My first thought was wondering if there ARE any female urologists... though, of course, I know there are. I'm guessing the ratio is about 10:1 male to female, though.
Now, I know women probably have a preference as to whether their OBGYN is male or female... but I think it's close to 50/50 as to which they prefer, for whatever reasons.
On the other hand, I can't imagine there are many males that would CHOOSE a female urologist on purpose. But I could be wrong...
So I'm just curious -- would your husband have a problem with seeing a female urologist?
Yes, it's been a slow morning. |

I am a big believer in going to the BEST doctor that you can -- male or female. I had a male OB for both of my pregnancies. That said, I don't think DH would go to a female urologist if there was a male urologist available that was just as good. |

My dh has gone to urologists of both genders. He prefers the doctor who happens to be female.

Yes, he wouldn't even think twice about it. Many of my friend's husbands go to the same woman. She is a great doctor, and the men feel very comfortable around her.
I prefer female doctors (except the dermatologist, I go to him) because I feel that they may be having the same issues I have and they would understand better. Actually, mostly for fitness tips! What I do to tone up is probably different than what my husband does. Same goes for men with male doctors.
Our husbands are so good about going to doctors! You know how men are! Even a cold warrants a trip to the doctor!!

My DH's urologist is male, but every time he goes, the ultra sound tech that does his ultrasound is a female, so it's hands on with both of them, and one is a woman, so picking a male doctor wouldn't have made much difference!

I don't think he would. Recently his long time PCP retired and he did not like the guy who took over the practice. He asked me to research a new doctor for him and one of his preferences was a male doctor.

It hasn't come up but I don't believe he would have a preference. He has never expressed wanting a male vs. female doctor any time that I've researched new doctors. |

Not my DH. I have to DRAG him to the doctor if I really think he should. He does not like going at all.
As for the OP, I don't think he would have a problem with a female, but would probably prefer a male.

I read an article in the paper about just this topic. One female urologist said she scored her job when she told the interviewing board -- all men -- that she would tell skeptical patients that she has the smallest hands in the office. That makes a difference when you are having a prostate exam.
DH has had male urologists and a female PCP. |

Mine would be more comfortable with a male dr. However, if he had a problem that needed treatment ASAP he would see a woman and be fine with it (maybe a few grumbles and jokes). |

Sure. DH was recently Dx'd with bladder cancer, so he's been thru many procedures already. Although he has a male urologist, there are female radiologists, nurses, etc., many who have done a cath on him. You can't trust a medical professional more than that if you're a man! |

I don't think my DH would be comfortable with that. He's a VERY private guy - never even goes around the house shirtless when it's just the two of us, shirt comes off only in bed or when showering. I can't see him being comfortable being nearly nude in front of anyone other than our family doctor. |

My husband is pretty much the same as schizo's.
It's not that he's private, exactly -- he just likes to keep his business to himself. And by business, I mean ... everything. He cuts his own hair. He doesn't want anyone else to do it.
He has to be BLEEDING FROM THE EYEBALLS to go to the doctor. And it's the same guy he's been seeing for 20 years. Once, we'd been married a couple of years, he took the radiator cap off the engine of a car that was overheated. (It was a weird situation where the engine block was overheating but was also partially frozen -- big sign that we needed to get rid of the car.) Anyway -- the steam burned DH's arm really badly. He refused to go to the ER. He dealt with the pain until the next day, when I told him that he could go to the doctor (his normal doctor) or I was calling 911. He ended up having his arm wrapped from wrist to elbow and all kinds of treatment -- it was a very bad burn.
So ... considering that he won't even get his hair cut by ANYONE of either gender, I'd say it's a big NO on having a female uro. |

My son does.
We didn't choose her because she is a female, we chose her because she's a pediatric urologist who was recommended to us and we liked her when we first went.
DS hasn't had an issue with it but then again most of the doctors he's ever had have been women. we have had some fantastic doctors over the years and the few male doctors he has had have (coincidentally ) been a poor fit to our needs. The one make doctor we had before we moved who was fantastic DS is too young to remember. So his experience has been with fantastic women doctors so when he was sent to a female pediatric urologist it was natural to him. I guess in a year or two that might change who knows.

We have often asserted and we affirm it yet again that no fact in history is better attested than the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It must not be denied by any who are willing to pay the slightest respect to the testimony of their fellow men. My DH went to a female doctor for attention in the genital area. It was the company doctor where he works, and he had a lump in his groin. The doctor was an attractive young woman, long blond hair etc.
So she checks out his lump, then checks his blood pressure.
It was high!
He asked her what did she expect LOL |

I was curious about this, so I looked it up.
In the mid-1980s, there were only 22 female urologists in the nation. The entire country.
The estimate reported is that women make up 20% of all doctors training for urology.
