I'm thinking about joining a gym..... once again that I used to belong to but I quit because I thought it was too far. It's 9 miles away and I think I was just using that just as an excuse. I liked it, it was clean, equipment was in good shape, great price, no long term commitment, but I slacked off going. So how far would you drive to a gym?

Ten miles. I live in a very small town and the nearest gym is in another town. It takes me 12-15 minutes to drive there.

My gym is 7 miles away. It's a community center and I love it. I could go to two others that are 2.5 and 3.5 miles away from me, but they are just those strip mall type places. I love my community center because it's for the entire family. Swimming, basketball, track, weights, cardio, classes, etc. Love it. |

3 blocks for the one close to work. |

Mine is under 2 miles. It takes about 5 minutes. Location was one of the most important factors for me.

Hate going to the gym No gym was ever close enough. (Except in college, when I lived on campus). Now, my gym is in my basement. In the long run, I've actually saved money just buying the exercise equipment rather than paying monthly membership fees...and saved so much time not having to get dressed, pack stuff, drive, etc. |

My gym is about a 1/2 mile. I walk or run there sometimes.
Close does matter to me in the Minnesota winters. |

25 minutes. My friend and I picked a gym that was equidistant for both of us. |

I get my butt up at 4:30 every week day to drive the 7 miles to the closest YMCA. Usually 6:30 am on weekends. It's close enough that I don't get ready there, I come back home to get ready for work. |

6 miles for the Y and 5 miles for boot camp. Boot camp is new. I'm going to have to choose one or the other soon. If I go with boot camp, I'll start shopping for a treadmill for when the weather is too rough.
There are 3 closer gyms, but we chose the Y further away because it was a better fit. |

I just quit our gym last week. It was 20 miles away, but less than a mile away from DS's preschool.
I would have kept going, but the childcare wouldn't keep my baby when he was crying. So they'd come get me on the treadmill at 10 minutes in.
So we bought a treadmill and quit the gym. I've seriously gotten more solid workouts in my basement in the past week than I have in the past 6 months at the gym. It has paid for itself in my sanity.

We have a home gym. So since our hallway is 44 ft long, it's probably a 35 ft walk.
When I was a member of a regular gym the location was key. It was 1.5 miles from home AND on my way to and from work. No excuses.

One that is a 5 min drive and another that is an 18 minute drive. I definitely go to the closer gym more often (4x week for closer gym vs 2x week for the farther.)

Five minutes by car. I could walk, but we live at the top of a hill. I guess I could quit the gym and just walk there and back.
For me, the farther away the gym is, the harder it is to get there. |

My gym is .6 miles down the street from me. When I go on the weekends, I walk. During the week I drive because I go late at night. I usually don't get home until about 11 pm. I feel safer driving when it's that late. |

One mile (5 minutes),
Three miles (10-15 minutes), and
Six miles (20-25 minutes).

5 minutes by car from ours. It's pretty new so we are very fortunate (the old one was yuck and did not attract many people!) I have to have as few excuses to not go as possible so distance is definitely a factor!

There are lots of options close to me. I have a choice of about four full gyms and several little boot camp type places, but I've always been a Y girl. It's about an 8 minutes drive. I also go regularly to a college facility even closer to run on their outdoor track. |

The closest gym to my house is in a neighboring town about ten minutes from my house. If I worked in that town I would consider getting a membership there. I decided that when I factor in the drive time and waiting around for the class to start that I could easily do a DVD at home for much cheaper in less time. Over the past few years I have put together a large collection of DVDs so I can really mix it up. I have weights, a step bench, bands, weighted gloves, etc. I run in the warmer months. It works for me and I feel like I've gotten in shape pretty cheap. |

We have a membership to the Y and it's about 10-15 minutes from our house. Actually, we have 2 that are about the same. One is about 5 minutes further. Which one we go to depends on the day of the week because their busy-ness levels vary (and one doesn't open until 1pm on Sundays).

The closest gym in our area is about 10 miles away. The much nicer one (that I used to have a membership to) is about 12 miles away. DH and saw how much money we were spending on our gym membership in a year, plus the gas to get there and back, and bought a treadmill, free weights, a pull up bar and elastic bands, and a home gym. They live in our basement, so, right down the stairs. Later this year, we're thinking of adding a spin bike to the mix.
That said, for my weekend long runs, I will drive up to 30 miles away to run, depending on how far I am going, if I want to work hills, or if I just need a change of scenery.

It's less then a mile away. We might be switching gyms this fall because there is a new gym being built. It will be about 2 miles away.
I prefer going to the gym. There are to many distractions at home for me. |

About 10 miles/15 minutes away. I used to go to one that was closer (Powerhouse), but it was disgusting & dirty! They made everyone use the same towel to wipe of the gym equipment, so basically you were spreading germs from one machine to another....EWWW!!! So I went back & rejoined the gym we started going to back in 2008....it's bigger, offers more classes, has 2 pools (indoor & outdoor) plus it's CLEAN! |
