My skin is typically oily and acne prone but this winter is actually somewhat dry and tight-feeling. I use Cetaphil for oily skin but am looking for something else. I've heard good thing about Purity by Philosophy but is it worth the price? How long would one of the small $10 bottles last? Are there any other favorites that you recommend? Thanks! |

I love Philosophy's Purity Made Simple, but because of the price I switched to Neutrogena's Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser. I've been really happy with it.
I'm not acne prone, but I do have sensitive, combination skin.

I have combination dry-normal skin, leaning more towards normal. I use Origins Checks and Balances facial cleanser.
I use other products from their different lines as well for moisturizer, serum, and eye cream; yeah, I'm that one that goes all out on the face stuff.
I've never had a problem with any of their products, and for a department store/designer skin care company their prices are, in my opinion, reasonable.
You should check them out. They'll hook you up with samples that will get you through a week of using the products to see if you like them before jumping in!

I have normal leaning toward oily skin except in the winter, when I get dry areas. I really love the Philosophy Purity, and one of the $10 bottles lasts easily a few weeks if you're careful about how much you use. I also like Biore Steam Activated Cleanser , which is more reasonably priced. |

it works better than the expensive cleansers I have |

On that note does anyone have a more affordable recommendation to replicate Philosophy's Hope in a Jar? |

The face wash from Trader Joe's. it was designed by a Beverly Hills Dermatologist. He sold it to celebrities for $90 or something crazy. He was approached by Trader Joe's to mass market it. It sells at Trader Joe's for $5.99 and it's amazing! |

I rotate between Philosophy's Purity Made Simple and Microexfoliating Wash. They are a little pricey but for as long as they last I noticed that I actually spend less money in the long run on facial wash if that helps. A bottle goes a long way.

CeraVe foaming face wash - I can get it at my grocery store, Walgreens, and drugstore.com. I have somewhat oily, acne-prone, sensitive skin. Tons of people on makeupalley love the CeraVe products, although there are some who don't, of course. |

I too use Philosophy. It lasts me forever. A big jar, which is around $22, will easily last me 6+ months. The smaller $12ish bottle easily 3-4 months. It really has worked wonders on my skin. I'm not easily sold on a product, but it has done wonders. Previously I had used the Checks and Balance by Origins but found it dried me out too much. I also use the Clinque line and that was just a big fail.

I prefer to use a separate makeup remover, or baby shampoo, to take off my makeup before I wash my face. But that's just me. There are face washes out there that double as makeup removers but I don't know one off the top of my head.

I always remove as much makeup as possible before washing my face. When I use my facial wash I want it to actually clean my skin, not just remove my makeup. I have acne prone skin so I want to make sure I get my face as clean as possible to control my breakouts.

I also have combination skin that tends to get dry in the winter. I swore by purity by philosophy. I tried oil of Olay foaming cleanser for sensitive skin and it works just as well. We're cutting back and for right now couldn't justify the expense. |

My skincare routines involves cleanser, toner, moisturizer. I have both the Philosophy cleanser and Origins Checks and Balances. The Origins works WAY better. When using the Philosophy one, I always see remaining dirt/makeup on the cottonball when using the toner. I don't have that problem with the Origins.
I think it's around $18-20 and it lasts between 6-9 months.

I've been using purity made simple but I must be doing something wrong because I don't find it to last a long time at all. I bought the $20 bottle on New Year's Day and its about half gone. I only use it once a day, with my clarisonic. I figured that was typical because the instructions say to use a liberal amount- any less and I just don't feel it's doing the job.
I do like it with the clarisonic though- doesn't dry my skin out and I haven't had as many acne issues since using it. I'd like to find something comparable in a lower price range. |

I'm a lifelong Clinique clarifying lotion (toner) user + other random drug store cleansers who's switching. I needed a new toner, so after reading up on it, I just switched to Neutrogena like 3 days ago. So far so good. I may just switch to all Neutrogena products. I'm only using it once a day (in the morning) so far.
My skin feels and looks so nice already. I just hope it doesn't make me break out. Usually, new brands work for a few days, then my skin goes nuts. The Neutrogena seems pretty mellow though. We'll see.
I'm using various drug store brand cleansers at the moment. I like Clean 'n Clear, but I swap out for Clearsil exfoliating scrub if I need something more.

I need my cleanser to remove makeup, even eye makeup. I used to use Olay fresh foaming face wash and liked it but my skin was oily in the summer so I bought the cetaphil for oily skin. Maybe I should go back? Or look into the neutrogena extra gentle. I have some of the Target brand knock off of original Cetapaphil and used that tonight. It seems like it leaves a residue on my eyes, though.
I got some samples of other philosophy products at Sephora the other day and like them as well. Wish they weren't so expensive! |

The neutrogena fresh foaming cleanser is ok to use on your eyes, but seemed harsher than the Olay to me. I used to switch off and on between the two. It is a good cleanser. |

Please, no matter what skin type you have, please check out L'BRI - they give me my own website where you can check out not only the company and their products which are aloe-based and contain NO water, harsh chemicals, fragrances, or coloring. They are gentle enough for babies yet effective and anti-aging. Even if you choose something else, you can educate your self and make an informed decision. www.laurasells.lbri.com The bottles of cleanser, freshener, and moisturizer last at least 4-5 months. They take off make-up.
If you keep switching brands or use a hodge podge approach, your skin keeps trying to adjust and doesn't know what to do. Initially, you may have a few breakouts but it's your skin riding itself of toxins. I urge you to get out what you use and look at the ingredient list (many companies put the ingredients on the box so you throw it away and can't find it later, but you can google it). I am guessing water is one of the first four ingredients and you can't pronounce most of the other ones, let alone know what they are or why they are there (because they are cheap to add). Baby shampoo is great for taking off make-up because it doesn't sting your eyes....but that's because it contains a numbing chemical so kids don't cry, and lots of times formalghyde.

I've used Philosophy Purity for years. I've run out, tried something cheaper but I've always come back to Purity.
It cleans my skin (I'm 52), doesn't dry it out and it feels incredible when it's dry. Other products left it feeling either too dry or not clean enough.
LeoGirl76-Wow! That's so cool about the Trader's Joe's Face Wash. I'm going to have to try that the next time I run out of Purity.
CreativeGirl-Personally I think the reason the instructions say to use a liberal amount is because the company wants you to use a lot so you'll have to buy more. I don't have a Clarisonic so I don't know about that, but when I use Purity with my hands to wash my face it just takes a tiny amount.

That's the one! I use it with a washcloth, and when I wash towels, just give them an extra rinse to make sure that all of the make-up comes off of the washcloths.

I use the one by Kiehl's. I have very sensitive eyes and this is very gentle and it gets off everything completely. I'm not sure I like the application though. I think I would prefer something more liquid-y. This is more of a lotion, so you have to kind of spread it around with your fingers first before you wipe off with a cottonball. I've heard that the L'oreal one is good, but I haven't tried that.
