From Start to Finish: Going Places

This week's layout features the Design Principle of Repetition as part of Two Peas in a Bucket's Design School Series.

I used repeating cloud elements (patterned paper, cloud stamps and cloud punches) throughout my layout. Not only does repetition give a pleasing design but it creates a cohesive finished design.

CHALLENGE: Use the design principle of Repetition on your next layout.
*Challenge runs from August 31, 2011 - Sept. 7, 2011*

From Start to Finish: Top Ten List

From Start to Finish: Top 10 List

This week's layout features the Design Principle of Continuity/Unity achieved throughout the layout by the repetition of borders, starting with the title at the top, punched border, border of tags/embellishments, photo border and ending with the paper border along the bottom. I also used the same line of My Little Shoebox paper to keep the continuity flowing.

In the video I also explain in further detail how I line up computer generated journaling.

From Start to Finish Video: This is What Life is All About

For this week's layout I combined a bunch of papers and embellishments from the new MME Blush Collection to create my layout. One of my favorite things about the papers in the new MME collections is the pre-printed labels right on the papers. For my layout, I made sure to cut the glitter dot paper with the text label so that I could use it as an embellishment on my page.

Lot of patterned paper layers add to the look of the design. Sewn on buttons, a die cut pre-made banner and stickers complete the page.

Welcoming Kimber McGray to the Garden Girl team!

my name: Kimber McGray. Yes, it's Kimber and not Kimberly or Kim. Actually my middle name is Lee. My parents sure are funny ones.

favorite cardmaking & stamping techniques: I like to keep things simple. I can't put down my scallop border punch and corner rounder though.

music: My favorite band is the Barenaked Ladies. Great music, good looking and funny as HECK!

work space: I just recently moved my "office" from the basement to the main level. I now actually have a door and 2 nice big tables to work on. Pure heaven!

style: I'd say my style is fairly clean and simple.

1 or 2 pages: 12x12, 1 pagers. I do dabble in 2 pagers and 8.5x11 too. It's fun to mix it up. Most of my cards are standard A2 sized though.

color preference: Bright! I love yellow!!

favorite product type: Kraft. Kraft. Kraft.

childhood ambition: I wanted to be a veterinarian until my junior year in high school. I ended up with a degree in Marketing.

fondest memory: Most of my fondest memories seem to go back to camping. Both as a kid and as an adult. I just loved being outdoors and away from all responsibilities. I just took my kids camping for their 1st time. We will be doing it again very soon!

soundtrack: Any movie from the late 80's. Loved the music in those movies.

retreat: Anywhere with my friends to craft and just relax. An ideal place would include being on a lake so we could go outside and just sit and look at the water with a glass of wine when we needed a break from crafting!

proudest moment: ha! I just figured out how to configure typepad in a new way. I am pretty darn proud of that!

biggest challenge: Balancing it all. Freelance work, design work, kids school, kids sports, husband, house, etc. It gets hard some days.

alarm clock: 6:30 am. Most days I don't even need the alarm to go off.

perfect day: Over the last 2 years my favorite days have been while we are on vacation at Hilton Head Island. Ahhh... hitting the pool in the morning, the beach in the afternoon and then out for a casual dinner and venturing around the island. Those are perfect days.

first job: I worked at a small, independent pharmacy after school and on the weekends. Running the cash register and stocking shelves.

indulgence: Graeter's Ice Cream. YUM!

last purchase: New cardigans from Old Navy. I'm hoping that it will start to cool down now that school has started here.

favorite movie: Vacation! My husband is so sick and tired of that movie but I get giddy every time I hear the music that opens the movie.

inspiration: Right now: Pinterest. WOW. So many amazing ideas all in one place.

my life: is pretty good! My family is very supportive of my playing with paper. I'm amazed at what I've accomplished over the last 6 years since I first was given some paper from a friend.

style: homespun and simple.

1 or 2 pages: usually 1

childhood ambition: I was a huge tomboy and always wanted to do really masculine things when I was young. That has changed dramatically : )

fondest memory: The time I spent on my grandparents’ farm.

retreat: I know it sounds cliche, but my home is definitely my retreat. Especially my backyard.

wildest dream: I think I'm living it.

biggest challenge: Finding time to do all the things I want to do

Finally Friday Video & Card: Thinking of You (Misting card)

Finally Friday: Thinking of You (Misting card)

I'm currently obsessed with Mister Huey mists from Studio Calico. They're just so awesome! I've made a few cards using mists recently and though I'm still learning, I wanted to include a misted card for this week's Finally Friday because mist is a great tool to use on single-layer cards. :)

I used punched butterfly shapes to mask butterflies in the misting. Super easy, but impactful. :)

CHALLENGE
Create a single-layer card using no dimensional adhesive. Upload your card to the TwoPeas gallery and select this week's Finally Friday challenge.

SUPPLIES
Solid Card Stock: Crumb Cake (Stampin' Up!)
Spray Ink: Mister Huey Mist in Pony (Studio Calico)
Punches: Classic Butterfly All Over Punch and 3-in-1 Butterflies punch (Martha Stewart Crafts)
Letter Stickers: Oxford Alphas (BasicGrey
White Pen: Gelly Roll White (Sakura); Signo Broad (Uni-Ball

From Start to Finish: Every Minute

From Start to Finish: Every Minute

This week's layout began centered around the adorable MME Lime Twist Journaling Tag. I loved the number list style journaling and it made the perfect canvas to add tidbits about my youngest son at 7 months old. A large photo to showcase the milestone and 3 small 2x2 supporting photos along with bright colorful patterned papers and die cuts give a fun feel to the page.

CHALLENGE: Center your next layout around a fun journaling element.
*This week's challenge runs from August 10, 2011 - August 17, 2011*

Finally Friday Video & Card: Leftovers Challenge

Hi all! The inspiration behind this week's card started when I started cleaning off my crafting area. I was about to throw away a bunch of scraps when they caught my eye. I decided to save them from the trash can, and instead challenged myself to use them on a card. :)

In this case, I made two cards. The smaller one is itty bitty so it became a card for on top of a gift.

Create a card using "leftovers". Upload your creation to the TwoPeas gallery and select this week's Finally Friday challenge.

From Start to Finish: Reptile Gardens

Happy Wednesday Scrapping Friends!
This week I wanted to continue with my vacation themed pages from my family's recent summer travels and also touch on the stamping technique from this month's Scrapbook Stamping Class (Resist Stamping). The August class can be found here.

I managed to fit 20 photos on this 2-page spread.

I went with bright and colorful patterned papers to match the mood and feel of the birds and flowers in the photos.

I used "flower" or the journaling die cuts that coordinate with the My Little Shoebox collections and layered them for the florals on my page. To create the coordinating leaves, I first die cut the Hero Arts leaves that coordinate with the stamps from smooth white cardstock (the digital die cut designs can be purchased directly from the Hero Arts Online Store). Next I stamped the leaves with Versamark and heat set each with white embossing powder. Then, using the resist technique I sprayed the leaves with Studio Calico mists to add color. The embossed parts of the image "resist" the ink. Instant colorful leaves!

I also die cut the word "gardens" from white cardstock using a font in my Silhouette software. I then added color to the die cut with spray ink and let it dry before adhering to my layout.

The word "reptile" in the title was die cut using Stampin' Up alpha steel rule dies for the Sizzix Big Shot. I sprayed these with white ink to slightly dull the letters.

For the journaling I replaced some of the words with stamped words from the June Studio AE Stamp Set. I have gotten my mileage from this stamp set. So great for any travel-themed or vacation-themed layout!
