I often wonder if anyone over the age of 30 ever buys a home or has a remodel.... I never see anyone middle-aged or older on these shows.

I don't see it as age discrimination so much as lack of realistic vision. Some of these kids want what their parents now have...and don't realize the homes/apartments they started with.
If I hear one more person buying their first home say they are looking for their dream home, I might just slap them. It is ridiculous! Who gets their dream home right off the bat!? |

old laminate countertops...linoleum on the floors
shag carpet and in desperate need of paint
but they can see past all of that because it's theirs and they
can start their own lives
something like most of us can remember

I get wanting them. But acting like you just can't possibly live in a house without them is what bugs me. Especially when you are looking for your "starter" home. Granite countertops are expensive, and most low end starter homes are not going to have them. | |

Watching these first time buyers is frustrating. Mom & Dad have worked for 30 years to get the place they are. Yet, these young couples want everything right now.
Open concept and a good place to entertain grate on my nerves. As does the female asking the male where he is going to put his clothes.
Some of the things that are desired make me shake my head. All I can think is once you are in that house, have to pay the utility bills, and find out how workable the 'desired' features are, there are going to be regrets. I mostly notice it in kitchens. |

We MUST have four bedrooms... (no kids) one office for me, one for hubby and one for ALL the entertaining we do for our out of town guests.... Give me a break. OH and and what is that across the street? Are they building another home? We can't even fathom living next door to that!! |

DH and I are in our 30s and haven't bought a house yet. We lived in military housing for 11 years and have rented two separate apartments for a year each and are currently in a one year lease for a condo. I think we'll rent another year or two to make absolutely sure we are staying in this area and then buy a place.
That being said, our current place has granite counters and I really don't like them. I'm extremely OCD and if every millimeter of them is not shining like brand new, it aggravates me. Same for the stainless steel appliances, I would rather have black. DH and I have two sinks in the master bath and we still only use one, so I'd rather have one sink and more counter space.
We do have the washer and dryer upstairs where the bedrooms are and I do like that, but it's not a MUST. We've lived in many places where the washer and dryer were not only downstairs, but on the other end of the house. We managed. Ideally, we would buy a one story house, so it wouldn't matter what our preference is anyway.
We have an open concept place now and we really don't like it. While sitting in the living room watching TV, you can hear someone typing away on the computer in the loft area. Or while trying to watch TV in the living room, the sounds of cooking in the kitchen drown the TV out. I don't like having to go in my bedroom with the door closed to have a telephone conversation.
DH has some pretty intense back problems, so DIYing a lot of big projects wouldn't be possible for us and hiring out is really expensive. So we would look for a house that had a good layout and didn't need too much big work done. Carpeting, paint, etc is pretty easy to change out. Moving walls, etc would be out for us. |

They drive me crazy! They want lots of space, "gourmet" kitchen, granite, hardwood all over for a less than their $150,000 budget!
Did you all see the one a few weeks ago where the couple bought a house in VA? The woman had a day care in the house. They went $140,000 over budget because she wouldn't compromise? My husband would never let me walk all over him like that (and vice versa). My kids and I did not like that woman at all! | |

I think it's the same with cars and kids now. My first car was a 1966 Hillman Hunter. OK, it was 1985 so the car was *only* 19 years old, but still, it was a dorky car! All of my friends had dorky old grandma cars for their first cars. These days a lot of kids are driving around in new or almost new cars. I'm sure my DD would never dream of driving a 20 year old car when she's old enough to drive! Not sure how she's going to afford anything else though LOL! | |

i shared a 1984 dodge colt with my mother....standard..four doors..shit brown
and my first home was a dump!
and i loved that place....cos it was ours...and we could do whatever we wanted!

Love this thread! I think even funnier are the ones where the couple won't even get out of the car because the way the house looks.
Give me a break....... I'm sure these shows are staged but it's pretty hard to watch sometimes.
We started off in a studio apartment... it was gross but it was still fun.

My husband and I bought our fixer upper as newlyweds two years ago. We were both in our early 20s and we have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into our home. It was built in the early 60's and was being sold by the original owners children so it needed a lot of updating. We are still working on getting it to the way we want it to look.
Most of my married friends have done the same thing. This seems to be a tv only phenomenon. | |

The wife was a complete bitch. Insisted on three bedrooms because their boys (around ages 7&9) could not share a room.

I believe the shows on HGTV, like all other reality shows, are scripted. Given it's a formulaic show, only the (often exaggerated & ridiculous) personalities & locations of the hunters distinguish each episode from the previous one. | |

Two days ago I saw a new twist, or at least new to me. It was HH Renovations. It was an awesome couple who bought an house in need of a lot of work. They did most of it by themselves, and had terrific vision for what they were after.
I had given up on the regular HH show as it was getting irritating. This was a great twist! |

It's totally fake. Half the time they have already bought the house, and the houses they are looking at are not even for sale.

What I don't get is all the "this needs updating, we'll need to replace" when they are talking about bathroom fixtures and other minor (and sometimes major like the kitchen) stuff.
Does this mean that every 5 years, they are going to be updating the house once it is theirs?? They act like it is unacceptable to have anything that is more than 5 years old. I doubt home owners do updating more than every 10 to 15 years or more. We haven't been in our home that long yet but the house is 20 years old now and there are still a lot of original items. I'd love to replace most but there are other things in life that demand our money more. | |

The show is totally fake. You cannot even be on the show unless you have already bought a house. Also many of the homes that they look at are not even on the market, they belong to friends and family of the homebuyer. Knowing that, I lost interest in watching it. But it is fun to try to guess which house they will select.
Property Brothers is another that I find ridiculous. We're currently remodeling and it is nothing like it is on HGTV! | |

And they ended up with the 2 bedroom that had the teeny tiny room that could be a 3rd bedroom...Put bunkbeds in that room and that's were both boys are!
On a side note about the car thing with teens...I think a lot of that can be blamed on the parents. If parents are buying their kids brand new or almost new cars what else would they expect.
My parents got me my first car in '98 and it was a '92 Pontiac Sunbird. It wasn't something 20 years old but wasn't brand new either. They wanted me to have something reliable, but it was nothing fancy!
My 18 year old cousin on the other hand just got her 1st car....a brand new loaded Honda Civic that my aunt and uncle paid for... |

Same here! I'd love to have found a decent contractor who would work for those prices - and that quickly!
The only thing that keeps me tuning in on occasion is that I love to look at other houses for inspiration and fun. I have gotten to where I DVR the shows and the fast forward through the garbage just to see the homes.
I just wish that HGTV could figure out how to have some variety of shows. It seems that they get a show that's a hit, then within a few months, ALL the shows are similar to the hit show. Sure would be nice to have a few buying/selling shows, some that remodel, some for just decorating the home you already have. Apparently the powers that be over at HGTV haven't figured out how to "multi task" the types of shows they have. |

Meg, Hillman Hunter cars aren't available in the US so I had never heard of that car until you mentioned it.
My husband & I would throw the House Hunters people for a loop if we looked for a house. We hate open plan & prefer wood laminate over hardwood. We always joke that we're going to have to put up walls in a house one day because open plan is so popular now, lol.

Same here. I can watch House Hunters and Love it or List it in 10 minutes (and LIOLI is a 1 hour show).

It is nice to want all those things isn't it. hahaha I will admit, my first home (still here) is 1732 sqft, 3 bedrooms with optional 4th, huge master closet and great yard. It is also an open floor plan. Best thing ever...it was 120,000. Gotta love prices in Texas!
Now for all the things the people want on HH.....we are getting ready to build again, and it is drastically different. We want a much larger house, after living here, we know what we want in a house. We are also planning on the future. While we would love a two story, I have bad knees....no two story. I think everyone should start small. It may work better for you instead of a larger one. My mom is happy in her smaller house, after having a large one. But unlike us, she has no desire to have family stay over, she doesn't need extra room. We want family here and have them over often.
As for cars, it does seem crazy how new the cars are that kids are driving now. My first car was awesome! Yes it was a fancy one, but it was 18 years old! I found a 7351i BMW for only 2500 dollars. It was a steal. I loved it. |

The divas who walk in and immediately announce this would be a total gut job are simply amazing. There was one in Scottsdale who insisted she couldn't possibly live with the toilets...I kept thinking she'd never make a world traveler if those perfectly nice toilets were unacceptable.
I am going to be thrilled when finally granite and stainless steel are considered retro. I remember when red accent walls were a must have not all that long ago.

I loved my kitchen when we built out home over 25 yrs. ago. I do now want new counter tops. My formica cabinet tops don't even look worn! Oh did I forget to mention they are dusty rose I still like them but what was I thinking. Most men called it pink but admitted they liked it. I did change wallpaper when I still liked what I had. Big mistake. I don't over clean my house, (that's my story and I'm sticking to it)so nothing wears out! I had stainless appliances. Hated them after a couple years and replaced with white which I still like best. Easier to clean. Everybody's taste changes after a while. In my opinion the money for a home needs to be in the foundation and build. Don't pay on $1000 faucets for 20 years. Upgrade as you can with cash. That's my opinion now would somebody tell me where to get cash! | |

The divas who walk in and immediately announce this would be a total gut job are simply amazing.
Yeah, and it's not just saying that it's a "total gut", it's saying things like "we will have to completely gut this kitchen/bathroom, etc. IMMEDIATELY" because they "can't live with that kitchen/batghroom, etc." Really?? You like the house, the price, the neighborhood, but you can't live with those kitchen cupboards for even a little while?
I agree that there is some kind of sense of entitlement and a complete lack of patience that drives me crazy. Move in, see how things go and start gradually remodeling, replacing, etc. what you don't like. Why does your house have to look perfect immediately in order for you to be able to enjoy it? | |

I just love the ones where their main concern is whether the yard is big enough for the dogs. Because no chihuahua is happy with less than half an acre to frolic in.
I once saw a HH episode where pretty much every room of every house, the wife made some comment about whether or not the view from the windows was acceptable to the cat. One was a condo, and a window looked out onto the side of a building, and she actually said something like, "Oh, that view will never do for the cat!" LOL Cracked me up. | |

We are the opposite so I guess we'd never be invited on the show! Homes in Connecticut ARE expensive so if we got everything we wanted right away we'd be looking at $600,000+ easy. And we don't even have very high taste.
We are looking to move this fall and buy a home but the only requirements we have is room. We'd like something that's fairly large. We don't mind having to paint and put down new floors ourselves. I find that fun, DIY projects that hubby and I do together. I'd rather have good size rooms and a home with good "bones"! |
