3 Reasons to Use Transparent Supplies in Scrapbooking

Layout using vellum by Kristina Nicolai-White

Transparencies are everywhere... vellum has made a comeback, many die-cut packs contains a see-through element, we're even preferring our abc's in plastic!  If you've not added transparencies to your stash, here are three reasons why these products are a blast to use in your scrapbooking or other paper projects:

Layout by Nancy Damiano using plastic alphas

Layout and video by Corrie Jones using transparent die cuts

1. Transparencies create depth.  Layering is one of our very favorite ways to work with paper.  By adding a transperent piece in the mix of our layering, we're inviting the viewer to look even closer.

Mini album by Stephanie Bryan using vellum pockets

2. Transparencies create surprise.  See-through products give us ways to hint at something more within our projects.  Pull out the note in that vellum pocket - what does it say under that foggy paper layer?  What's hiding under that transparent overlay...what page is next?

Layout using photo overlays by Jill Sprott

Layout by Janna Werner using vellum

3.  Transparencies give you the opportunity to create cool effects.  There are so many photo overlays on the market now making it easy to create a vintage effect.  Many clear products have a resist quality to them so that when you use inks or mists, a pattern will pop through the color.  And finally, you don't have to be technique savvy to customize a transparent piece, a simple white pen on vellum can be beautiful too!

Transparent Scrapbooking Supplies

Looking to add these to your stash?  Search overlays, plastic, transparencies and vellum in the store.  What about you?  Have you worked with transparencies in your projects?

Get the Look: elseepe

Beach by elseepe

There is so much to love about this layout by elseepe; it's no wonder it's made its way to the top views in the gallery.  The colors are what catch our eye first, but we love the effects added to give it texture ... like sand on a beach!  This layout is digital, but could easily be recreated with Project Life cards, mist and stencils, and a few favorite embellishments.

Getthelook

We think this look would be great to try in a vacation mini album.  Shop elseepe's look here!

What's in my Blue Q Bag

We love using Blue Q bags as a home for scrapbooking supplies on-the-go, or even a place for your own personal mini kit!  Here's a look inside one of our Blue Q bag kits:

Blueqbag

The camera pouch is holding a mini Kikkerland journal (on deep clearance!) for scribbling notes with a nice, black journaling pen.  Mini envelopes and decorative bags are the perfect spots to safely tuck away memorabilia or other treasures.  Enamel dots, flair and washi dress up the pages of the journal, while handwritten style-stamps by Ali Edwards add polished phrases to help tell your story.  Shop our Blue Q kit here!

What about you?  What are you putting in your Blue Q bag?

Autumn Photo Tips with Jennifer Kinkade

Contrast

Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph.”--Matt Hardy

I really believe there are things nobody would see if I didn’t photograph them.” --Diane Arbus

When it comes to photography, it’s all about what you see and how you see, and being able to translate that vision into a picture.  I am going to share some tips and ideas for capturing Fall/Autumn wherever you may live. Most of these tips are achievable whether you have a fancy DSLR, a small point and shoot, or your handy camera phone!

Shoes

*When should you photograph?--Ideally, the best of light can be found early in the morning  (around sunrise) or in the evening (sunset)--also known as the “golden hour”. Be aware that midday sun can create harsh lighting and shadows on your subjects.

  Landscape_1

Wvusoccer

*Go BIG--Think landscapes, bridges, sports stadiums, etc. Capture the big picture.

Leaves

Leaves in hand

*Get close--Create visual interest. Be thinking of smaller details such as leaves, pine cones, berries on trees, etc. Changing your point of view and capturing the smallest of details adds interest and variety to photos. Even the smallest of things can have a big impact.

Reflection

*Reflections--This is an element of interest you can capture regardless of if it is cool or hot, colorful or not in your area. Reflections in water are like mirrors! You can capture blue skies and fluffy clouds or maybe your child or pet looking in a mud puddle!

Backlighting

*Play with light! You can capture sun streaming through trees on leaves or create a silhouette shot or glowing appearance to your subject depending on your focus point. Experimenting with the direction of lighting is a fun way to capture photographs!

Decor_1

Scarf

  Scone

*It’s not just about the leaves!-- Think of what you love to capture...favorite foods, books, a pair of boots, scarves, Back to School activities or festivals, home decor, being at sporting events with friends, sipping tea or coffee, etc. Write down things you love, then go photograph them!

Coffee

The key is having fun and lots of practice! You never know what you might capture by just going out and experimenting!!

Fall Paper Crafting with Julie Campbell

Our theme this month is Fall.  What about this season do you love to capture in your projects?  Do you have a favorite Fall photo?  “Thank You” cards are some of my very favorite cards to make & this season always is a reminder to be thankful.  The pace of life seems to slow down a bit right alongside the changing of the leaves & the cooler weather.  I love to steal a few moments away & create projects in my craft space that reflect the colors & textures that surround me.

I also love adding bits & pieces of our lives to my Project Life album.  Here is one of my favorite photos from last fall:

  Fallfamilyphoto

What Fall collections in the store do you especially love? Echo Park's Oh So Thankful collection is really fun!  I especially love this divided paper called “My Favorite.”  It makes for a great starting point for autumn cards!

My Favorite paper

I’m really excited about BasicGrey’s new Persimmon collection (coming soon to the store!).  It has everything included to make adorable cards, mini books, or layouts for the season.

Persimmon collection by BasicGrey

I love to incorporate my Silhouette die cuts in my projects & this September Cut File is adorable!  Did I mention that it is FREE?!?

  September Free Cut File

What project in the gallery about this season have caught your eye?

This Halloween card by Limedoodle is gorgeous!

If you’re looking for layout inspiration for the season, you have to take a look at this Fall page by AnkeKramer.  It’s stunning!

  Projects-74011370-3a56-480c-8ee6-3b2e79eff0a2-2c85bafe13194fd6be0f48dafa978bf3

How have you captured this season in your projects in the past?  This is a card that I made last fall.  I drew my colors from the soon-to-be harvested corn fields & autumn leaves that surround my home.

 Thankful card

Thanks for sharing, Julie.  See more from Julie on Two Peas and on her blog, and be sure not to miss her Trendy Trios card making class (it's FREE!) each month on the 1st!

DIY t-shirts with digital cut files

Hey peas!  It's Laura Craigie here, and today I thought I'd venture away from scrapbooking to show you how I spice up some plain kid's t-shirts with digital cut files from the Two Peas store in two different ways.

Today I'm using the Patterned Cards, and the Arrows cut files.

Cutfiles

First thing is to cut the files out in the size you require for the front of your t-shirt.  I have a bunch of extra black vinyl, so I chose to cut mine out with that.  If you don't have vinyl, which is admittedly a more expensive option, you can easily use freezer paper, and then iron it to the shirt.  I've done this before and it works great too!

For my first shirt I applied the vinyl cut to the front of the tshirt, and inserted a piece of cardboard in the shirt so the bleach didn't leak through to the other side of the shirt.

Bleach1

Then you simply spray around the image with the bleach!  You definitely want to go easy on the bleach to start.  You can always add more later if needed, but you obviously can't take it back.

Bleach2

You can see it's already starting to change the color of the shirt.  I keep a piece of paper towel handy to blot the top of the vinyl, and any extra bleach up to minimize it bleeding under the vinyl or freezer paper.

It usually takes about 5 or 6 min for the bleach to work it's magic, but keep an eye on it and you can visually see when it's transformed.  Then it's as easy as peeling back your vinyl, and throwing the shirt in the dryer (by itself) to stop the bleach, and dry the shirt.  I then wash and dry it as I normally would a shirt.  Although just to be safe I wouldn't throw it in the wash with anything too important that first time!

And here is my cutie pie in his new shirt!

Bleach3

Now for the second shirt, which is even easier than the first if that's possible! :)

Sharpie1

Apply the vinyl, or freezer paper cut to the front of the shirt, then you take a Fabric Sharpie and simply colour it in!  I also drew a line around the perimeter of the circle so the whole design would stand out more like the original cut file.

Sharpie2

Color every last speck in, and then my favorite part, peel it back to reveal the final design.
Sharpie3

Here is my other cutie in his new shirt that my own husband didn't even believe I made ;)

Sharpie4

Thanks for stopping by today, I hope you feel inspired to make your own unique shirts too.  If you do, leave me a comment below so I can see you creations! :)

Happy Monday!

Trends Watch: Gold

Trends Watch: Gold

Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4

If you follow our pins, chances are you've seen we have been pinning gold!  This metallic is all the rage these days, and we've seen it in many of the new products to hit the store.

Desktop160

Here are a few fun ideas to try using gold:

Wilna's Gold-Dipped Title

DIP IT IN GOLD!  Notice Wilna's title?  You can create this effect with a variety of mediums.  She's used embossing powder, but glitter would be fun too.  Or give a faux dipped look by coloring in with a gold pen.

Gold border by Michelle De Leon

ADD SOME SHINE OR SPARKLE. Gold and sparkle just seem to belong together.  Michelle used a string of sequins to make this heart embellishment.

Goldminibook

GO MONOCHROMATIC.  Stephanie Bryan created this stunning mini album by using foundations of neutrals and really letting the gold take center stage.

Browse more gold goodness on our Pinterest board and in the store.  What do you think of this color trend?

Scrapbooking Fall with Lilith Eeckels

What about this season do you love to capture and scrap? Autumn is an amazing period of the year. I enjoy seeing nature get that orange red tint and feel the crispness of the air (though I could do without the freezing temperatures). I love seeing my boys play in the woods  with all the changes going on, their imagination is tickled. They love hiding in piles of leaves and playing games in  the woods that seems so different. These are the moments I love to capture and scrap.

FALL1

Do you have a favourite fall photo? Fall 2011 was amazing and we went for plenty of walks. On one of them I captured this shot of my 5 boys which I LOVE. It is so hard to get them all together so this picture is dear to me.

What fall collections in the store do you especially love? There are lots of fall collections this year that have caught my eye but I really love the Echo Park Reflections Fall collection. I love how it incorporates all things Fall, but the designs are subtle and sophisticated at the same time

Scrapbooking Fall with Marcy Penner

We've asked the Garden Girls how they're scrapbooking the Fall season.  Today it's Marcy Penner's turn!

Our theme this month is Fall.  What about this season do you love to capture and scrap?  Do you have a favorite Fall photo? I adore fall.  Oranges, yellows and reds.  Photos are just magical in that season.  Layering clothes and bringing out extra blankets.  It's my favourite season for sure.  I always try to get my kids outside for photos in the fall.  Photos amongst fallen leaves are some of my favorites.

Favorite Fall photo

What Fall collections in the store do you especially love? I have my eye on the new Oh So Thankful collection from Echo Park.  Those little foxes get me every time!  One my all time favorites is Crate paper's Acorn Avenue, which you can still find a few pieces of in the shop.  I'm also really looking forward to seeing Basic Grey's Persimmon line in the shop soon.

Favorite Fall Products
What projects in the gallery about this season have caught your eye?  I've been spending a little time in the gallery looking at fall projects and a few have really jumped out at me.  I love this one from alexesmariebrown using Persimmon.  I love the addition of navy to the traditional fall colour scheme.

Best Day Ever by Alexes Brown

And I'm kinda in love with this card from lime doodle.

Thank You Card by Limedoodle

How have you scrapbooked this season in the past?
I'm not a very "themed" scrapbooker.  I tend to take a few pieces from a themed lined and then add basics like ledger paper or kraft, book paper, polka dot papers and woodgrain anything… veneer, frames, etc.  I think one of my favourite fall layouts is actually the one I did for the September Two Peas gallery.

Let's Go by Marcy Penner

It's a nice example of creating a themed layout from multiple lines.  The badge, for example, is from a travel line.  But I used the fact that it was orange to pull it together on a page. I usually try to make a few layouts using fall photos and then I blink and before I know it it's already time to start scrapping Christmas!

Scrapbooking Fall with Céline Navarro

We've asked the Garden Girls how they're scrapbooking the Fall season.  Today Céline Navarro shares!

Our theme this month is Fall.  What about this season do you love to capture and scrap?  Do you have a favorite Fall photo?

Fall is probably my favorite season. I don't know why. Maybe it's because we have a hot and dry Summer and I'm just relieved we're going to get a few rain! And I also love getting dressed with Fall clothes! The sky color is also different. I often go to the beach to walk and I just love the smell of the salt in the air, it just smells different than in Summer.

And Fall reminds me of when I used to live in Montreal, in Quebec, a few years ago (back in 2004) - I will always remember the Mont Royal mountain with its different shades of yellow, orange, red and green! SO beautiful! Here's a picture of our appartment in Montreal :) I was lucky to go back to Montreal 3-4 times since then and it's a place I would go every year :) It's a second home.

How have you scrapbooked this season in the past?

  Hello Fall by Céline Navarro

Well, the thing is Fall isn't a fun season to photograph in the South Of France - colors don't change a lot, we've got a lot of rain, but the beach looks amazing. I have found myself scrapbooking Fall when I get to travel, and I have lots of photos from NYC and Montreal (where I used to live almost 10 years ago).

With Project Life, this will change and I'll get to capture this beautiful season way more now :)

Scrapbooking Fall with Paige Evans

We've asked the Garden Girls how they're scrapbooking the Fall season.  Today Paige Evans shares!

Our theme this month is Fall. What about this season do you love to capture and scrap? To me, Fall is the changing colors of the leaves. I love seeing the seemingly overnight transformation from greens to reds, oranges, yellows, and browns. Nothing says "Fall" more to me than jumping in a pile of leaves and throwing them in the air!

Favorite Photo

Do you have a favorite Fall photo? I have three! I used two in my latest Garden Girl fall-themed layout - FALL TODAY. They were taken last October when I was visiting my family in Seattle. The leaves were the prettiest colors I've ever seen and so my artistic sister took these photos of me and edited them in Adobe Photoshop to get the cool effects. The other picture is of a pretty assortment of colored leaves in the gutter. So beautiful! I love that nature and inspiration can be found everywhere, even in the gutter.

What Fall collections in the store do you especially love?

Feels Like Home

I love the new FEELS LIKE HOME collection by Little Yellow bicycle. It's a fun mix of fall colors and icons with the traditional reds, yellows, and oranges, plus a twist of blue to add the perfect amount of whimsy. The colors and patterns are exactly what you need for scrapping fall photos!

What project(s) in the gallery about this season have caught your eye?

In the Leaves by JennyChesnick

Using the new Feels Like Home collection by Little Yellow Bicycle, Jen Chesnick's layout with a bunch of patterned paper leaves immediately caught my eye! I love how the leaves fall across the layout, leading the eye all around and meet in the middle at the adorable photo of her daughter.

Fall Fun Card by APet

The fall-themed frame by APet also using the Feels Like Home collection by Little Yellow Bicycle would make the perfect addition to any home to welcome in the season.

How have you scrapbooked this season in the past?  All of my fall-themed layouts and cards have some kind of repeated leaf element on them. Nothing says "fall" more than leaves and I strive to make that connection obvious in my fall-themed projects!

Lilith's Scraproom

I have always longed for my own scraproom and when we decided to build our house we made sure there was an office space. I saw to it that it would be big enough to accomodate all my teaching supplies as well as desk space for my husband and a scrapnook. The architect planned on adding an extra restroom downstairs which I didn't think was necessary as I don't mind going up a flight of stairs. This meant more space in the office for my scrapping supplies. It is hard to imagine how it looks just showing pictures so I filmed the room. It will probably change in a couple of years when we finish other parts of the house but it suits me just fine. I hope you enjoy this little tour of my room.
