I just got my first die-cutting machine, the Sizzix Big Shot. I have a question about using the dies. If I don't cover the whole die with paper, will this damage anything?
For instance, I have a Sizzix Originals flower layers die. If I don't want to cut out all the flower pieces at once, can I just cover the part that I want? Or do I need to cover the whole die? I ran a Nestabilities die upside-down on top of the paper on accident, and the die embedded itself in the cutting pad! Luckily I pried it out. I don't want this to happen with the thick Sizzix die if I don't put paper on it.
Thanks for any help. I have a lot of other questions, but I'll start with that one.

I have a Big Shot too, and I do that with Sizzix dies all the time, like cutting out one shape in the corner but nothing else. I have never had a die stuck to the cutting pad or anything.

For the Sizzix dies it is not necessary to cover the entire die with paper. You will get imprints on the cutting mats but that is normal. As far as the nestie dies, the only time I had them stick is when I am using very thin pattern paper. Bigshot has a lot of pressure from the roller that is why the nestie tend to stick when cutting thin paper.

Like Paperpilekitten, I use little scraps on my dies all the time to just cut out the image/letter that I need. It's a great way to use up little bits of paper. And welcome to 2Peas!
Congratulations Paperpilekitten on your big green 9!

No, you don't have to cover the whole die with paper. Just cover the part you want to cut out.
