Scrapbooking Summer Destinations with Nancy Damiano

It's that time of the year, when we gather our families (and sometimes our bags) and head out on a summer adventure. Whether it's a theme park vacation, weekend getaway, or a day at the local water park - family memories are being made. Let's not forget to scrapbook them!

Let's take a look at a trip with multiple destinations. I wanted to capture a small snapshot of each of the islands we visiting on our cruise. By using mini polaroid frames and one enlarged photo, three different islands were highlighted on one page.

2PsTodayWas

A weekend trip to a local campground is embellished with themed elements and touches of wood. The use of an enlarged photo here highlights the who and where of this trip.

418101c9bdac422a9823fed16ba99ac0

Creating a day-by-day layout is a great way to document a theme park vacation. An overview of which park was visited, restaurant meals, weather and a synopsis of the day's highlights is included in the page below.

2PsDisneyDays

Speaking of Disney vacations, the divided page protector style of scrapbooking is a quick and simple way to document dozes of photos in one simple format. For a peek at the completed album, watch the video HERE.

DisneyPL2

Days spent at county fair or seaside boardwalk can be scrapbooked in a grid design. This allows you to use many photos and include the story of your adventure or traditions. Watch a video of how this page came together here.

2PsBoardwalk

A day at the beach (although this wasn't a local one), is highlighted by using a monochromatic color scheme. This is a really easy way to set the mood of a layout.

Stthomasfinaltag

One of my favorite ways to document summer destinations, is to created a themed minibook. Including family favorites, trip highlights and memorabilia in one small book is an excellent way to scrapbook those memories. Plus, they are fun to create!

Marco1label
There's an instructional video on how to include multiple photos, memorabilia and create chapters to tell your story HERE.

Scrapbooking summer destination is one of my favorite things to do. Some of our happiest families are made when discovering new places. I come back with loads of photos and stories to tell. If you'd like more info on how to organize and scrapbook your trips, check out Scrapbooking Family Vacations.

I hope your next destination is a fun one!

Behind the Designs: the Persimmon collection by BasicGrey

We have another designer interview today!  We're so excited the BasicGrey team shared with us the story behind how they developed one of their newest collections.  Enjoy!

Persimmon Collection by BasicGrey

TELL US ABOUT ONE OF YOUR UPCOMING COLLECTIONS.  One of our new lines is a Fall/Halloween line called Persimmon. We were really inspired by the Aztec prints and patterns trending right now and thought it would work perfectly with a fall line. We thought the use of navy really pulled it together for fall. This way we got a line of papers that were on trend with color and pattern and could be used for Fall or Halloween, but wasn't too theme specific.

Persimmon1

WHERE DOES YOUR TEAM LOOK FOR INSPIRATION?  Everywhere: shopping, fashion, magazines, the local art community, Pinterest… There are a lot of inspiring blogs that we follow too.

ONCE YOU HAVE A CONCEPT FOR A COLLECTION, WHAT IS THE DESIGN PROCESS LIKE? First we put together a style board. We pull together patterns that we feel work for the line. We make sure we have a good mix of patterns styles and scale and that they work cohesively together. We also pick colors at this point and fonts that have the feel we want for the line. Then we start designing papers and make sure the colors are working. Once we start laying the papers out together, sometimes we tweak them or add patterns that we feel are missing. When papers are designed we brainstorm what kind of embellishments will be a good fit and design those. The last thing we design are the stickers.

Persimmon_2

HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON THE NAME FOR A LINE?  For the line name we all throw out options that we like and everyone contributes and then we vote and discuss what has the best feel.

HOW DO YOU NAME THE PAPERS?  For papers we pick a theme for the names and stick to that main theme. For Persimmon we went with yummy Thanksgiving and fall type foods like Bread Pudding, Apple Crisp & Butternut Squash.

Persimmon3

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF DEVELOPING A COLLECTION?  THE MOST CHALLENGING?  Most rewarding is when we pair the papers and we all get excited about how it all came together and works cohesively. Most challenging is getting to that place!

Persimmon4

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE FROM YOUR NEW RELEASES?  We love how we had very universal patterns for Persimmon and used our embellishments to pull in some Halloween themed pieces. This is especially obvious in our waterfall pack. There are lots of fun Halloween die cuts and journaling pages, but it also has Fall elements.

Behind the Designs: Kelly Marie Alvarez

We are pleased to have the pleasure of hearing from Kelly Marie Alvarez of Lawn Fawn and sharing with you the story behind their newest products.  She is as delightful as the smiling faces on her stamps!

Kelly Marie Alvarez
What are your upcoming collections?  We have two new collections, Into the Woods and Peace Joy Love. We also have 14 new stamp sets and 12 new die sets!

3

What was the inspiration behind them? Where do you look for inspiration?
We absolutely love the outdoors and, of course, critters, so Into the Woods just sort of naturally happened! We knew we wanted a collection that was gender neutral and gave off that warmth of the Autumn season. We also wanted something that would make people smile!
Into the Woods

For our Winter collection, we were inspired by the chalkboard trend. We really wanted to do it in the Lawn Fawn style! We thought that charcoal color was a great addition to the traditional colors of Christmas!
Peace Joy Love

Once you have a concept for a collection, what is the design process like?
We have a secret Pinterest board where we collect ideas and concepts. From there we are able to narrow down all of our ideas until we find one that we think will work well. Once all of the patterns are drawn, we play with scale and color. It is a lot of fun!
2

How do you decide on the name for a line? How do you name the papers?
Erica and I have way too much fun naming our paper lines and stamp sets. In this case, we thought Into the Woods would be cute since there is a musical with the same name. We met doing musicals, so it was a perfect choice! We thought that Peace Joy Love really encapsulated the feelings of the Winter season, so it seemed perfect!
1

When we name individual papers, we always try to start with a theme. For Into the Woods we decided on tree names, and for Peace Joy Love we picked people's names that sounded like holiday themes, for example, Gloria, Rudolph, Klaus, and Holly!
Birch
Joy

What is the most rewarding part of developing a collection? What is the most challenging?

The most rewarding part, hands down, is seeing everyone create with it. Every morning feels like Christmas morning as we see tweets and blog posts of people creating with our paper and stamps. We just love it!

The most challenging part is narrowing everything down. It is so hard to make cuts on stamps or pattern ideas. We always have a tough time with that!

What is your favorite piece from your new release?  This is such a hard question! I really love our new Lawn Ornaments flair and sequins, but, I have to say, that the Yeti, Set, Go stamp set has a very special place in my heart. I just love yetis! :)

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Kelly!  You can check out more from Lawn Fawn on their blog, and browse our selection of their papers, stamps, dies and more from here.

8 New themed SN@P! Sets - Everyday, Baby Girl, Baby Boy, Him, Her, Love, Christmas and Family:

Snapcollections

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THEM? Say Cheese has been a collection I've dreamed about doing since the conception of Simple Stories - see the whole back story here of how it all started.

6a0120a6a1e222970c0192ac03c98d970d-800wi

The new SN@P! sets are the extension of our popular SN@P! products - and have bit of snap goodness in every set.  We wanted to provide customers with more themed sets with the same SN@P! look and feel, but with different color palettes and icons for all of occasions in their lives. We LOVE the bold colors, graphics and fun coordinates.

(Pictured: Sn@p Family 3x4 Cards)

WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR INSPIRATION? Everywhere!

ONCE YOU HAVE A CONCEPT FOR A COLLECTION, WHAT IS THE DESIGN PROCESS LIKE? We experiment with different color palettes to get just the right look, then I work with our designers one on one to come up with the original illustrations and artwork for the icons and design elements.  I work with our designers throughout the whole process from picking the color palette, sketching elements, paper and designs to quotes, words and sayings.  It always amazes me when they take my ideas, and turn them into art that exceeds my expectations!

6a0120a6a1e222970c01901e47ad8f970b-800wi

HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON THE NAME FOR A LINE? It's usually different for each line - sometimes before we start a collection I already know the name while other times it takes root during the design process and the look and feel of the collection

HOW DO YOU NAME THE PAPERS? This is another fun part of the design process, we usually pick common terms from the elements of the collection.  I try to match the look and feel of the paper with the name.  For instance, in Smarty Pants our "School Spirit" paper has a rich school plaid front with yellow stars back -it's just fitting of all things school spirit from uniforms, banners and flags.

6a0120a6a1e222970c0192ac067fe2970d-800wi

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF DEVELOPING A COLLECTION? I love the whole process - even the late nights and stressful deadlines - but the best part is when it finally all comes together and everything's complete and introducing that new collection to our customers..nothing beats hearing how excited they are about the design, collection and how plan to use the products or how excited they are to create an album with our quick and easy approach.

6a0120a6a1e222970c017c356a5d88970b-800wi

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING? Juggling all of the deadlines, managing several design projects at once, and timing everything to get a release out the door at just the right time.  I'm a perfectionist and want to make sure everything's perfect...

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE FROM YOUR NEW RELEASES?  Obviously I love everything from all our releases, but my favorite would have to be the new Autograph Book/Mini Album from the Say Cheese collection.  This is something that I've dreamed about for a long time (along with the entire Say Cheese collection) - and to me it's the perfect autograph book; pre-designed autograph pages in a cool, trendy design perfect for a character’s autograph, then a corresponding 4x6 pocket page where you simply insert the photo of your favorite character.  It’s a printed chipboard, spiral bound 4x6 book with 12 double-sided 4x6 pages, and 12 4x6 pocket pages

Autograph book inserts

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Amber!  Keep up with everything new from Simple Stories on their blog, and browse their products in the Two Peas store!

Behind the Designs: Kaitlin Sheaffer

 Kaitlin Sheaffer Profile

We are thrilled to have the talented Kaitlin Sheaffer with us here today to tell us about her first line with Carta Bella!  Enjoy reading about her process behind this beautiful collection.

---

Tell us about your upcoming collection.  Hello Again is my first collection with Carta Bella. It includes 12 double sided textured papers (24 designs) and one element sticker sheet and there's a 6x6 paper pad as well.

What was the inspiration behind it?  I have a major love of stationery and office supply products so that is the direction I was headed with Hello Again. I used elements such as feather pens, memo pads and rubber stamps to convey an 'on my desk theme' and everyday and friendship sentiments. Once I started going with the line I realized adding elements like typewriters, telephones and word bubbles would tie in the ‘Hello’ part of the name. The entire line makes me think of writing letters or ‘chit-chatting’ with friends and family!  I used some watercoloring effects to soften the colors and give it a more tone on tone feel.

  Hello Again preview

Where do you look for inspiration? Many places! Anything from a day out shopping or reading a book with my children at bedtime can be inspiring. Sometimes it's seeing something or it can be a feeling, but it can also be a need or want for something when I am doing my own scrapbooking. I am constantly collecting ideas for upcoming designs and keep a sketch pad with me at all times.

 Desk

Once you have a concept for a collection, what is the design process like? I start by doing rough sketches and notes of papers and elements I want throughout the line. Typically my notes and sketches are a real mess and it’s usually just something to help me remember for when I am ready to sit down at the computer. This time I came up with a very broad color scheme so the designers at Carta Bella helped me narrow it down to a few key colors and I added in a few tonal colors to help soften the look of the line. I translate my sketches and notes to papers and elements that help convey the line and present them to the designers and creative director. They look over the designs and provide suggestions and help me to refine the look of the entire line. For ‘Hello Again’ some papers were in finished state early on and then some papers took a few times of me reworking to get them to fit with the overall theme better. Sometimes my initial sketches don’t work out at all and the design changes into something completely different than I pictured at first.

  Sketch1

Sketch2

How do you decide on the name for a line?  For this line I had a name picked out very early in the development stage. But when the line was finished they suggested a name change. I was already using the word ‘Hello’ in the name and really wanted to keep it so I began thinking of different ways I could use the word 'Hello'. I was going back and forth between ‘Hello Again’ and one other name and remembered the Neil Diamond song, Hello Again. I thought it not only perfectly described the line but it also reminded me of my grandmother, who loved Neil Diamond.

  2948446_600x600

How do you name the papers?  Oddly enough, not much thought went into this part! I named my files on the computer as I created the papers. The names were just descriptive names to help me remember them quickly but not much thought went into them. When I submitted them, the names for the papers stayed as the file name unless the designers at Carta Bella/ Echo Park tweaked them. Next time I might put more thought into naming my files because I didn't remember that part of the process!

2948456_600x600

What is the most rewarding part of developing a collection?  So far it has been seeing the papers and stickers in print! I was so anxious to receive them!  When I did finally see them I was so pleased with how it all turned out! It's great to see that change from screen to product and have the product actually be better than what you expected! I'm really looking forward to seeing people work with the line. When I was designing, I definitely had ideas in mind on how to use different papers but it’s so exciting seeing how creative others are with the papers and what ideas they have for them.

  2948450_600x600

What is the most challenging? Because this was my first collection a lot of what was challenging at first was understanding what made a good paper. I was so accustomed to making smaller tags from Ormolu. I really had to examine what qualities I like in a paper and then consider how all of the papers went together in the collection. The designers at Carta Bella were so helpful in that they were able to provide me with suggestions and tell me what was working and what was not working. In the end I think the challenges I faced in the beginning really helped me look more critically at what I was designing and I learned a lot this first time around.

 2948447_600x600

What is your favorite piece from your new release?  It's so hard to pick because I really love each paper for a different reason! Definitely the stickers because those were so fun to work on! I can seriously see using up every sticker on this sheet. The little paper-doll chain at the bottom has little heart cut outs in between so there are a bunch of watercolored heart stickers in the negative portion. I really can't wait to use all of those!

2948458_600x600

I also had so much fun creating the 3x4 journaling card paper. I saved this sheet for last because I figured it would be the easiest for me since I have done so many 3x4 designs. I really love how it came out and how you see pieces of the entire line within it.

2948448_600x600

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Kaitlin!  Keep up with Kaitlin on her blog, and check out her line Hello Again in the Two Peas store here.

Scrapbooking Summer: At the beach

Summer to me is sand and sun and salty air.  As soon as I can see the sights of summer in my future, I start the countdown to my beach trip, which is in maybe January, LOL.  I love the beach. Everything about it.  And I cannot help to scrapbook it a lot.  Sometimes, I will even end up scrapbooking the same pictures from the beach more than once.  I can't help it!  Seeing the people I love the most at the place I love the most is just a perfect combination for me.

Scrapbooking summer at the beach is the best thing ever, for me.  Here is a little beach page roundup for you.

Beach bound

Here they are on the way to the beach.

Everyday

What I dream about all year long.

Flip hair

A funny outtake from our annual Christmas card photo session.

Me&him

Me and my favorite guy at the beach.

Our beach life

Our summer beach life.

Sunset

We are outside all day long!

Beach stars

Even on cloudy days,

Favorite things

What could be better?

Dream

My girls all look like home when they are at the beach.

So that is just a few.  I have a ton more.  Scrapbooking summer is easy when you are scrapbooking something and someone you love so very much.  I cannot wait for the upcoming weeks and all the new pictures I will have to scrapbook from this week - because I am at the beach now!  Yes, soaking up the sun and hanging out in the sand, loving very minute.

Happy Summer!

10 Ways for Scrapbooking with Paperclips

10WAYSPAPERCLIPS

We are obsessed with paperclips lately!  Here are a handful of clever ways we've seen them used in the Garden and the Member Gallery:

Screen Shot 2013-07-10 at 4.44.37 PM

1. Paperclips are not just functional, but can be decorative! Handstitch them onto your project like Kristina has done in her Project Life spread and video tutorial.

Projects-299aa186-c2aa-4a69-8a73-b1c2d06163ed-4cbef8585b2d4efa947ba169aabcf113

2. Clip on strips of words or sayings.  A yellow clip helps to subtly reinforce an expression about sunshine on this double-page layout and video tutorial by Nancy Damiano.

Projects-1491b1df-7816-46b7-b284-90b7a2c859a8-84a67d1c7a2844bc8ffd6ed4f4de1732

3. Bring attention to a word by placing it inside.  Think of your paperclip as a label like Jennifer Kinkade has done on her page "20 Years Strong."

Projects-a9f89a63-782e-433c-a13f-24a43a9d4f5d-79bbe86344da4b41af7722e15c79775a

4. Layer above and below your paperclip!  Treat this metal embellishment like you would a die cut or another piece of paper. How can you alter it and work with it to make it go further in your scrapbooking?  Jennifer Kinkade has placed a sticker beneath her arrow clip, and machine stitched over it.

Marcy's Project Life

5. Fold and clip memorabilia in! Marcy Penner uses her Project Life spread as a time capsule by including a receipt from a trip to the grocery store.

Marcy's Page

6.  Marcy scrapbooks with a clip again, this time using it to bring attention to an area in a photo on her Summer page for the Garden.

Projects-84b1de41-50b8-465e-81e0-10bfde2142a1-9ccf338ef1384e3e8691b7527a203e34

7.  Clip them onto journaling cards that live in pockets like Glitter Girl has done here in her recent video and lesson "Starry Sky Schematics."  They work well as "pulls" for these hidden stories.

Projects-b1f7ad3f-1bad-42a5-9433-6d8b08e1020c-c7df7183343947038a57f6d5434e2536-1

8.  Create depth by staggering a pile of photos and clipping them together! Tracermajig has done this digitally, but you could create the same look with duplicate photos or by even printing the same photo a few times at home.

Jamie's page

9. Attach thread, twine, or string with a clip, allowing the fibers to hang loosely.  I did this on a layout in my pregnancy album and I love the way this bow reinforces the theme of showers and gifts.

Projects-dd3e1fef-4fb2-4607-9979-4fea183e6ebf-d9ae87d3009a450fa3b299f0def57064

10. Attach clips to the edges of mini album pages.  They can help serve as tabs for your book.  jleija uses office supply clips in her mini album "Chicago Daybook."

Play with paperclips for yourself and browse our selection here!

We'd love to hear how you are putting these embellishments to work in your projects.  And some news/reminder: EVERYTHING in the store through the 14th is 20% off - including brand new stuff!
