Did you have one growing up?
If you did, what kind did you have?
I had an ugly foam one. The sequins where held in place by straight pins. I used to pull out a pin and stab her almost every night. My father's aunt made it and she like to pretend she was crafty.
My cousins had the beautiful crocheted ones with the huge skirts (Almost bed size). their mother was very crafty.
the other cousin had a mother who could sew and had money, so her bed doll had a beautiful southern style lace dress.

No, I never had one. At first I didn't even understand what you were talking about. I thought you meant a cuddly, nighttime dolly. But now I recall the ones placed on a bed like a decorator pillow. My mother crocheted and could have made a beautiful dress for such a doll but it never happened.

I've never heard of them & can't imagine what they are, but that sounds horrific & what kids nightmares are made of |

I've never heard of them, either... had to google the term myself. (my grandma did crochet, but only afghans.)

I'm pretty sure I had one of those. But mine was a baby surrounded by an attached blanket. My great grandmother made it for me. I remember being really weirded Out by the fact that it had a plastic face but a crocheted body. And also I could pull its face off, flip it over and pop it's eyeballs out. That sounds a lot scarier than it was-I was not afraid of it. But the blanket part was really pretty. I remember spending a lot of time arranging her blanket just so when I'd go to bed. I wish I had a picture of it. |

I have a vague memory of those, and I think my grandmother might have made them...I was a total tom boy though, and didn't play with dolls, so this would not have been on my radar of things to care about. I am going to have to ask my sister, I think she may have had one like Pierkiss that was a baby with a blanket?

A friend of ours got one for a wedding gift in 1989. It was VERY pink and the skirt must have been about a 3' circumference skirt. Our crowd all made lots of fun if it, being the great people that we were.
But the joke was on us. It became the wedding "regift". As each person in our group married, the doll was passed on. DH and I were next to be married, and imagine our surprise when we opened that box. We happily passed it on that fall to another friend.
I'm sure an aunt spent a lot of time making that crocheted wonder, but who gives that in 1989 as a gift to a married adult? |

Did they look like this?
My grandmother had something similar but I think hers sat on a roll of toilet paper in the bathroom .... to disguise the TP. |

I totally forgot about the bed doll I had back in the 60's. My Aunt made one for my seventh birthday. The dress was sewn with pink satin and lots of lace, not crocheted. I never played with her, she was a decorative doll that sat on the bed after it was made. |

Well those would be a fresh hell for some kids I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to sleep with one in my house, never mind in my room!!
But I am very surprised (and OH, so glad) that my crocheting Gram didn't get into those...they look like something she would've liked to create.

I had a great aunt who made us all bed dolls when we were kids. She also made one of those crocheted tp covers as a wedding shower gift. Mine was a clown, in bright colors. Either she didn't know I had a major fear of clowns or she hated me, because there was no way I was using that thing.

thats a pretty one.
bed dolls were like a decorator pillows. some of them sat in front of your pillows, but the very fancy ones sat on top of your pillows with their long skirts covering your pillows.
They were made mostly for little girls, I have never heard of them made for an adult bed.
The dolls varied. I had just a regular 10" fake barbie stuck into foam....oh so very ugly.
My cousins had the doll like in the picture in the above post.
the other cousin had a antique china doll. Hers was very beautiful. not at all creepy.

Yep! That's what our doll looked like. What grown MAN, much less woman, would want that in the bed in 1989? |

Honestly, it is a good day when I take time to thru my comforter across the bed. I can't imagine taking the time to make the bed, arrange the pillows and smooth out the skirt on my bed doll! |

I vaguely remember my great grandma crocheting dresses for dolls similar to that, but they were never on our beds. I think I remember her having one or two in her living room.

I had the type that the skirt had a zipper. And your night clothes were put inside during the day.

I loved my bed doll. My mom made it with a generic plastic doll (you can still get them from the craft stores) and the skirt was a netting. Mom made layers for the skirt, and even crafted a matching hat. She sewed flowers all over it, too.

Gee, thanks all you peas who have never heard of a bed doll - you're making me feel OLD.
I had one as a young child, I think almost every girl did back then (late 50's, early 60's). But I was never a doll kid so I don't think it lasted long. It was a plastic doll similar to the photo, but mine had a lace dress.
Later I got a puppy pajama bag. It was a quite large tan coloured doggy with a zip underneath and you kept your PJ's in it during the day. It lived on the bed and was made from fluffy material, it was nice and soft and cuddly. I liked it much better than the doll and had it for several years. I think by the time I reached my teens, that went by the board too.
My great aunty had bed dolls most of her life, I remeber one always being on her bed. But she loved all that kind of stuff - too kitch for me. |

I remember friends who had them. My sister and I had storybook dolls that we placed on our pillow.
They looked similar to these.

Yeaaaaah... I think I had friends or something who had those... or maybe my great aunt or something... haha. I'm, familiar with those, but don't think I ever had one.
I think I thought they were vaguely intriguing, but for whatever reason, I never had one.
I do find the stabbing thing a little scary though.

Until this thread I never heard of bed dolls. Can you imagine though, today, giving a child a doll full of straight pins to play with? DCFS would have a field day! |

But the doll was never to be touched. thats how they got away with giving a pin loaded object to a toddler.
Th foam thing was a fad where you would put beads and sequins on pins and shove them into a foam shape.
I think this ugly doll is why I hate beads so much.

I didn't realize that was the term. I had cupie bed doll. They were always displayed on a hutch or curio type of place, not on a bed.
I just thought of them as dolls with yarn clothes.

Not to hijack, but thanks for the photo of the Storybook dolls Carol, my mom had a whole collection when she was little and my grandmother kept them in a china hutch, we would wash a re iron the dresses once in a while when we would visit, that was great fun, but I wonder what ever happened to them.
My great grandmother had the bed dolls, with crocheted dresses.
