Another interview post! This time with the fabulous April Foster of Studio Calico...
- Describe your newest collection.
Our newest collection, Elementary, is a full release of paper, label stickers, journaling cards, fabRips, rub-ons, and sticker alphabets. Elementary is our take on back-to-school, but it includes lots of simple patterns perfect for scrapping the everyday as well. Look for academic ledgers, warm tones, and a raise in your creative IQ. We’ve also added some brand new products to the mix this time, so be on the lookout for those!
- What was the inspiration behind your new release?
School is just around the corner and we wanted a collection that was perfect for scrapbooking school photos, for kids of all ages, plus have some nice warm tones that would be nice for fall. Finding a nice vintage ruler at a flea market as well as report cards and a primer were just the icing on the cake.
- What do you love about this collection - what is your favorite part?
My favorite part of the new collection is the color scheme. For me, it’s so important to nail that. We spend a lot of time deciding and conferencing over color choices because I want the line to be useable for boy or girl, old or young, and appear timeless.
- What is a typical day like designing at Studio Calico?
Designing at Studio Calico is definitely a group effort, led by Stephen Ogden, who actually doesn’t work at the office at all. When we’re ready to discuss a line, we first begin with a theme, although I hesitate to say “theme” because all our papers have patterns that are not thematic at all. Then, we decide the colors, which is usually a narrowing down process. After that, I might send vintage imagery Stephen’s way or some loose ideas for paper: such as “something with numbers” but from there it’s all him. Stephen has as close to 100% creative freedom as any designer I know, but he’s certainly earned it. I think Stephen has a great job!

Many of you know Lucy. She's the sweet & giant dog who likes to wander around the warehouse during our warehouse videos, or sometimes just sit pretty in the background.
You've seen how big she is...well, we have a stack of giveaways for next week's social from our sponsors even bigger!
(the pile keeps growing, by the way, we've gotten even more boxes since this photo was taken this morning!)

Stay tuned here on my blog for more news on the CHA Summer Online Social next week! The party begins Tuesday...
