Browsing through the new items here and found this
Upper right hand quote by Emerson and right around the middle, a quote by George Eliot.
Can you spot it? Don't they have proofreaders? I mean, all they have to do is copy the quotes.
SMH.
Ugh. Can't ever remember how to post an image on here. |

I remember a couple of years ago finding a mistake on a Kaisercraft paper -"Happiness" was spelt with one "P".
I emailed them about it, and they replied, saying how careful they were in their production, and were actually not interested in my observation.
The word was in a large script style font and a feature of the page!

Do companies not employ proofreaders? I can't imagine it's a terribly high paying job, and I would think it would save some of these companies enough money to pay for the position! |

It's a terrible burden.
It's one thing for an individual to make grammatical or spelling errors on their layouts or other personal work, quite another for a company selling a product that contains and displays such errors.

Hell, even I caught those, and I am the worst speller on earth!! I have been known to misspell my own name!!!
Really, my layouts are full of "typo's",, I hand write my journaling, and if I misspell a word, I just move on. Everyone who knows me - knows I can't spell. BUT - this is a national product that they are SELLING. |

those are pretty darn obvious...
to us, at least.
I saw another one somewhere in the gallery, and could only shake my head at how obvious it was. (I don't remember which company it was, but it was improper use of an apostrophe and it was REALLY obvious on the paper, because the font was huge and a focal point of the paper.)

Why, yes! Yes it is. Thank you for asking.
That paper was obviously made in China.
BTW, my mom, grandfather, and stepfather all worked for years as proofreaders. Those are glaring errors for anyone who is fluent in written English. |

Really? They are not typos in a message board post. I'm a legal assistant. How would you feel if you paid my firm for a document that I typed but didn't bother to proofread?

Why yes, yes it is. I go to bed exhausted every night. But seriously??? This is isn't a typo on a messageboard, it's a typo on a product that they are SELLING! Those are expected to be and must be perfect. It's a common sense business practice. Would you buy sneakers that said "Rebok"? Would you be happy if a cake place misspelled your daughter's name on her birthday cake? Didn't think so.
And to echo what purplepackrat said, I am a lawyer, and we recently had to file an entire motion because the paralegal misspelled someone's name in the caption. One tiny letter difference, one tiny mistake, a mistake that is simply unacceptable in my profession and would affect the entire case. So yes, it is a burden to bear, but in business practice it is a necessary burden. |

But it was designed by TC's company based in Utah. Don't manufacturers print the image that is given to them?

This usually happens when a file is saved in the CMYK format.
if the file had been saved at RGB then you get the right colours for the web
CMYK is only good for the print job, not web viewing

I get bugged when I see bad spelling anywhere, but especially on products that have to pass by many sets of eyes before production. I can't remember whose set of stamps I saw at CHA where the word 'cheddar' was spelled 'chedder' and another product which had the word 'sequins' spelled as 'sequence' in bold letters on the front of the package. So sloppy!

I think I must agree that this is another example of what can happen when products are made in a non-English as a first language country. One would think that the mistakes would have been caught when prototypes were examined. I could be wrong, of course . Please don't examine my writing too closely. I can screw up on a regular basis.

That is kind of bad.
However, nothing, and I mean NOTHING beats the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs and a most recent commencement brochure; someone spelled "Public" as "Pubic"...on the front page of the program...in big bold letters...and distributed to everyone in the audience for the ceremony...before the typo was caught...and made an apology via Twitter. Made it all the way to CNN and then some.

Yes you are wrong. The designers design the products and the manufacturers just produce what they are given. It's not China's fault the USA can't spell

Yeah, I think you're wrong. I've never gone through a printer and had them check the spelling and grammar. They always create a prototype and send it back to the client to review and sign off on. Even when I've had horrible/obvious errors, they were my errors to catch, not the printer's.

That is bad. There was a small stamp set sold here at two peas that misspelled beautiful as "beatiful". That was the main image of the set.
I don't think people need to be perfect when typing or writing something informal like on a message board but when I'm spending money on something, I'd want any visible text to be spelled correctly.
I'm sure there are many people who feel that way too so it's good that you have called attention to it so that people don't have to discover it once they have it at home. I usually assume things I buy will have correctly spelled text so I may not look at it that carefully. |

It's sad, but mistakes happen. It's usually not due to ignorance. Graphic designers and artists (myself included) often get tunnel vision and see what we think *should* be there, not what's actually there. Especially after dozens of revisions. Proofreaders are rarely used these days, but it doesn't usually take a professional, just a fresh set of eyes to see things like that.

Yep, it has nothing to do with where it's printed. The company/designer sends print-ready files to the printer and they, well, print them. It is not the printer's job to proofread or make suggestions about colors, fonts, spelling, grammar, etc.
I work with quite a few printers at my job and that's how it works. It's our job to make sure it's formatted and spelled correctly. And, that's why you have multiple proofs. To PROOF the documents.
