Shape Up Your Scrapbooking: Speech Bubbles

Screen Shot 2013-03-26 at 10.37.19 AM
We've been talking about shapes all month; today's topic is an especially fun one - speech bubbles! Here's a look at how we're seeing speech bubbles show up in our scrapbook pages:

Projects-d39d24cf-2236-4e3b-8a56-e19c2598161b-29ae807e244c4e1c912d1011c6fa6d35

Mlepea records a conversation that happened the same week she created her page "Thoughts On." The white bubbles pop against a bold red woodgrain.

Projects-0fcf98e5-822e-4112-8222-9f83bfcffa9c-4e77d74b81c04385ab87564968646f5f

Lisa Truesdell tells the story of her 5 year old chatty son while working with the Twine + Ink vellum die cuts. She embellishes each one with a different mix of goodies.  See the video tutorial on how this page came together here.

Screen Shot 2013-03-26 at 10.42.05 AM

Jill Sprott journals from her pet's perspective on her layout "There's the Rub."  She's hand-cut a piece of Amy Tangerine paper and ran the speech bubbles through her printer.

Projects-fff10465-6bd5-4105-96df-8d80e0edce8f-cc86948fd0874ea580b1b9d62b1974be

Jrench fills a large section of her background with speech bubbles.  On a second piece of paper she's printed her journaling on the shapes, and then cut them out and realigned them onto the original.

Projects-3c0ca50c-101d-4ba6-a12d-201c3b1f0102-4bc9a2f9824f4a259c8f200bb1100805

Chantalle Mcdaniel records her daughter's voice quite literally on her page "Say What?!" She's filled speech bubbles with the pronunciation of her daughter's vocabulary and then hid a voice recorder behind her photo.

There are many ways to incorporate speech bubbles on our projects - fussy cut them, stamp them, use premade die cuts or stickers.  Many of them are perfect for card sentiments too!  Here are a few of our favorite speech bubbles; shop our entire selection here.

Shape Up Your Scrapbooking: Hexagons

C5ebcb8f546e85f3bd4dca7f598b84cb

Source

We've looked at triangles, arrows, geotags and pie charts so far this month.  Next it's hexagons!  Here's a look at how the Peas have been scrapping with this shape:

Projects-bbd486ca-f968-4ebf-9b87-76b03eeef6df-cf5e4a5a58fd4134abfd2331c38105bb

Small hexagons break away from die-cut patterns cut into long vertical blocks on this page by voneall.

Lisa Dickinson fills hexagon openings with patterned paper while leaving others blank.

Projects-414da02a-28e3-4e75-aabf-b3b028992dff-affa9d822b454eec9777c8702f570354

The hexagon stickers by Teresa Collins on this page by staceymichu make it easy to build a pattern.

Projects-8bfcadac-4b3e-4824-9a98-04f8e2c7bc5f-c49cd96d4d19405e98a3a3eb7074aa6a-1

Jill Sprott cuts the shapes in halves and stitches them together on this page about her daughter.

Projects-abd7283b-6209-48c4-908a-711a762e6de5-b414af3c2b6b4f5483171d3f8899353c-1

And finally, a grouping of hexagons is pleasing to the eye, but a strand of them is nice too!  Gavinsmum took a simple approach to using the shape on her page "Wanderlust."

Shop hexagons in the store here; you'll find them show up in masks, patterned paper, stickers, tape and more.  Have fun playing with this geometric shape for yourself!

Craftroom storage with Janna Werner.

Janna-Werner-Craft-Room-1

Hello everyone, this is Janna with a short tour through my craft space. Today I´d like to show you a few of my storage solutions. As I prefer to be able to see all my craft supplies, I have only one big commode in my room. It has 8 drawers and stores the things I do not use regularly plus replenishments.

Janna-Werner-Craft-Room-2

Most of the boxes in my room are made of transparent plastic or wood. I just need to see which supplies I have, otherwise I will forget about them. For a pop of color I have three colored fabric boxes that store my Crate Paper embellishments, alphabets (especially thickers).

Janna-Werner-Craft-Room-3

The scrapbooking papers are stored in transparent shelves, right to one of the two tables in my room. Tools, like scissors, glue, ink are stored in the transparent boxes on the right side. The punches are in wooden boxes - I do not have that many so I know which shapes/borders I have and do not need to see them. The sprays I like most are on the right to the craft table. So, all the supplies that I like to use often are within my reach (I really do not like searching for things while crafting).

Janna-Werner-Craft-Room-4

Janna-Werner-Craft-Room-5

I got another embellishment basket close to the crafting table. It stores newer products, like these ones from Studio Calico, Crate Paper and Amy Tangerine.

Janna-Werner-Craft-Room-6

Maybe you know that one of my scrapbooking addictions is Washi Tape :) They are not only perfect for crafty projects, but also as decoration. I put them in glasses which stand on the windowsill in my room. This looks absolutely beautiful, especially when the sun is shining.

This was a little impression of how I store supplies in my room. What about you? Do you like to see your supplies as well or do you prefer them to be in drawers? What is your best storage tip? Let us know!

Have a lovely day, everyone.
Janna

Shape Up Your Scrapbooking: Pie Charts

  642ab84e3e417ad88b437da16cf4e899

Source

Happy Pi day!  We could not resist presenting pie charts in today's post with it being Pi Day!  Kevin, one of the developrs here at Two Peas, brought in pie for the occasion.  I will be indulging in a slice shortly after the drafting of this post.  Here are some super cool layouts using pie charts!

Projects-ef2d2f00-ae68-4fec-8ddf-e072a2d75a45-34081889f1df4b909b908953d7bd22b8

We love how this trend can illustrate the "data" of our lives.  Madeline has done just that on her layout documenting a day in her son's life.  We love her use of patterned paper and the "key."

Projects-4096fb32-a541-4a27-bd9f-5eb2c1fc6028-45c0bf6f5524490db72110b8766f17d3

Angsandy assembles a pie chart with twine and a circular die cut made up of text.

This icon can help tell the story of how we prioritize and divide up our time.  Christin Drumheller tells the story of how she strives for balance on her page here.

Garden Girl Lynn Ghahary used the answers her sons replied with when she asked them what they were grateful for as the basis for her pie chart construction.

Both Kristina and Janna included pie charts on their layouts for this month's shape-themed project release.  See their pages here and here.

Projects-ef45f493-639f-40da-aeac-fe728e2e362f-b20e25868b8542fb86eacc1d32695702

Today's edition of Get the Look is inspired by this digital layout by dianeskie.  We love how her black and white photo is contrasted by a bold color scheme.  We're drawn to the way she's piled on the patterns and yet kept her page feeling very clean.  Airmail and travel icons help to reinforce her message, while chevron and arrowheads give her page a very now and trendy feel.  Here are a few products we spotted that would help one achieve this look:

Shape Up Your Scrapbooking: Geotags

Geotagpattern
Geotagging, the process of marking photos and other media with a location, has become very popular with the rise of social media.  Naturally, the trend is not left out of the paper crafting world!  As we look at shapes this month, we could not skip over geotags - we love how this icon tells the 'where we were' part of our stories.  Here's a look at how we're seeing it used in scrapbooking:

Projects-d35398b5-0ab5-47c4-9383-2befde6fb72e-f67aa1b427a04f0590268d0bfe861651

Garden Girl Nancy Damiano labels each of her polaroid-framed vacation photos with a geotag and a label of where they visited.  See how this layout came together on video here.

Projects-235ad2fe-7c5a-4ab1-b77e-bc4ae66cb41d-30a60b556975412990c9985b1b66e4e5

Airport photos and travel-themed embellishments connected to twine are linked from a geotag on this page from margrethe.  The accent shows despite the many places this scrapbooker goes, her journey starts and ends with home in Norway.

Projects-770d840a-a061-40b3-a461-725ee2890577-5a1495cee3b24d7c8896433304749560

A tangerine-orange geotag pops against a grey background on this simple layout by rockermorsan all about her beloved city.

Scrapnyata dots her "i" with a geotag on this layout that features a college campus map.  Clever!

Tutorial: Ombre Letters with Jill Sprott

Ombre isn't just fun to say (om-bray), it's also a fun effect to create on a layout. Mists in hand, adding gradations of color to a title is a cinch. It's a technique I've used with a variety of colors and page themes:

Afternoon Tea detail 2Ombre 1 Her Holiday title detail
All of these layouts include die-cut letters in their titles, but today, I'll show you how you can also apply the same effect to your next layout using the negative spaces from your die-cuts.

Step 1. Gather some basic supplies.

IMG_9556You'll need:

- mist in assorted colors (analogous colors, or colors next to each other on the color wheel, work well together, like the orange, pink, and yellow Color Mists or the yellow, green, and blue Mister Huey's above).

- two large paper scraps that you don't mind misting over

- a large cardboard box

- your target title: die-cut letters OR the sheet left behind (containing the negative space) and a piece of cardstock that will eventually contain your finished title.

IMG_9562Step 2. Place your title (whether die-cut letters on their own or negative spaces, backed with cardstock) in the box and a place one piece of scrap paper above the title, and one below it. Move the bottom piece of paper upward to cover the title until only the very top of the title is showing.

IMG_9564 IMG_9565Step 3. Select your first color of mist.  Shake it to be sure that the consistency of the mist inside is uniform.  Hold the bottle a few inches away from the paper and lightly spritz over the top of the title.

IMG_9566Step 4. Adjust the paper scraps, moving the top piece downward to cover the just-misted area, and the bottom piece downward all the way to expose the rest of the title. Repeat the misting in a different color.

IMG_9571Step 5. Readjust the paper scraps one last time, moving the top piece downward to cover the just-misted area, and the bottom piece downward a bit to expose the final section of the title. Repeat the misting in the third color selected.

IMG_9574Step 6. Wait a moment for the mist to dry, and then carefully remove the paper scraps to expose the final misted title.

IMG_9579 IMG_9595
The negative-space die-cut approach tends to result in a title that is a little imperfect around the edges, but endearing all the same. Using die-cut letters will result in a more precise effect. Regardless of the outcome, I love the ombre look both ways!

Thanks for joining me today!

Shape Up Your Scrapbooking: Triangles

40e39e64c784dbee8fef9fe44291631c(Source)

I never thought I'd want to look at a triangle again after geometry class, but this shape is proving to be a favorite in the way we see it trending all around us.  Not only do they give your projects a hip and fresh design, they are easy to make and use!

Projects-54888013-9d0d-477a-8205-7eab052b1e7a-64d24aff08b046f99908b080d5c28267

Jen Johner layers the Studio Calico wood veneer shapes over triangles she's cut and arranged by hand.  By leaving some triangle spaces blank, she's broken the pattern and created extra interest.

The oversized triangle on this layout by adogslife13 makes a large impact and gives space to a cluster of embellishments.  The row of tiny arrowheads - a similar shape - on the journaling card highlights the difference in scale.

Rows of triangles filled with patterned paper give this clean and bold page by sodulce a sense of rhythm.  You can achieve this look using a Silhouette machine or an exacto knife!

Shape Up Your Scrapbooking: Arrows

Bc2a4321c178d6e92f720770e16f7817(source)

This month we're shaping up our scrapbooking!  Let's take a look at one of the hottest icons we're seeing trending in papercrafting, fashion, home decor and more - arrows!

Arrows can help give a sense of movement to our projects, and work as a design element that brings the viewer's focus to a specific point.  Here are a few examples:

Janna's recent In the Mood to Scrap video tutorial is dedicated to arrows.  She uses a variety of them to frame her subject.

The grouping of arrows arranged on this card by Laura Craigie lead your eye to the sentiment.

The alternating arrows on the background of Lexi's layout here create a sense of rhythm, while the kraft shapes bring attention to the colorful title, Bang!

Die cut look without a machine with Lilith Eeckels

I really waited quite a while before getting my Silhouette cameo. Today I can't scrapbook without it, but I know it isn't always easy to invest in such equipment. Before buying the Silhouette I wanted to create the same look and found few ways to do just that.

1. Use the negatives of sticker / chipboard sheets.

2. Use punches and punch out along the border.  Another idea is to punch out a design, take a larger punch and punch over it (I used this technique for the butterflies in circles situated at the top and bottom of my layout).

Blogpost
3. Look for products in the store that have the die cut look. Here are just a few:

On my layout I used die cuts from Studio Calico on the photos. I would usually cut similar ones out using my cameo but sometimes I don't have the time and I really love using products like these. You get several in a packet and there is a huge variaty of frames in the TwoPeas store. ( click here )

I also used a border punch, the negative space of a butterfly sticker sheet and some left over chipboard. I love the effect it creates and it also enables me to use up all those leftover scraps.

The card was created using an EK success border punch and a scalloped circle punch. It took me 10 minutes to create. I wouldn't have been able to use my cameo in that time frame.

Have a closer look at your supplies and you'll be surprised to see how many products you can use to create that "Silhouette/Die cut machine" look.

Happy scrapping, Lilith

Today's edition of Get the Look is inspired by this digital layout by mrivas2181.  The golden yellows are contrasted by a deep navy; pops of raspeberry pink and daisy accents add a playful feel.  The composition of her layout with its many sections and boxes would be a fun one to scraplift, too!  Here are a few products we spotted that would help one achieve this look:
