It is time to upgrade my primary desktop so I can move my current one to my studio. I will be staying with PC, and would love to hear your recommendations about brands, processors, whatever you have! Most folks I know who are knowledgable about computers are gamers so they can't talk to me about what I need!

Thanks
Alison

I am interested to see what replies you get. I like my XP programs and need a computer upgrade also. I hear so many negative things about Windows 8 and even have people still asking to buy for Windows 7 at work. (we sell computers) What I want to do myself I don't know yet. Cuz my software will faze out and I could have buy new. Sigh! So hopefully you get replies and I can benefit too.

Do you have to buy now? Reason I'm asking... I got a new laptop for Xmas with Windows 8 and I hate it for that reason. Screens closing down on me with no warning and me sitting there scratching my head trying to figure out what I did wrong.
And FWIW, I love my 22" monitor on my desktop. Sometimes, bigger IS better.

I have 23 and 24 inch monitors I work on, and I totally agree one case where size is important! I am just looking now as I am planning out my year long purchases and this is one near the top!

I have been working on XP at my home desktop and have windows 8 on my laptop. There is a windows 7 on DH's laptop and trust me windows 7 is awesome of all the three.

I purchased an ASUS desktop about 3 years ago and am planning on upgrading it to a new tower. I have been completely happy with it and am not really looking at any other brands. ASUS has been making motherboards for other brands for years. It is not snazzy by any means - just a big black box - but it has been great - especially for the price I paid.

I am thinking of this one:

IMHO - I would listen to your gamer friends. Their gaming requirements are just as high, if not higher, than a photographers. Why? Both users need significant amount of video resources to do their job well. The only difference would be the size of the hard drive - photographers need more disk space.

Personally, I like Windows 7 over 8. To me, Win 8 is not truly ready for full prime-time. Yes, there is a learning curve, but I would wait a bit longer. If you purchase is going to be six to nine months out, Microsoft will more than likely release a patch addressing major stability and performance issues being reported today on Windows 8.

Good luck on your new purchase!

A few other thoughts to help with your decision. I was just reading this thread on another forum and thought you could benefit from it as well. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/50553883
I totally agree with Gamers and Photoretouchers both needing similiar systems. I bought a computer last year with the specs I thought were best for a retouching computer but somehow it ended up my sons for gaming. Now I want one a new one for me. I still have XP and he has Windows 7. However, upgrading systems will render alot of my softwarte obsolete. That is something I am not looking forward to ..... rebuying all my software again will be costly for sure. Wish there was a way to run a duel system computer .... XP and Windows 7. Not every software will run in compatibility mode on the Windows 7 system unfortunately. I started to do that before my son took over the other computer. I think that was why I let him have the last new computer. I have CS3 and Lightroom 4 and an earlier version of Painter that I would no longer be able to use when I buy a new computer if Windows 8.

I am going to add that I am staying with windows 7 - but it is soooo much better than XP, I would never never go back to XP.

Right now I am getting the new ASUS and replacing DH's older Dell that runs XP with my old ASUS. But I hate getting new computers and all the setup. ....

Look at som clearance models. I was able to find a lap top with Win 7 on it....I bought one with Win 8 but my internet didnt play nice with it, so i returned it.

I'm looking for a desk top too but not buying or building for at least 3 months because I'm broke right now lol.
