Travelogue: Graphic 45 Goes to Framingham, MA

Hello Crafters!

Well we're back from our amazing trip to the east coast where we attended the Collins Group Event 2011 in Framingham, MA. It was a fabulous trip and we met so many terrific people. It was a great time!  We thought we'd share with you some photos from our trip.

The day before the event, Aimee and Charee had the pleasure of spending the evening in Harvard Square in Boston.  We had an amazing dinner at the Russel Street Tavern, and spent the rest of the night walking around admiring the historic architecture. Here is a great photo taken at sunset. You can really see the hustle and bustle of this amazing historic city.

This is the view outside of the fun castle hotel where the Collins Group event was held. What a great place to hold a crafting event! Even though it didn't have a moat or a dragon, it was still a magical castle of fun.

Last week we posted some pictures on our blog of us creating kits for our big event. Well here are the fruits of our labor. This was a 2 1/2 hour long workshop in which we created a lovely Once Upon A Springtime mini album. This was the first class created and taught by Charee. You can see all these terrific ladies are working the night away to create Charee's amazing mini album. It was a fantastic time and we were so happy to share it with so many amazing people.

Here is Charee just after we set up our mini booth for the last day of the event.  Getting ready for a day of good quality bonding time with our stores.

Well, that's it for today, crafters. Thanks so much for joining us as we recap our travels. We want to thank the fabulous folks at The Collins Group for a terrific event, as well as all the terrific stores, and all the great folks who participated in our workshop, class, and make n' take. We had an amazing time!

Don't forget to post your Metal Staples crafts on our Facebook Fan Page for your chance to win our Metal Staples Challenge. We also have our blog contest going on right now. Post your thank you cards and/or friendship cards to our Facebook Fan Page for your chance to win this week's blog contest! We will see you back here tomorrow when we announce the brand new Graphic 45 Design Team for 2011! We are so excited!

Happy Papercrafting!

Spring Wisdom: Beautiful Altered Art by Tammy Roberts

Hello Crafters!

Thank you so much for joining us today! We have such an amazing craft project to share with you. In honor of Spring, Tammy Roberts of our design team has created a beautiful altered object with our Once Upon a Springtime collection. We're sure you'll love this adorable and inspiring piece. Once Upon a Springtime is obviously the perfect collection for this time of year. The trees are finally starting to bud with flowers, the warm weather is steadily creeping back, and nature just seems to be in a much better mood these days. I love the very beginning of Spring because there is so much excitement in the air just before everything blossoms with color. It's like being at the top of a roller coaster just before it begins its decent. I'm actually not a huge fan of roller coasters but I couldn't think of a better metaphor. Anyway, it's a beautiful moment in the year, full of so much energy and potential.

Crafting is a lot like early Spring. When you lay out your papers and supplies, there is so much wonder and curiosity. What will your project look like when you're finished? What directs will it take? Will the final outcome be what you expected? Will it be better than you expected? There are so many exciting questions that circle through one's head when you begin working on a project. It's such a spectacular moment for all of us artists, so full of life. With all that in mind, have a look at this amazing Altered Wisdom Girl by Tammy Roberts. From the moment she saw this sweet little angel, her mind began swirling with ideas. The result is this wonderful work of art.

"I found this angel girl at a gift shop and I knew instantly I had to have it! I envisioned a new angel covered in "Once Upon a Springtime"! I turned her into what I am calling my "Wisdom Girl". I printed out some inspirational word strips and made that my focus. I will set her on my work table to give me that daily up lift!" -Tammy Roberts

Today's first craft was created by Tracey Locher of our Design Team. She used the amazingly fun Core'dinations Sandable Card stock in conjunction with our Steampunk Debutant paper collection and Staples. I love how simple this LO is and yet it completely catches the eye. The use of open space in LOs is an underestimated and high effective method in creating a beautiful LO. While I also love a busy LO with lots of tiny details and layers, I also adore the minimalist beauty of an LO like Tracey's. It's elegant, balanced, and sincere. A true craft treasure.

KKrieger

"I fell into scrapbooking by accident about four and a half years ago. I had never been what you would call a "crafty" person, but I have always been very interested in art and photography. I took art classes at a studio near my home & started shooting with my first SLR camera when I was fifteen. When I got engaged, my mom {not a crafter herself} gave me one of those scrapbook kits that has everything in it you need to create a themed 12"x12" album. I put it away at the bottom of my linen closet and forgot all about it until the Fall of 2006 when my husband and I were combining our households after our wedding. I found the kit again, and decided I'd better complete it or one day I would be in trouble with my mom! I didn't ever expect to enjoy scrapbooking so much, but I am thrilled to have found a hobby that combines my love for photography and my love for art. And I eventually got my mom into scrapbooking, too. The thing that I love most about papercrafting is cutting up paper and using it to embellish my pages and create interactive elements. I find that the large, gorgeous images on Graphic 45's papers lend themselves so well to this particular type of scrapbooking. I love to cut out these images, alter them with inks, mists and other mediums, and then layer them to create embellishment clusters, tags, pockets and other interactive elements for my scrapbook pages. For someone who loves nothing better than to cut up paper, the Graphic collections are perfect!" -Kathryn from Life on the {Scrap} Beach

We thought we'd start our tour of Kathryn's work with some of her fantastic videos and tutorials. Here is her Policy Envelope Pocket Tutorial that coincides with the amazing Steampunk Debutant 8x8 album that we're also featuring below. Enjoy!

And here we have Kathryn's video of her gorgeous Steampunk Debutant 8x8 mini album! Here she takes us on a page-by-page tour of her beautiful creation. We also have some fabulous photos of this album for you to enjoy as well! Soak in the crafting splendor!

The Magic of Printer's Trays: Crafts by Jane Tragenza & Gloria Stengel

Hello Crafters!

A very happy crafty Tuesday to all of you! As I write this, the sun is shining and there is a cherry blossom tree in full bloom outside my window! Oh, glorious spring! Nature is about to unfurl some serious beauty! We have some equally serious beauty to show you today with some amazing printer's tray crafts by Jane Tragenza and Gloria Stengel. These talented ladies have designed these fantastic works of art which are sure to inspire smiles and creativity. Printers trays are wonderful and amazingly fun to work with. They also make phenomenal personalized gifts and stunning home decor! Just imagine the possibilities! This first craft was created by the wonderful Jane Trangeza using our Once Upon a Springtime collection. This amazing piece is both heart warming and gorgeous. Here is what Jane had to say about this beautiful creation.

The Once upon a Springtime Shadow frame

"I used the Once Upon a Springtime 8x8 Paper Pad.  This gave me all the papers with the prints smaller, which is perfect for small off the page projects. I used Chipboard from Imaginarium Designs, some of which  I inked black -  the little girls and all the corners. The fence and childhood memories,  I painted white and then put a Tim Holtz paint dapper over it for the salmon pink colour to match the papers. I used a vine from prima, ribbons from Vandoros and Maya Road. The shadow box is one from 7 Gypsies. I did this project for my niece, I have a sister who is 19 years younger than me. I love the softness of this collection and the 8x8 pads are a plus for those of us who like small projects and miniature pieces." -Jane Tragenza

Next up is another mind-blowing printer's tray creation by Gloria Stengel. Gloria combined our Steampunk DebutantCurtain Call, and Communique  collections to create this wonderful work. There are so many stunning little details here but it also looks amazing as a whole. That's one of the great aspects of printer's trays, and Gloria has captured the magic beautifully in this piece! And she's also included a "how to" guide so you can create your own! How awesome is that? Behold, Gloria Stengel's awe-inspiring printer's tray wall hanging.
Printer's Tray Wall Hanging

"Printer's trays and shadow boxes are all the rage right now. I have been wanting to make a tray for a long time now, but they are a lot of work and I've not had a large block of time to spend working on such a project. However, I was able to attend a 4-day scrapbook retreat recently and spent one entire day working on my tray! Each item in the try has some meaning for me, from the large G (which stands for Gloria) to the bingo number 29 (which is how old I "think" I am)". -Gloria Stengel

How to:
The inspiration for the tray came from the dress form embellishment I made. Here is how to make it.

1. Cut a dress from out of black chipboard using the Tim Holtz Sewing Room die (or similar).
2. Paper piece the top of the dress from using Graphic45 papers. I cut a notch in the top of the paper dress to create a collar, then added a paper rose for decoration. I also added a pearl to the top of the dress form.
3. Cut a birdcage out of black chipboard and Graphic45 paper. I used the Tim Holtz birdcage die.
4. Trim down the birdcage shape to create a hoop for the dress form. I cut off the top, bottom, and 2 of the cage bars to make the birdcage smaller to match the size of the dress form die cut.
5. Decorate the hoop with Graphic45 paper, lace, and metal embellishments, then attach it to the dress form with strong glue.
6. Attach wings to the back of the dress form. I used Maya Road chipboard wings, which I sprayed with glimmer mistand sparkling paints. I created a mist with twinkling H2O paints and water to give the wings a "super shimmer"!
7. Glue your Steampunk dress form to your tray and enjoy!

Supplies:

Printer's Tray: 7Gypsies
Graphic45 paper: Curtain Call ( Top Billing, The Cinema, All that Jazz, Applause), Steampunk Debutante (Eclectic Emporium, Fantasy Floral, Mechanical Mind, Time Warp, Nouveau Artistry, Steampunk Debutante, Ephemera Extraordinaire), Communique (A Fine Specimen, Communique)

Stamps: Tim Holtz Odds and Ends
Ink: Ranger Distress Vintage Photo, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist Peach Delight, Twinkling H2O Sunburst

This week we asked you to comment on Monday's blog and tell us something that you love about spring. This was a simple but fun contest and everyone had such terrific comments. This week's random winner is dlwidder. Here is what she had to say about looking forward to spring:

"Since we have a rather small house for such a large family, Spring, for me means the kids can finally play outside again. This makes me and the kids soooo much happier! :-D" -dlwidder

Fairies and Friends: Once Upon a Springtime Crafts By Tracey Locher

Hello Out There In Craft Land!

Happy Thursday to you all! Thank you for stopping by and seeing what's new in the fun world of Graphic 45. Spring is on its way and I'm so excited! I realize that we do have a lot of international readers in the southern hemisphere for whom summer is slowly winding down. No matter where you live, there's a lot of transition going on with the weather right now. These transitional times can sometimes feel tenuous as we leave one extreme (either hot or cold weather) and ease into another. These in between times are glorious opportunities for creative thinking and artistic expression. Transition can help us break out of old routines and look forward to new ideas and goals. It keeps us thinking ahead. With that in mind, we thought we'd bring you some beautiful Once Upon a Springtime crafts by Tracey Locher to help inspire you in this time of change.

I for one have made a personal goal to treat myself to a bouquet of flowers every now and then throughout the spring. I'm always making excuses as to why I shouldn't buy something that will fade away within a week or so. But I also realize that it's really important to treat yourself to something special, even if its small, on a regular basis. This can take many forms, like buying yourself some flowers, taking a couple of hours our of your busy week to spend time making art, taking a leisurely walk on a sunny day, etc. There are so many little ways we can take care of ourselves and it really does help to make us more patient and compassionate in our daily lives. Anyway, enough of my musings on spring and transitions. Lets get to the crafts! Here is a gorgeous layout that Tracey Locher made with Once Upon a Springtime. There are so many amazing textures and wonderful sentiments in this LO. It's just so pretty!

And who doesn't love a wonderful Thank You card? Check out the dazzling textures in this great Once Upon a Springtime card by Tracey. Do you think the fairy is thanking the frog? Or is the frog thanking the fairy? Either way there's gratitude all over this card! It's just amazing!

Victorian Visions: Steampunk Debutant Creations by Gloria Stengel and Jenny Svensson

Hello Crafters!

Thank you so much for joining us today! You are in store for such a treat! Today's crafts are so unfathomably amazing, I don't think the English language will do them justice! For days like these, I think we should hire a poet to write the Graphic 45 blog. This entire post should be one long love poem to the talented ladies who created these gorgeous works of art. But alas, I'm no scholar. I shall try my best to give these amazing products the prose they deserve. Today's creations, by Gloria Stengel and Jenny Svensson, were made using our Steampunk Debutant collection. This hypnotizing and decadent paper collection is full of deep, romantic colors and whimsical images. The crafting possibilities are endless!

Have a look at this classic and elegant layout by Gloria Stengel. I love the amazing central image she used in this LO. The contrast of the soft black and white photo against the deep color of Seampunk is so amazing! Two world collide in this ravishing LO and the result is pure paper goodness! Amazing work, Gloria!

Mary Popovich - 12x12 Layout

Supplies:

Cardstock - Bazzill
Designer Paper - Graphic45 Steampunk Debutante (Fantasy Floral, Time Flies, Steampunk Debutante, Tags)
Punches - Martha Stewart
Pearls - Prima
Ink - Ranger Distress (Vintage Photo, Old Paper)
Adhesive - Scotch 3M (foam tape, double-sided tape)

This next creation by Jenny Svensson is so amazing, I can't even believe it! It's a Steampunk Debutant Paper Mansion! A few months back we featured a little Fairy House that Jenny made with our Once Upon a Springtime collection. Well, she's taken it up a notch by creating a mansion! This totally blows my mind! You really have to look closely at all of these pictures to get the full scope of how brilliant this is. There are so many intricate details in this house. I can't imagine how much time this must have taken. I have to say, it was well worth it because this is a total craft masterpiece! Jenny was even kind enough to write explanations for each of these pictures! Jenny, you are amazing! Okay Crafters, lets take a tour of the Steampunk Mansion.

Jenny_march_mansion01

Welcome to the Steampunk Mansion!: By Jenny Svensson

This idea has grown on me for quite some time. You see, my seven-year-old son is quite the little inventor, and I have used the Steampunk Debutante collection over and over again to make things for him and about him, and I have quite a fair idea what his house would look like if he could decide for himself. I have been thinking a lot about making him a proper Steampunk house. I can without a doubt say that Steampunk Debutante is, and remains until further notice, my favourite Graphic 45 collection, and the ladies at Graphic 45 have been kind enough to send me so many Steampunk papers I can literally swim in them, and thus I finally had enough to realize my dream Steampunk project. So, here it is, the Steampunk Mansion.

Jenny_march_mansion02

Here I have used a Sizzix/Tim Holts Alterations die to make a dormer window. It took quite a lot of figuring out how to get this right, but in the end it turned out pretty OK. Well, it’s not as if I’m thinking of starting a brand new career as an architect, but seeing the pieces finally come together is great. I may call myself a “paper architect” from now on. LOL. The roof tiling is made from various Steampunk papers, all punched out with the Fiskars “Seal of Approval” squeeze punch, cut in half an inked.

Jenny_march_mansion03

I have decorated the house with various metal items, and a lot of gears and other clock parts, which I was lucky enough to stumble across at the thrift shop.

Jenny_march_mansion04

Here’s the front porch roof at an angle. Here you can see how I’ve put the house together with the little cardstock “tiles” in the corners. Thanks to this technique, I could give the house the whimsy, slightly bent shape I was after.

Jenny_march_mansion05

This here is my take on a Steampunk weather vane.

Jenny_march_mansion06

Of course, the house is complete with an interior. I’m not only a paper architect, but a paper-interior-decorator as well! LOL. It has five rooms all in all, and although my son would have wished that he would be able to rearrange the furnishing, it is all firmly glued in place.

Jenny_march_mansion07
Here’s the genious’ attic study. It must be an extremely messy person working in here. Just look at how he has spread his drawings all over his desk and the floor... I’m especially proud of the little lamp in the window. I’s made from a piece of a metal badge (my son has a badge-maker, so I “”borrowed” some of his stash) and a ball chain that came attached to a pair of jeans I got for him. The basket is woven from hemp cord and steel wire, and the chair is made from clock parts and chipboard.

Jenny_march_mansion08
Here’s another lamp, just like the one on the Steampunk tag sheet. I’ve used the actual wings from the tag, and glued them onto a tiny light bulb I had in my stash. Oh, and wouldn’t this paper make the coolest wallpaper? I would definitely put it up in my son’s room if it were available as such. We are moving to a new house in a not too distant future, and the room he will be getting is an attic room, a little like this room with sloped ceiling, so it would be perfect up there!

Jenny_march_mansion09

Here’s the library, complete with a grog-table, cosy armchair (well, it’s not that soft really), crystal chandelier and grandfather’s clock.

Jenny_march_mansion10

There is also a book shelf in here, of course. It’s made from a small wooden box, which has contained miniature Easter eggs, thence the small compartments, which turned out to be the perfect book shelf size! The books are small pieces of cardboard, covered with patterned papers.

Jenny_march_mansion11

Here is the bedroom, with the little Steampunk bed. It looks a lot more comfortable than the armchair, doesn’t it? The little alarm clock on the bedside table is made from a metal button, a clock face from one of the Steampunk papers, and tiny copper beads.

Jenny_march_mansion12

Every bedroom needs a dresser, and this one is made from matchboxes, cut in half and placed on top of one another. You can open all the drawers on this one.

Jenny_march_mansion13

Here’s the entrance. Someone hung a bag there, made from a crumpled-up Steampunk tag.

Jenny_march_mansion14
Here’s the kitchen. The sink took me quite some time to finish. It’s made from chipboard, which I glued together to form a little box, and then I covered it in white Enamel Accent to make it look like a porcelain sink (yeah, you can tell I’m thinking a lot about kitchens right now. We are renovating a house, and I have big plans for my airy country kitchen, and I suppose some of it rubbed off on this one...) and then I made a tap from very thick steel wire. The bowls on the counter, as well as the lampshades, are parts of a bracelet of mine that I was wearing one night while I was working on the house. That bracelet doesn’t exist any more, but well, some things just have to be sacrificed in the name of one’s hobby, right? -Jenny Svensson
Supplies:

Graphic 45: Steampunk Debutante – 12X12 paper pad, 8X8 paper pad
Ranger: Glossy Accents, Crackle Accents, Enamel Accents, Distress Ink Walnut Stain and Distress Crackle Paint Rock candy.
Bazzill Basics: Cardstock
Tattered Angels: Chipboard clock frame
Various ribbons, lace, metal parts, beads and decorations from stash.
Tons and tons of glue!

We want to profusely thank Gloria Stengel and Jenny Svnesson for today's magnificent crafts. We hope they helped inspire all of you. Don't forget to leave a comment on Monday's blog for your chance to win this week's blog prize. Have a fabulous Wednesday, crafters!

The central photo she used is so beautiful and it looks just perfect when framed the splashes of colors and playful patterns of Le Cirque. I also love that black May Arts ribbon with the chipboard and frilly flowers dancing on it. Everything about this LO is so stunning.

Paper BFF: Amazing Craft Creations by Jenny Svensson

Hello Crafters!

Happy Tuesday and welcome to another day of craft love here at the Graphic 45 blog. We are so pleased you are joining us because today's crafts are not to be missed! Jenny Svensson, one of our amazingly talented design team members, has created three stunning projects that will knock your socks off! These beautiful craft creations were made with our three newest paper collections Once Upon a Springtime, Le Cirque, and Curtain Call. These exquisite gems are great examples of the dynamic range of projects you can create with our papers. Jenny's projects are always so stunning and it's such a treat to share these three works of art with you today. We hope they will help brighten your day as much as they have brightened ours. Okay, enough talk. Lets get to the crafts! Here is a pretty card that Jenny created using Once Upon a Springtime!

Girl's Night Out Card

Supplies:
Graphic 45: Once Upon a Springtime 8X8” Paper Pads
Hampton Art: Vintage Ladies stamps
Tombow: Markers
October Afternoon: Letter Stickers
Ribbon from Stash

"This is a super-quick and easy little card made with wonderful Once Upon a Springtime papers, and a beautiful Hampton Art stamp." Jenny Svennson

Now have a look at this amazing layout featuring Le Cirque! It's like an explosion of beauty with lots of fun details and vibrant colors! And the featured photos in this layout are absolutely perfect!

At the Circus Layout

Jenny_february_circus

Supplies:
Graphic 45: Le Cirque “Under the Big Top”, “Circus Parade”, “Wizards of Wonders”, Borders and Tags.
American Crafts: Thickers
Flowers and brads from stash

"Once every year, one of Sweden’s biggest circuses pass through our area, and it has become a tradition for my family to go to the show. It’s complete with daring acrobats, funny clowns, elephants, horses, jugglers, you name it. The children love to watch all the fantabulous acts, and to get close to the circus animals in the pause. These photos were taken two years ago, when my son persuaded me to let him ride the camel although I thought it was insanely expensive. I had finally managed to learn my camera well enough to get some decent shots inside that gloomy tent, and I have been saving them up for the right paper line to come along. So, guess if I was happy when I got my hands on Le Cirque!" -Jenny Svensson

We know you'll just love this elegant card that Jenny made with out Curtain Call collection. It's like a vintage dream! Is there any better way to let someone know that they are your BFF? I think not! "Gorgeous" is the only word I can think of to describe this card. In fact, I feel like I need to invent a new word because "gorgeous" doesn't quite do this card justice! It's so pretty, I'm speechless (for once)!

BFF Card

Supplies:
Graphic 45: Curtain CallAll That Jazz”, “Mulin Rouge”, Borders and Tags.

"I especially love the ”All That Jazz” paper from the Curtain Call collection, because it is perfect for cardmaking! I was also thrilled to see how well the Hampton Arts Vintage Ladies stamps coordinate with this line. A perfect match!" -Jenny Svennson

Mechanical Mind: The Art of Steampunk by Candy Rosenberg

Hello Crafters!

How is everyone today? We're so glad you could join us for another fun day at the Graphic 45 blog. Today we've got a fantastically fun project by the amazing Candy Rosenberg. Candy has whipped up a delightful mixed media project with our Steampunk Debutant collection that is to die for! It's been a while since we've had a Streampunk Debutant project featured on the blog and I'm really excited about this one. Steampunk Debutant is one of my personal favorites. If my brain had a color scheme, it would look just like Steampunk Debutant. Candy's project is amazing, not just because it's so beautiful, but because of its great utilization of mixed media. There are so many amazing details both large and small. So have a look at this big, beautiful piece of craft art! It's hypnotizing!

Steampunkcanvas_graphic45_crosenberg

Steampunkcanvas_g45closeup_crosenberg

I {HEART} Steampunk Canvas

"I made this mult-layered and textured mixed media canvas using the Steampunk Debutante papers and vintage fabric.  Using gesso to create a three dimensional texture, I then layered vintage fabric then added Imaginarium Design die cuts, gears, hand dyed fabric and ribbon on the dress form.  The dress form has a little corset made out of paper.  Then I painted the canvas all around with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze. This was a lot of fun to create and is the first time I have used all these things together in one project." -Candy Rosenberg

Supplies:

Graphic45: Steampunk Debutante
Teresa Collins Design: Paper
Imaginarium Designs: Gear Heart, Bike, Fence, Frame and Gears
Spellbinders: Nestabilities
Tattered Angels: Glimmer Glaze
Metal Elements: Blue Moon, Tim Holtz, Stanislaus Imports
Copic Markers

Well crafters, that's it for today. Please join us tomorrow when we announce this week's blog prize winner along with the 25 finalists of for our Design Team Call. It's going to be a very exciting day, indeed! Many thanks to Candy Rosenberg for her gorgeous work as always.

Have a lovely day!

That central image of a gorgeous Billie Holiday is so iconic. It looks perfect in the middle of this amazing LP. It makes me want to put on some classic jazz right this second!
