Halloween Week Guest Deisgner: Lisa Kisch

Guest Designer

The Guest Designer for Halloween week is Lisa Kisch!

Lisa
Lisa lives in Toronto, Canada, with her husband and her two little girls. She works as a stage actress and singer, but loves staying at home with her kids just as much! She loves documenting everyday life through scrapbooking. Little moments that would otherwise be forgotten are her passion! Lisa loves photography and learns more about using her camera every day. She is a very slow scrapper, but occasionally challenges herself to complete several layouts in an evening.

How did you get started scrapbooking?
I started scrapbooking with a Scrapbooks 101 class at my local scrapbook store, soon after my wedding in 2003. Although it took me two years to complete that album - I never looked back!

What is your favorite American Crafts product?
Oh, Thickers, of course! I can never get enough!

Meandyou
Me and You by Lisa Kisch

No matter what I do in my life, I know it always comes back to my husband and my kids. This layout is an expression of that! I cut tags to match the size of the Garden Cafe tags, to create a tone on tone background for my layout.

Supplies: Autumn Cider Paper (35519) - Nightfall, Decorartive Tags (77256) - Bits, Night Watch Paper (35508) - Nightfall, Garden Cafe Ribbon (89416) - Ribbon, Eclair Strawberry (53225) - Thickers, Eclair Cucumber (53226) - Thickers, Savor (42210) - Remarks Books

Sparklywitch-1
The Sparkly Witch by Lisa Kisch

I would never had considered using a black piece of paper for the background, but the whimsical dotted border on this piece of Nightfall paper changed my mind! It made the perfect background for my sparkly witch. If you look closely, you can see that I printed my journaling on the twill Nightfall ribbon. To do this I printed my journaling, affixed the ribbon on top, then ran it through my printer again!

Supplies: Night Owl Paper (35518) - Nightfall, Autumn Gathering Paper (35524) - Nightfall, Garden Cafe Ribbon (89416) - Ribbon, All Together (42219) - Flair, Night Watch Paper (35508) - Nightfall, Maple Pineapple (53221) - Thickers, Spells (72015) - Delights, Eclair Cucumber (53226) - Thickers, Pumpkin Patch (78054) - Details

Halloweencard
Halloween Card by Lisa Kisch

When I saw the "Fall Foliage" paper with its orange grid it seemed perfectly suited for a grid card. It was so easy to just fill those spaces with squares of patterned paper and a "Delight" in the centre!

Supplies: Fall Foliage Paper (35526) - Nightfall, Night Watch Paper (35508) - Nightfall, Nightlight Paper (35517) - Nightfall, Autumn Hollow Paper (35520) - Nightfall, Spells (72015) - Delights, Elm Geyser (53217) - Thickers

Treatbag
Halloween Treat Bag by Lisa Kisch

Here's a little treat bag to hang on someone's door. Maybe it's for a teacher or the babysitter! I used a wine cork from my junk drawer to add polka dots to a plain paper bag and cut fringe into my circle embellishment to give it a little texture.

Supplies: Night Watch Paper (35508) - Nightfall, Fall Foliage Paper (35526) - Nightfall, Pumpkin Patch (78054) - Details, Autumn Gathering Paper (35524) - Nightfall, Garden Cafe Ribbon (89416) - Ribbon

I sew on my layouts all the time and so the stitching on this next part will add texture in a fun conventional way. Change numbers depending on the month.

Make sure to take your time when sewing everything together. Getting your dates out of order can be a big ol' burn.

Halloween Tutorial by Corrie Jones

We're going to learn how to create this cute goodie bag with a step-by-step tutorial by Corrie Jones!

Step14

Corrie

Step 1: Cut an 8x8 piece of lightweight cardstock. Now get ready for a little origami!

Step1

Step 2: Fold the paper into a triangle.

Step2

Step 3: Fold one corner to the opposite side.

Step3

Step 4: Fold the top over and glue it lightly to keep it in place.

Step4

Step 5: Turn the paper over and repeat the last fold with the other side.

Step5

Step 6: Now you have your cup for your base!

Step6

Step 7: Use your cup as a guide and cut out from the black chalkboard paper a shape just larger than your cup.

Step7

Step 8: Choose your favorite Halloween paper from the Nightfall line and mat it on your black base.

Step8

Step 9: Fussy cut clouds or other shapes from the Nightfall papers for decoration.

Nightfall Guest Designer: Valerie Mangan

Screen Shot 2011-10-02 at 10.07.27 AM

The Guest Designer for Nightfall week is Valerie Mangan!

Valeriem-81_o

Tell us a little bit about yourself: I’m a working wife and mom living in New Jersey. I’m always on the lookout for inspiration but my go-to source is my day job, where I work as an interior designer. I find trends in color, pattern, and material that are constantly crossing over into my paper crafts. When I’m not working on a paper project, I love to bake, take pictures, and read about art and design. My favorite items to make are layouts, cards, and mini albums and I would describe my style as clean, linear, and graphic. I love to sew and rarely produce a project that does not have some kind of stitching on it. I've been a fan of American Crafts since my early scrapbooking days and I'm thrilled to have had this opportunity to work with this fun line!

How did you get started scrapbooking: I've always been a scrapbooker. Since I can remember, I've saved little bits and pieces of ephemera and included them in my photo albums. I became serious about the hobby when my first child was born in 2003 and have been going strong ever since.

What is your favorite American Crafts product: Definitely the patterned paper. I love the graphic design and trendy color palettes.

Happy Halloween by Valerie Mangan

This layout will serve as the opening page of the Halloween section of my album for 2010. I love the spider webs on this patterned paper and wanted them to be the focal point. I kept the page simple and linear so that that elements and the black and white photo would be the focus.

Supplies: Rust (71465) - Cardstock, Night Crawler Paper (35509) – Nightfall, Starry Night Paper (35515) – Nightfall, Spells (72015) – Delights, Pumpkin Patch (75054) – Details, Halloween (42204) – Remarks, Thanks (70072) – Flair, Maple Pineapple (53221) - Thickers

Halloween Cards by Valerie Mangan

One of my favorite parts of this line is the addition of the pale blue to the traditional fall colors. For these cards I used simple elements and added that color back in with my stitching.

Supplies: Melon (71033) - Cardstock, Moonlit Night Paper (35510) – Nightfall, Spells (72015) – Delights, Jack-O-Lantern (42206) – Remarks, Pumpkin Patch (75054) – Details, Halloween (42204) – Remarks, Thanks (70072) – Flair, Basic Chalkboard Stickers (42208) - Remarks

Autumn Mini Album by Valerie Mangan

This mini is made from a business card holder that I picked up at Target. The plastic sleeves serve as my page protectors. Each one features a wallet sized photo from last October embellished with Remarks stickers and captions cut from the Fall Fun paper. The stickers, along with the blackboard journaling spots and cut paper, were the perfect flat elements for this project.

Supplies: Moonlit Night Paper (35510) – Nightfall, Autumn Cider Paper (35519) – Nightfall, Fall Fun Paper (35528) – Nightfall, October Night Paper (35514) – Nightfall, Spells (72015) – Delights, Scarecrow (42207) – Remarks, Nightfall Plastic Buttons (85561) – Elements, Pumpkin Patch (75054) – Details, Halloween (42204) – Remarks, Autumn (42205) – Remarks, Thanks (70072) – Flair, Basic Chalkboard Stickers (42208) – Remarks, Harvest (89409) – Premium Ribbon

Me Today by Valerie Mangan

The blackboard paper reminds me of the surface of a magnet board or refrigerator door, so I adhered my elements as if they were tacked onto that kind of surface. The journaling documents some things about me on that particular day – a tiny envelope made from Autumn Harvest paper holds receipts and movie tickets collected that Saturday. I painted the title to mimic chalk on a blackboard and I stitched around the edge to emphasize that cute curly border line.

Ac_crate
Close_up_2

We’re thrilled to announce our purchase of scrapbooking wholesaler Crate Paper!

Crate Paper is known for products featuring its signature distressing/antiquing and cute, accessible designs. Collections include patterned paper, stickers, chipboard, layered embellishments, brads, buttons, and more.

The company was started in 2006 by Lisa and Steve Parkin in Las Vegas and later relocated to Spanish Fork, Utah. Lisa will remain as creative director over the brand to guide new product development and maintain the brand's signature style.

Just like with Studio Calico, we’re excited to welcome Crate Paper to the AC family and look forward to introducing even more spectacular CP lines to craft with!

Retailers, scrapbookers, crafters and cardmakers interested in learning more about Crate Paper can visit www.cratepaper.com. Retailers interested in ordering Crate Paper products can visit www.cratepaper.com/wholesale.html or contact their American Crafts sales rep.

Nightfall Wreath Tutorial by Amy Heller

Amy Heller created an adorable fall wreath that she's going to show us step-by-step how to re-create:

AC_Nightfall_Wreath_AH

Fall Origami Leaf Wreath by Amy Heller

Supplies: Starry Night Paper (35515) - Nightfall, Fall Leaves Paper (35530) - Nightfall, Autumn Feast Paper (35522) - Nightfall, Halloween Night Paper (35507) - Nightfall, Fall Colors Paper (35527) - Nightfall, Autumn Gathering Paper (35524) - Nightfall, Nighfall Plastic Buttons (85561) - Elements, Autumn (42205) - Remarks, Elm Rust (53215)-Elm, Thanks (70072) - Flair, Chestnut (71048) - Cardstock, Chocolate (58451) - Ribbon, Brown Sheer (58605) - Ribbon, Brown Printed Sheer (58410) - Ribbo; Other: Wreath form, sewing machine, brown thread

Amy

BASIC ORIGAMI LEAF

1) Cut your patterned paper into squares. For my wreath I used three sizes of squares: 2.5", 3.5", and 5"

AC_AH_1

2) Turn your preferred pattern, face up, and fold on the diagonal.

AC_AH_2

3) Take the top layer of your triangle and fold the top corner down about 1/3 of the way down. 4) Turn over your paper and do the same thing on the opposite side. 5) Fold up the bottom folded seam up at a slight angle about 1/8 of the way up the side.AC_AH_3

6) Turn the folded piece up on end and open. This is what your finished, basic origami leaf will look like:

  AC_AH_4

ORIGAMI LEAF WITH VEINS

Now, if you'd like to add more dimension, I'm going to show you how to add veins to your leaf. I used this method on my larger leaves and left my smallest leaves basic.

7) Go back to Step 5. With the folded 1/3 down, take the bottom right hand corner and fold it up at the same angle as the folded down triangle at the top of your paper.HINT: Use the bottom piece of paper as your guide to fold in line with that angle, it makes it much easier than guessing. Fold down the seem really well.

AC_AH_5

8) Begin accordion folding all the way down to the end of your point.

AC_AH_6_AH

9) Turn over your completed piece. Accordion fold the top flap, start by folding downwards as shown. When completely folded it will look like this.

AC_AH_7

10) Open up your folded accordions like this. Voila, you have more dimension!

AC_AH_8

11) Complete all of your folding of your leaves in various colors and sizes.

AC_AH_9

I found that when I was creating my wreath it helped tremendously to create clusters of leaves. This way I wasn't fumbling with leaves all over, rather I created a handful of clusters and arranged them as I thought they worked on the wreath form.

AC_AH_11

For even more dimension and texture, once I created my clusters, I added some zig zag stitching to some of the leaves.

AC_AH-12jpg

When my clusters were completed, I arranged them as I wanted then I placed a number on the back of each cluster along with on my wreath form, so I would make sure to know where they were to be placed prior to adhering them to the form. Once I finished adhering, I focused on adorning my wreath with a bow, folded ribbons placed throughout the leaves, and a card that hangs below. It really was an easy and fast wreath to create!

AC_Nightfall_Wreath_AH

If you have time to sit in front of the TV for about half hour you can get all the leaves made during one sitcom! Thanks for joining me today!

American Crafts Partners with Studio Calico

Logos_ac_and_sc2

We’re excited to announce that American Crafts has partnered with Studio Calico to manufacture and distribute their products for scrapbookers, cardmakers, and crafters!

If you’re not familiar with them, Studio Calico products tend to feature slightly distressed or antiqued finishes and sophisticated designs, in contrast to AC’s bright, colorful products. It’s something different, but something very cool. SC has awesome patterned paper, stickers, Mister Huey’s color mists, stamps, Fabrips, and Wood Veneer, among other products.

April Foster, a lifelong crafter, started Studio Calico, and she’ll continue to oversee the development of new products for the brand. She’ll also continue to operate her successful monthly kit club independently of our new partnership.

American Crafts looks forward to making great Studio Calico-brand products for years to come! Welcome to the AC family, Studio Calico!

You can learn more about Studio Calico’s products by visiting www.studiocalico.com. Retailers interested in ordering Studio Calico products online can visit www.americancrafts.com/retailers or www.studiocalicowholesale.com.
