family memories phase. I have only been digital for about 3-4 yrs. I know for sure I still have 110 negatives..:-0 I don't quite know what to store them in so I'm off to read the blog.

I don't know how much I want to make them digital or to reprint them. Heck I don't think many of them are dated. We'll see.

I. Feel. Old.

LOL - yes, Vicky - who knew so many of our P's were baby P's!

Well, you gals who have digi pix of yourself in Junior High and High School and College should really count yourself fortunate. In the AE Yesterday/Today class right now many of us are grappling with the LACK of photos of ourselves in our pre-20's years....

Which is kinda' what is driving me to convert all of my images to digital - I want my boys one day to have a plethora of photos at their disposal....or I at least want to make a fun slide show for their HS grad. {There, I said it!} ha, ha.

Vicky, I have used Scancafe and can highly recommend them. If anyone wants to use them try to get on their mailing lists. They do special offers all the time.

I DID dig into my closet last night. {There's a TV in that room.} I have 15 of those video-case like holders of APS canisters, all organized and labeled from back in the SAHM diaper days. (15x12=180 canisters.) Then I have probably another 60 canisters loose, all gathered neatly now in a bin. {The boys stopped napping.} So, since I am an accountant, I can tell you that if I convert 10 of those a week, it will take me 24 weeks to do that. Almost half a year. But it's all good b/c DS is only a freshman. And mother always taught me the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

I have just a shoebox full really of strip negatives. They are now pulled together and I may just throw them in a binder in some page protectos for now. As far as converting them to digital, I'm gonna' pull a Scarlett O'Hara on those and think about them "tomorrow". They will be definitely behind the APS canisters on the priority list. I guess some of you young P's don't even know what an APS canister is!?! ha, ha.

Okay - the finale story about my closet digging last night:
This week in our AE class we are supposed to be doing a LO about our ancestors. Well, as the youngest daughter of 4 of the youngest daughter of 9, photos of anytime before I was born are virtually non-existent. But, lurking down in a bag by the negatives was a treasure trove.

I confess, years ago, I snagged a few photos from my mom's at Christmas time and they were in that shopping bag! Pictures of my grandparents and greatgrandparents, of me on a horse with my Papa, my kindergarten grad photos, pix of us getting our first puppy! Probably about 75 photos. I totally did not remember until I looked at them that I had them!! I wanted to shout or cry - I settled for doing a happy dance in my kitchen. My house of guys was really not empathethic.

So, there, Stacy - that's my ultimate Organizational Pay-off. And I snagged those photos up last night and knew immediately what to do: scan them and put them in my LOM system!! {And I will return the originals to mother sometime eventually....I pinky promise.}

LOM category drawers = free from a local Pea
Stamp rolodex = $11
2 cartridges Label Machine tape = $35
Binders, Page Protectors, Iris Cases and Generations Envelopes = $95
Costco 3-up Photo Albums = $145

A functioning, organized scraproom = Priceless!!

dancing in my chair for you Penny!! What a great find!!!

I got an email from Scrapbookpictures.com and they do negative scanning as well. I think if I read it correctly 14 cents per picture on a CD.

I pulled "the box" out last night but ignored it once I had retreived it from its basement home. Maybe tonight???

Is there an easy (easier???) way to view whats on the negatives? Any tips would be helpful--because back (way back) before digital on a roll of 24 you really only got 2-3 great pictures and maybe another 2-3 OK pictures-- I would hate to send in frame after frame of blur.

I am thinking if you have a lightbox for embossing you can lay the negatives on the light box to see the images. {That is harkening back to my goldie oldie high school days when we actually <gasp> went into the darkroom to develop film and used negative strips to select photos for yearbook.....}

The neat thing about them is also that they will automatically upload the images to your account as part of their service. And, this to me, is invaluable in its time saving. Of course, they are my 3rd party printer of choice, too, so that sways me. Good to know - thanks.

Penny is right-a light box is the best way to view negatives. Also from a camera store, go in and buy a loupe. Not sure if that is the correct spelling. It's basically a magnifier that is designed to sit over the negative (in a protective plastic holder) and magnify what's there so you can see it easier. They are pretty cheap, but REALLY help.

Also, I highly recommend that instead of a 3 ring binder (which you have to be careful of-it could be made of a dangerous plastic that emits fumes that can be harmful to your negatives), a storage binder called, "Besfile by Beseler". I just checked Google and they are selling for $8.95. These are also 3 ring binders, but they snap closed completely and look like a box. Hard to describe. It keeps the dust out since your negatives are then sealed inside (inside their plastic sleeve pages) and is made from "safe" plastic.

Of course, I'm really picky because I'm a former professional photographer, but hey-these negs are also more precious to me as each year passes (my family negs), and I want to keep them safe.

Good for you Penny!

I'm looking to invest in a negative scanner. Or possibly a photo scanner as i have most of those pictures printed off, but not they aren't in a form I can manipulate or crop. I think photo scanners are cheaper.

I have negatives in about three places in different storage. Not on purpose, just lack of follow through.

I started the binder system a few years ago, so I'm ahead on the jump start. BUT this is part of why negs are in three places. I haven't finished converting them.

It's the last week of the six weeks, so I will not be working on it as I need to focus on grading labs. BUT, I at least know what direction I'm taking until I can get a negative scanner.

Vicki - I can up your I.feel.old ante.... my baby pictures are actually slides. I have done the light box thing and it's still hard for me so I'm gonna check out that thing Debbie suggests.

Thanks Debbie in MD for your great tip! I'm gonna check em' out.

So Penny, once you upload them to that service, can you crop them like a digital photo? I'm wondering if I need to do the math and see if a photo scanner/negative scanner is cheaper or scanning the negatives a few each month is the best financially....food for thought.

Yes, Jo, after the negative is converted you end up with a digital picture that can be manipulated in software like a digital print today. I do not know how many megapixels it would have though.

ugh the diapers!
*side note story: DD just in the last couple weeks has gotten back to NOT crying when she sees her potty. It plays music and that scared her so then there were tears everytime she'd see the thing. actually got her to sit on it today but she wasn't happy. (she's not quite 22 months so we have time) but ugh the dipaers!

Random question: how are we going to hold each other accountable (stay organized) when we're done with the challenge???

And I am doing really good on keeping it together - I am buying stuff and doing stuff and you can't tell - my room still looks great.

Hello???!!! (this just confirms my suspicions about posting...)

I have made several suggestions that we should totally do a Scrap tour! I have a full size van that fits 7; lots of room, tv, great jazz lights.... we should so do this!

Of course, if you come to my house I may put you to work making some dadgum decions.

I am over 1/2 way on to organizing my papers.
Boy I give you women credit for organizing your stuff. But why did we have to start with paper? It has taken my 2 days so far. LOL

I am posting my progress on the older boards pertaining to the correct challenge Week.

Wish me luck,

Jo - I swear I read your megalong posts, just so you'll read mine

I actually conquered the beast that is negatives years ago. I bought PrintFile negative preservers (see here) and have them in a archival binders that Michael's used to sell. I also organized my grandfather's 5 carousels of 70s slides in another binder. They are mostly of Baby Bree - so fun to compare how much my daughter, who looks Daddy, makes the same facial expressions as I did.

I do hope to scan them someday, but I haven't yet decided to eat that particular elephant.

So I'm old enough to remember slides, 35mm, disc and 120 (anyone else got those negatives?), and once upon a time had time to organize them, but I'm still changing diapers. Lucky me for waiting til my thirties to have kids.

ETA: Stacy- its nice to see you aren't entirely perfect, oh Fearless Leader!

loveall crafts - I'm still sorting paper so you are not the only one. I had celebrated long ago that I was done...DD asked that her stash be stored intermingled with mine as she only scraps at my house. Even if she has something on with a friend, she brings the friend here and they crop till they drop!!!

I have 2 big bags sitting on my scraproom countertop to sort thru tomorrow. Of course one bag also holds ribbon, embellies, stickers, etc.
Oh, I feel like I just joined the challenge all over again...teehee

I do think it makes more sense to intermingle them...just not looking forward to the task!

Penny, I started converting my APS film earlier this year. I had had it done at Costco and I think it was about the same price wise. The lady there told me that it is actually really good film and converts really well. I have been really impressed with the quality. That is the camera I had for my 1st child's baby pics and pre-kids marriage time. I am so glad I found all of the canisters.

Thanks Buckeye - that is sure good to know!! I am scanning in tonight all the goodies I found Monday night. Getting ready to print some and try to do my AE class LO for the week. I am behind - family commitments took ALL of my weekend and I want to get my LO done before she gives us another assignment tomorrow! Geez its wednesday already and I am still staring at my box! I would take a picture of it but its got all the reminents of school photos hanging out of it too and I am sure that someone would have a heart attack seeing the horrible way I have treated these "leftovers" over the past 20+ years!!

Jo- You will be first the first stop on the bus tour since it was originally your idea!! better get cracking!! hehehe

Bree- Thank goodness my Dad has retained all the slides to date! Don't even want to think about them--

Penny- So understand the committments...

Tracy- I can't keep up with more than one board--so be sure to let us know what your up to on this one too!

Tracy - I was going to go to 'paper' week to respond to you - glad you are here too. Good for you and keep it going! Some of us are still hopping around on some weeks, but generally post our progress on the current week. (p.s. - it took me about four weeks ..uh...maybe longer ..to get paper in line..)

Hello???!!! (this just confirms my suspicions about posting...)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

What suspicions?
__________________________________________

(Penny - how do you do that thing where you copy something someone else posted and put it in a new post where it shows you copy them? - I just did 'copy' 'paste' and added my own line.. ?)

anyway...suspicions that it's really easy to say just about anything online (or really easy to be extra honest and nasty in replies especially to those you've never actually met) when you would never actually follow through ...there is very little chance that I'd actually have enough nerve to have you come here and let you see this disaster....even though it was my idea. Few months ago, I was reading this old scrapper's organization book one night and told Vicki that I found this chapter where two women swapped rooms to critique each other's spaces. Thought we should try, and it grew to a Scrap Tour.

Hey - maybe this could be a new TV show - You know? Like Wife Swap? Or Trading Spaces? hmmm... I was going to bed. Now I have to think of a clever title for a show that will never exist.

This is how I do it. BEFORE you Reply, highlight what you want to copy and then hit CTRL-C simultaneously.

Then, hit Reply and down here below the Smilies is the Insert PeaCode section. Hit Quote. pops up on this reply screen we're in. Go IN BETWEEN the two s and hit CTRL-V simultaneously and your quote will pop in between those two quote marks and that is what sets it off.

I guess, now that I am reading this, you could just type vs. hit that button. I do that with some of my favorite smilies.

If anyone has another way to do this, feel free to share.

Now - back to who posts what, I totally stay away from the NSBR board here b/c one time I was over there and this little gal posted about how should she cut her hair and they flamed her b/c she had stuff in the background of her photo - one P typed "How about you get off the computer and clean up that %#$##$ in your house" and I was like OMG!!! And there are things said over here that lift my brow but I try never to rise to the bait....AND I even censor what I type - like now.... because I don't want to bring on the flames....

I'll leave it to the Fantastic Four to flame on!

I printed pictures last night from my treasure troves I scanned in - 28 little 2.5" squares. I [HOPE, HOPE} to get my LO done tonight! Isn't scrapping so much fun?

I'm not sure if I confused everyone, but I meant that I posted "sure come on over for a scrap tour of my house" when I actually would be in hiding. (it's so easy to say 'anything' online...)

(and I did do a semi- flame today as I copied a quote from our fearless leader and added 'that' to someone who was totally dishing a LSS in San Antonio that I love ... I'm now off to confessional ... right after my stamp class )

you gals are a hoot..

I'm not tackling negatives any further this week. I realize that my mess is too much with my paper week just concluding (see Tracy some uf us are still meddling in paper). I think I'm finished, I do still have the matter of my scraps to tackle, again. Scrapping makes a mess sometimes.

I'm straddling stamps now that I've bought some new rubber and my storage needs to be expanded a bit (darn Hero Arts sales 50% off)

I'm having such a hard time with putting things back where they go.

Mother Wookie should be proud!!

I am seriously getting tired of reading about all the fun you and Jo are having out playing and buying stamps!! BAHHH I went and bought Martha Stewart punch!!! And to be a rebel I am not putting it away tonight!! its gonna sit on my scrap table for me to admire!!

Hobby too funny about running out of room! And I agree - not the most fun time of year to handle negatives - but then again, when is? They are yucky all the way around.

Vicky, what punch did you get? That is my drawer that in the last two weeks has grown from ONE to TWO. I am out of room now in the drawers. May have to go to the hanging shoe bag. But I am prepared - on it. But I DO NOT leave anything out!

Well ladies I'm happy to report that I have finished the paper challenge. Whew that was crazy. But I have to thank you Wookiemouse.

Ok I posted pics on the older challenge pages but hope you don't mind me posting on this one, even though you guys have done them already. But I am proud of my progress and if I keep it up I think I may need some encouragement LOL.

Ok Here is pics of my tiny scrapbooking/craft room.

Okay Tracy! LOL I think you win some kinda' prize for actually laying it all out there! I loved the paper pics!

Ah Vicki - do tell! which punch did you get? and did you get it on clearance? I, too, have grown my punch supply by 6 w those MS punches..haven't cracked the boxes except for the Spider as I'm still convincing myself I need them.

I went to a great Stamp Club class last night and tonight I had an unexpected night off (expected to be helping a friend who just had surgery or another who just moved) and went to a Cricut class. Oh my! It's gonna cost me! Wanna sell my baby Bug and get a big Bug now! Vinyl, t-shirts, etched glass, chipboard,....oh my!

Just wanted to check in on the process for posting pics of past weeks. I finally got the photos of my stamp inventory into my gallery.
Darn those pesky 20 photo limits. LOL

Should I attach them to the thread for Stamp week or post them on the most current thread...

I am just using photocopies of the wheeled stamps that I cut out of a really old Stampin Up catty for my inventory. I figure it is not important to see the exact size of those stamps as they are quite obvious. All the rest I stamped off.

The only bad news is I haven't stamped off my acrylic stamps. I finally got them all conditioned with the white eraser. What a dusty job. Hope to finish them next week while DH is at work.

I chose to do my inventory on 81/2 x11 pages rather than a rodalex. I know it probably sounds lame but now all my ideas and fodder to create more ideas are in one place. I put the contact sheets in the binder that holds all my torn out ideas from magazines etc.
I figure having them all together that should help with my memory problems from the concussion. It is amazing to me how many things I found that I forgot I owned, during these last weeks.LOL

Give me some feedback on where I should post my photos.
Thanks organized peas....

Maureen Post em here!! It is amazing what you find when you go through them one by one. I have found I use my stamps sooo much more now that I can quickly look through what I have.

Tracy- Love the red walls-- and what a fantastic job on the paper! Do tell did you put the paper on the inside or outside of your drawers? I have three drawers I need to decorate. hmmm gotta point out the labeling--hehehe that should be the number one requirement to do this challenge!

And for the inquiring minds....arch lattice is the punch... love it! sadly no sale price...

Here are the photos of my stamps and inventory sheets.
That was a huge job to stamp them off but sooo worth it. I love to glance thru the sheets and chose the stamp that way. I had forgot I had some stamps.

Oh...If anyone sees an image they fancy, drop me a peamail and I will stamp if off for you and drop it in the mail. Just tell me the colour cardstock you want it on. I promise I will do a nicer job of stamping it than I did on the inventory sheets. I just slammed them on there. LOL

Maureen great job!! Its fun to see some of the same stamps I own.. but you did throw up a reminder to me.. Christmas stamps.. I have a big bucket of them that I never did stamp off... hmm adding it to my list...

I did start to tackle this weeks project.. I stopped staring last night and emptied my box o'negatives. What a fun surprise. This box contained negatives from around 2000-2003 and most of the negatives were still in the paper envelopes that the pictures orginially came in... AND THEY WERE LABELED!! Who knew I was organized back then... Also in the box were some (ok alot) of old pictures from that same time period --this was back when you always checked the doubles box on the form just in case you wanted to share the pictures!!apparently I never shared these.

I sorted it all out and neatly put it back in the box... I have one more box to do tonight... great TV project! I do have a stack that were not labeled. I may just send those in to be developed on disk. But listen to this... my dh says to me last night.. you can just throw those away instead of sorting through them.. Does anyone really care about those???? Needless to say it was very quiet at our house last night.

<<GASP!>> Ha, ha! Sometimes they mean well, don't they?

Great job gals on catching up to us! Stamps and paper were two of my banes. Next week is albums and something about putting our new stuff up.

I stayed up until 1 last night doing a Maya Roads online crop and then I was at brake shop this morning at 8 getting those changed out. I'm worn out! Just poured me a cup of coffee and now I'm gonna' see if I can't find my jar of mojo somewhere. I need to finish my AE Yesterday/Today class assignment. Think I'll put in The Waltons and enjoy the "quiet" of my teenagers playing Call of Duty and hubby at work....

Have I thanked you lately Stacy for a wonderful room? You're the bomb.
