Garden Girls: Tara Whitney talks about the End of Summer

I for one am not totally thrilled that summer is rolling to a slow steady stop. Usually by August I have had it with my house being full of people all day. Had it with entertaining the leagues and nations of children I have to entertain. Had it with the heat. And the extreme electric bill. But this summer has been good. And nice. And they haven't fought too much or been too bratty. And we have had fun. And we have bonded and laughed and played.

Now, we only have a few weeks left of freedom. Vacations are over. I have to start thinking about waking them up at 6:30 am again. Ants are taking over my kitchen, as they do every year at this time...trying to escape the heat just like everyone else.

And just like with the end of anything, I feel a little bit deflated. A little bit like I don't want to let the ease of summer go. A little bit sad that this year Nathan will be going to first grade. And Anna her first year of pre-school. Drew and Mckenna will be in FOURTH! A little bit freaked out that before I know it, Christmas will be here, and the end of another year altogether.

The best thing for me to do right now is to get prepared for the year ahead. (Thank goodness for the PTA sponsored "order your supplies at the end of this school-year so you don't have to rush out and get them the day before school starts next year and we will even pack them all together for you fundraiser") I saved the clothes shopping though. No problem doing that! Old Navy and Sports Chalet, here. we. come.

It is also important for me to hold onto the fun that we had. Look through the pictures I took. Write down the memories before I forget them completely. Savor the vacations, the relaxation of having nothing we had to do. Maybe I'll put a photo I took of us in Mexico above my kitchen sink so that I can look at it every morning as we rush out the door to school.

Two years ago, I did this layout (insert layout-summer 2004) to encapture our entire summer in one fell swoop. I like the idea of layouts like this. All in one, get em done layouts. Small photos of a lot of different things. List or bullet type journaling.

I think I might go do another just like it today. About this summer. And maybe you should too.

Bring on the 7:45am carpool. :)

Garden Girls: Back To School Tags!
It is back-to-school time! I decided to make a set of tags that can be to a child as they head out to school. Just stick one in their backpack or lunchbag to let them know you are thinking of them.

  1. Start with any of the 7Gypsies tags. They are perfect for any occasion and make the process quick and easy.
  2. Add photos if desired.
  3. Add your words. I did a mix of handwriting and KI Memories rub-ons.
  4. Add some of Rhonna's fabulous rub-ons.
  5. Finish off with SEI puffy epoxies.
  6. Mat and add ribbon.

Something that I have seen become super popular with embellishments lately is CHIPBOARD! They are everywhere! They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. I love that you can alter them on your own or that you can purchase things that will help alter them for you like this and this. And who could forget the scrapbooker's necessity?! The ALPHABET! They even come in a digital kit! I love the extra texture and depth they give. They are like diecuts--- but sturdier! Stock up on these trendy embellishments and see what you come up with! You can use them as is or paint, decopauge, add jewels, ink them, use brads to adhere, add ribbon... the possibilites are endless!
Garden Girls: Trend Watch by Tracy Miller
In the past couple of years, many scrapbook companies have been offering ever more sophisticated product lines. But I've noticed recently a lot of products that seem to embrace a whimsical cuteness. Of course, I'm not the first to notice this trend. Ali Edwards showed a number of "cute and cool" products in her "Studio A" column a couple of months ago. And I think the doodling trend that we see so often right now, feeds into this as well.

Of course, for many people, "cute" never left. Many companies have had success providing supplies for people who felt that pages about their kids should reflect the innocence of childhood. It's fun now to see those type of supplies done by different companies, sometimes with a little twist that adds a touch of sophistication. It's a great mix.

Some current product examples that come to mind are the Basic Grey frog paper , SEI's new Doodley-doo lines, and Rhonna Farrer's Scribbles line for boys. One that I'm particularly loving lately is Sassafras Lass. I did a layout with Sassafras Lass paper and Tia Bennet's 2Seas Digital Kit .
