Fun and Inspirational Book Tutorial By Jane Tregenza: Part 1

A-ladies-diary

Hello G45ers,

Welcome to our happy blog on this fine Tuesday! We are thrilled that you are joining us for another day of fun and inspiration! We have something amazing planned for you today! Jane Tregenza of the Graphic 45 design team has prepared the first part of her amazing book-making tutorial! You've probably seen Jane's incredible books here on the Graphic 45 blog over the years. These amazing books often contain gorgeous paper layering, inking, pop-up elements, and imaginative uses of beautiful embellishments. Every page is overflowing with beauty. We're teaming up with Jane to bring you this very special tutorial series on the last Tuesday of every month. Beginning today, Jane will be taking you step-by-step through the book-making process. Follow her wonderful instructions in this monthly tutorial series to create your very own gorgeous book! Today Jane will show you how to make the foundation pages that are used for each page of the book. You'll also learn how to create the first page of the book as well as the mini book that goes with it! This is going to be an amazing journey! So lets begin! Here is the first part of Jane's tutorial where you'll learn how to make the foundation pages. Take it away, Jane!

Instructions for creating a foundation page:

Each month you will need to make a foundation page. For this you will need two black cardstock.

Cut one to 8 ½ x11 inches- set it aside, cut your second one to 9 1/2 x 11 inches.

DSC_0024

The 9 1/2 x 11 inches piece needs to be scored, place it in your cutter at 8 1/2 inch mark and score it, this will give you a one inch seam.

DSC_0025

Completely fill in the one inch seam with strong tape.

DSC_0026

Carefully adhere the 8 1/2 inch piece onto the 9 1/2 inches piece. Make sure you don’t go
over your scored seam, or your page will not fold. Once you have it on, carefully fold the page over
to check that it will shut.

DSC_0028

Press firmly along the folded over piece, open up your page and check at the two pages line up
nicely. Don’t worry if one of your pages is now wider than the other. You can trim it back to make
them the same.

DSC_0031

You need to add some more tape along the join of your foundation page. Adhere one strip of tape
along one side of the join and about an inch of tape on the other side of the join.

DSC_0034

A close up of the join with the tape on each side. When you come to adhere your print papers, one
piece will be an inch wider that the other page. The extra inch will need to be adhered over the top
of the inch of tape on the foundation page.

Now that you've got your foundation page ready, it's time to create the first page of the book!

1st Page .- A Ladies Diary.

A page for about us.

DSC_0139

Instructions for creating your 1st page.

Please follow the instructions carefully, lots of the papers are used in the mini book as well as for your page, so you need to cut them the way I describe or you will run out of paper! All chipboard has been sprayed black. All papers have had their edges inked.

Please note, I am only human and do make mistakes, I have taken every care while writing the instructions, and hope they make sense. It is quite hard to write instructions as I know what I mean; but this does not always translate into the instructions. If you are unable to work something out, then please ask a question in the comments box at the end of the post and I will answer it for you as best I can.

Supplies:

Graphic 45 Print Paper
2x Afternoon Tea
1x Fashion Plate
1x Timeless Memoir
1 ½ x Ageless Beauty
½ x Lasting impressions
1x Delicate Details
1x Focal Point
1x Moment in time
Imaginarium Designs – Chipboard Mini Clock, phrase, corners and mini alpha's
Tim Holtz Distress ink – Vintage photo
Imaginarium Designs Sponging block or Tim Holtz ink applicator
Color Box Fluid Chalk-chestnut roan
Brads
Ribbon
Flowers
2 ½ sheets black cardstock
3L 12x12 Adhesive sheets
Photo Corners
Wet Glue

From your first sheet of Afternoon Tea print paper cut a piece 8 ¼ x 10 ¾ inches. Please cut the 10 ¾ inch measurement first then cut it back to 8 ¼ inches. Keep the leftover pieces for your Mini Book

Cut your second sheet of Afternoon Tea print paper to 9 ¼ x 10 ¾ inches. Please cut the 10 ¾ inch measurement first then cut it back to 9 ¼ inches. Keep the leftover pieces for your Mini Book.

DSC_0035

You need to completely cover the back of both print papers with adhesive. You can use double sided adhesive paper or tape, if you use tape make sure you butt it together with no gaps in between each piece.

  DSC_0038

Adhere the 9 ¼ inch wide piece to your black foundation page. Try and have the same amount of black showing along the top and bottom on your page. Remember this print paper is one inch wider, so it will go over the join on your foundation page onto the other page. You should have tape on your foundation page to help adhere your print paper over the join. Don’t worry if your print paper is not on straight. You are going to add a border around the page.

DSC_0040

Carefully fold your page over, use your finger to run along the seam as you fold the page up and over.

DSC_0041

Fold the whole page over and run your hand firmly along the fold to set the crease.

DSC_0043

You need to adhere your 8 ¼ x 10 ¾ inch piece. Make sure you are away from the centre fold of your page or you page will not shut nicely. To make it easier for yourself, don’t remove all the backing from your adhesive paper or tape. Just take a little strip off. Then if you don’t quite line it up right you can lift it off and try again. Don’t worry about lining up the spots; it is not really that important.

DSC_0045

From your sheet of Fashion Plates print paper, cut five 1 inch strips from the left edge of your paper and one from the right edge, save the bit in the middle for your Mini Book. (We need the top image for a page and the rest for a mat).. You will have six 1 inch strips, turn them over and ink the edges with chestnut roan ink.

  DSC_0047

From our sheet of Ageless Beauty print paper, cut the top right image and put it aside for your Mini Book. Turn your print over; we will be cutting 6 strips from it.

DSC_0051

You need to cut 6 strips from your Ageless Beauty print paper. Each one needs to be about ¾ inches wide. Use the above photo as a guide. Each one needs to be the same width, so make sure you can line each one up to make them all the same. Don’t forget to ink the edges.

DSC_0055

Now you need to adhere each piece on top of your Fashion Plate print paper strips. Make sure your Ageless Beauty strips end up in the middle with the same amount of Fashion Plate print showing top and bottom.

DSC_0056

You should have six pieces ready to make your frame around the page.

DSC_0058

Place one of your strips on your page, leave a little bit of the black foundation page showing. Adhere it in the middle with just a little bit of tape. Place a second strip on your page again with a little bit of tape. Leave the ends of the strips hanging over your page. You will trim them off later. If you mess up a corner the extra length still attached will let you do the corner again if you need to.

DSC_0060

Place a ruler diagonally across the corner and over the strips. Line up the ruler with the inside point where the papers cross and where the papers cross at the outer corner. Draw a line with a pencil.

DSC_0061

Following the pencil line, cut diagonally across the top strip only.

  DSC_0062

Place the top strip down and run a pencil along the diagonal cut edge.

  DSC_0064

Fold the top strip out of the way and cut the bottom one following the pencil line.

  DSC_0065

Line both corners up and check that they meet, you can adjust them if they don’t. If they are way out, move one strip down a little bit and do it again. Once you are happy with your corner, repeat for the other three corners.

DSC_0071

All four corners should look like this. Don’t worry if your corners don’t line up perfectly. Mine didn’t that’s why I used Imaginarium Designs chipboard corners over the top.

DSC_0072

Before you attach each strip border, you need to cut them back in the middle where they go over the centre fold of your page. They will need to overlap in the middle of your book. The bottom strip needs to go over the fold in the middle of your book by about an inch. The strip border, which goes over the top, needs to be cut away from the fold. If you are too close to the fold of your page with your top strip, your page will not close and your border will start to lift off. Now you can lift all 6 pieces off and adhere them back down with tape. Hopefully your corners will still meet. Remember the chipboard corners will help to hide any gaps. Your finished page should look like the page above. Now we can start decorating your page.

DSC_0120

From a piece of your left over black cardstock, cut a piece to be 3 ¼ inches wide and 8 ¼ long. From a piece of Focal Point print paper, (you need to cut it from the bottom of your paper and not the side). Cut a piece 3 x 8 inches and adhere it to the black bazzil. Keep the rest of this sheet as you need it for your mini book. From your sheet of Timeless Memoir print paper cut a piece, 2 ¾ x 7 ¾ inches wide. Ink around the edges and adhere it to your Focal Point print paper.  Adhere it to your page using the above photo as  a  guide. Place 4 gold brads in the corners of your Timeless Memoir print paper. From your ½ sheet of Fashion Plate print paper, cut a piece 4 ¾ x 6 ¾ , cut a piece of black cardstock 4 ¼ x 6 ¼  and adhere it to the middle of your Fashion Plate print paper. Cut another piece of black cardstock to 5 x 7 inches and adhere the Fashion Plate piece to it. This will give you a triple mat for your photo. Add it to your page, using the photo as a guide.

DSC_0137

To finish your page, cut a border piece from Lasting Impressions print paper, it needs to be 6 inches long. I used the ladies with the hats. Adhere it over your photo. Layer three flowers and attach it to your page with a gold brad. Ink some chipboard letters black and add your name.

Add 4 black chipboard corners to finish your page.

Now that we have our first page done it's time to create the mini book!

Mini book for 1st Page

Instructions for creating your Mini Book.

Please follow my instructions carefully, as you will need the left over bits.

To make the mini Book you need to cut three pieces of print papers. It is important that you follow my instructions and cut them the same way I have. You need all the left over bits for inside the mini book.

  1. Moment in Time Print Paper- cut it 8 inches high and 10 inches wide. Cut the 8 inch measurement first. To do this you will need to place the print in your paper trimmer sideways. Once it is 8 inches, take it out and turn it once. Put it in your trimmer and cut to be 10 inches wide.
  2. Delicate Details Print Paper- cut it 8 inches high and 10 inches wide. Cut the 8 inch measurement first. To do this you will need to place the print in your paper trimmer sideways. Once it is 8 inches, take it out and turn it once. Put it in your trimmer and cut to be 10 inches wide.
  3. Focal Point Print Paper- cut it to 7 ½ x 9 ½ inches. Cut the 7 ½ inch measurement first. To do this you will need to place the print in your paper trimmer sideways. Once it is 7 ½ inches, take it out and turn it once. Put it in your trimmer and cut it to be 9 ½ inch wide.

Two of these pieces are the same size, one is smaller. The smaller one will be going in the middle of our book. Each page is adhered to the back of one of the others.

DSC_0074

Using Tim Holtz Distress ink and a sponging block carefully ink around all the edges of your three print pieces, both sides.

DSC_0075

A Moment in Time.

Fold all three pieces in half, so they stay the 8 inches and 7 ½ inches high but are only 5 inches or 3 3/4 inches wide.

DSC_0076

Repeat with your piece of Delicate details print paper.

DSC_0080

Focal point

This middle one is smaller than the other two.

  DSC_0083

Place tape on the stripe side of your folded Focal Point page. Don’t remove the backing from the tape yet.

Now here is the “tricky part”. We have to adhere each one on top of the other. Make sure you keep your print paper the right way up, so you don’t end up with one page upside down.

DSC_0087

Remove a little of the tape backing from the stripe side of your Focal Point page. Line it up with the Delicate Details page along the folded edge. Remember Focal Point is smaller than this piece, so make sure you have the same amount of Delicate Details showing top and bottom.

Remove a little of the backing from the stripe side and adhere Moment in Time over the top, making sure the folded edges line up, and the top and bottom match with Delicate Details underneath . Once you have done this, open up your book and check that the three pages all line up and each page lays flat. If you are happy with it, remove the rest of the backing from the tape and stick Focal Point to the other two pages.

DSC_0091

Your finished mini book should look like this. Now you can start decorating each page. You need all your scraps, including the left over bits from your page and black cardstock.

DSC_0141

Use your image from your Ageless Beauty print paper. Find your left over bit of Fashion Plate print paper, remove the top image square from it first, then mat your Ageless Beauty image onto the left over piece. You still need to get two ¾ inch wide x 6 inch strips from it for your third page. Adhere a piece of ribbon across the front of the image and wrap the ends around to the back and adhere them down.

DSC_0095

Punch a flower from your left over Afternoon Tea print paper (dot side). Choose two paper flowers, glue the bigger one to the middle of your punched flower then glue the smaller flower into the middle. Find a small diamante buckle. Choose a piece of organza ribbon and tie it in the middle of the buckle with a knot. Trim the ends and glue it into the middle of your small flower. Place the finished flower over the top of the ribbon. Add a chipboard phrase inked black. Adhere it to the front of your mini book.

  DSC_0103

DSC_0131

Inside First Page.

From your left over bits, cut a rectangle from the Delicate Details print paper. It needs to be 4 inches wide and 7 inches long. Ink around the edges. Don’t stick it to your page yet. You are going to work on it and once it is finished then you will stick it to your page.  From your left over bit of the Moment in Time print paper, cut a rectangle 3 inches x 4 inches. Ink around the edges and adhere it to your yellow spot, use the above photo as a guide. Cut a strip of Focal Point print paper, 1 inch wide x 5 inches long. Make sure the stripes are running vertically. Adhere it over the top about an inch up from the bottom of your yellow spot. Wrap the ends around to the back and tape them down. Adhere a piece of black ribbon over the top of your stripes and wrap the ends around to the back and tape them down. Choose two paper flowers of your choice. Ink an Imaginarium Designs mini chipboard clock black and glue it to the middle of the biggest flower. Glue the smaller flower in the middle. Use a pearl brad to attach the finished piece to your spot rectangle. Add four photo corners. Once this is finished, you can adhere it to the left side of your 1st page. Cut a photo mat 4 inches x 6 inches and adhere it to the other side of your page

Add a photo to finish. I have left a space above the flower and clock on the left side of the page for your journaling.

DSC_0101

DSC_0135

Second Page

From your left over pieces of Moment in Time print paper, cut two pieces 4 inches x 4 ½ inches. Ink around both pieces and adhere them to your pages. Cut a square of Delicate Details print paper (spot side) to 3 ½ inches x 5 inches. Mat it onto a piece of your black cardstock. From your left over piece of Fashion Plate print paper cut the top image out leaving a little bit of the pink all the way around. Adhere it to your piece of yellow spots. From your ½ sheet of Lasting Impressions print paper, cut out a piece of the lace border and add it to your page. Use the above photo as a guide. Add four photo corners and place the finished piece to your page on the right side as shown in the photo. Cut a piece of black cardstock to 4 inches x 6 inches and adhere it to the left side of your page. Add a photo to finish the page.

DSC_0123

DSC_0133

Third Page

From your left over pieces of Afternoon Tea print paper, cut two pieces of 3 inches x 4 ½ inches. Ink around the edges of each piece and adhere them to your page. Cut two pieces of Fashion Plate print paper, ¾ of an inch wide x 4 ½ inches long. Adhere it to your page as shown. Cut two squares of Focal Point print paper, make sure the stripes are the right way; they need to be 1 ½ inches x 6 inches. Adhere them to your page as shown. Add photo corners to the top. Cut two pieces of Focal Point print paper to 1 ½ x 3 inches, ink around all the edges and adhere them to your page. Punch four paper flowers from your left over Afternoon Tea print paper, glue two together and add a smaller paper flower to the middle. Push a gold split pin in the middle and glue the finished flower to your page. From your ½ sheet of Lasting Impression print paper, cut two postage stamps (the ladies) and add one to each page. Use the above photo as a guide. Cut two photo mats to 3 ¾ inches x 4 inches and adhere them onto your page. .  Add your photo to finish the page.

This finished book needs to be adhered to the right side of your page.

About Anne Rostad:

"I have two wonderful grow up boys that live near by me and they bring so much joy and happiness into my life. Crafting has always been a big part of my life. In child school I asked to be with the boys in handywork class because they could make all sorts of things out of wood, clay and other existing materials. I think it was then that I got inspired to try different crafting methods and experiment with different materials.  I started with paper crafting for about 3-4 years ago and I am totally engrossed and dependent on this hobby. It all started when i saw some cards made of papers on YouTube. I fell in love with this new (for me) hobby. About 2 yeas ago I saw some mini albums and tutorials on how to make them on YouTube. It was so inspiring and since then I have lived in my craft room most of the time, lol! The first time I saw the papers from Graphic 45 I fell completely in love. There are so many possibilities with these gorgeous and versatile papers and ideas came running. I am like a child in a candy store when I get new G45 collections. I love to fussy cut the images and that is the first thing I do when I get some new papers. Then the ideas follow on how to use them when i look at the images. I totally forget time and place and living in a bobble creating :-) It is great to make home made gifts for family and friends and the know that there is thought behind every thing :-) I have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity). That means that i am allergic to good scents and can't be with other people so much, so I am am so happy to have this great hobby and it fills my life with so much joy and happiness. I am happy to share some ideas I hope that others can be inspired like I am when I see other peoples creations." -Anne Rostad

This first incredible project by Anne is a Happy Haunting spooky house and mini album. This project is out of this world! There is even a wonderful video that Anne created that corresponds to this magnificent creation! Here is what Anne had to say about it!

"Hello everyone :-) Want to share my latest project with you. It is a spooky Halloween house with a mini album inside. I made it so it would be inspiring and fun for children to put in pictures. I used the Happy Haunting Collection 12x12 and 8x8, stickers, chipboard die cuts and metal hinges, all from Graphic 45. I also used sizzix, Tim Holtz and quick cuts dies, Martha Stewart punches and multi matte form Claudine Helmuth. I did a lot of mixed media and used glossy accent, crackle assent and embossing powder on most of the images." -Anne

Before we get to the hop we wanted to share this amazing video of Kristin Wilson's craft room! Kristin is one of our super-talented design team members and her crafting room is out of this world! Take a look inside this amazing creative space! You're going to love her clever ideas for decorating and organization! Kristin even gives some fun tips in the short interview below. Enjoy!

What do you love most about your crafting space?

I adore that my studio is a space that has nothing boy related in it! I am the only girl in my family so my studio is my safe haven... Calgon take me away kinda space.

What tips do you have for keeping your crafting space organized?

The best tip I can give is to clean up your space after each project before starting something new. This philosophy really helps me keep things nice and tidy. Storage is another huge detail in keeping your space organized. Before buying up all the storage you can find on sale, come up with a plan for how you work first. Your storage needs will reveal themselves as you take a look at your creative process.

Did you have a particular plan when you created your crafting space or did it just come together over time?

Total plan! I purchased several books on craft spaces and took what I liked from each one. I also spent numerous hours online looking at all of the craft spaces I could find.

Do you have a fun or nostalgic piece of decorating in your crafting space that inspires you while you craft?

I do. My ATC (artist trading card) wall is especially precious to me. I have collected ATC's since I began crafting from crafters world wide. I made a wall dedicated to my favorite ones right in front of my desk. I look at them all the time. It reminds me just how far I have come in my crafting.

Wow, thanks Kristin for that amazing look at your gorgeous crafting room! And now it's time to get hopping! Remember G45ers, in addition to this week's fabulous blog prizes, we're also giving away two more Graphic 45, Want2Scrap and Art Glitter prize packs on our Facebook and Pinterest pages this week! First up is this incredible Bird Song layout by Nicole Eccles. This LO has so much fabulous movement and vibrant color! It's like stepping into another world! Nicole captured a beautiful scene by layering Bird Song papers and doing some delicate fussy cutting to create lovely dimension. Here is what she had to say about this elegant work of art!

"I really LOVED the colors of this line!!  I had some black and white pictures to use, but decided to really make use of all the wonderful colors and find some pictures that matched perfectly! Thank goodness for Pinterest for all the spectacular pics!!  In designing, I wanted to stay with the feel of Asian inspiration using straight lines and a clean look.  I could have just kept on creating with this line, it was hard to put it down!!" -Nicole Eccles

Next up we've got a fantastic layout and tutorial by Jane Tregenza! This stunning project is perfect for any photo: portraits, vacation pictures, family photos, etc. Lovely layering and bordering of Olde Curiosity Shoppe papers combined with pretty embellishments make this LO an instant classic! Here, Jane takes you step-by-step through her creative process! Take it away, Jane!

I really love Graphic 45’s Olde curiosity Shoppe paper range. I just love the colours and the peacock (bazaar of wonders) print paper is becoming one of my favourite papers. I also love frames and am always looking for ways to create frames using Graphic 45 prints. For this layout I have used a frame which is already printed on the paper but I have change it to suit my layout.

Olde Cusiosity Shoppe Layout

Suppiles:
Graphic 45 print papers from Olde Curiosity Shoppe
Apothecary
Bazaar of Wonders
Olde Curiosity Shoppe
Haute couture
Graphic 45 metal buttons staples
All Chipboard is from Imaginarium Designs
Tim Holtz vintage photo distress ink
Clearsnap cats eye inks in aquamarine and Prussian blue - smooch  spray Vanilla Shimmer
3L classic photo corners in black

Instructions:

Please note all measurements are in inches. All papers need to be inked with brown ink before adhering them.

Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

1.      Remove the Barcode edge of your Apothecary print paper. Cut your piece of blue cardstock to 9 3/16 inches x 9 3/16 inches. Ink around the edges and adhere it to your Apothecary print paper in the middle.

Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

2.      Cut your black cardstock to 8 ¾ inches x 8 ¾ inches. Cut your piece of Bazaar of Wonders to 8 ½ inches x 8 ½ inches.  Ink around the edges and adhere the two pieces together with the same amount of black showing all the way around.

Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

3.      Adhere the piece to your page with the same amount of blue cardstock showing all the way around. Add four photo corners to your Bazaar of wonders and black cardstock.

Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

4.      From your sheet of Olde Curiosity Shoppe, cut the four borders, each one should be about 5/8 inches wide. Cut four pieces of black cardstock an inch wide. Ink the edges of the print paper borders and adhere the two layers together.

Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

5.      Adhere your borders to the page.  They cover the bottles on your Apothecary print paper.  You need to lay them on your page and trim them to fit.

I trimmed some of the black cardstock in the corners to make it match better.

Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

6.      Add your black chipboard corners to your page

Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

7.      Cut your photo mats, the first one is cut from the blue cardstock and is 4 ¼ inches x 6 ¼ inches. The second one is cut from your black cardstock and is 4 ¾ inches x 6 ¾ inches. Ink the edges of the blue mat and adhere the two photo mats together and add them to your layout.

8.      Ink the two smaller peacock feathers with a combination of inks. I used aquamarine and Prussian blue. Spray the feathers with some pearl shimmer spray. Ink the largest one with black ink and glue the black feather to your page and add the two inked smaller feathers over the top, trim the long quills off the feathers off to fit better.

  Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

9.      Ink your flourish shape with brown ink and spray with some vanilla shimmer spray. Glue it to your page over the top of the feather. Glue a black inked Edward flourish in the middle of the brown flourish.

Olde Curiosity Shoppe Layout

10.  Cover your chipboard rectangle plate with print paper. Ink around the edges add your decorate brad to the plate. Use foam tape to add it to your page. Add your journaling to your plate. Cut out a butterfly and only place glue on the butterfly in the middle. Adhere it to your page and bend the wings up. Add your photo to finish your page.

Finished.

Banner_birdsong

Hello G45ers,

Happy Thursday and welcome to our blog today! We hope you are all having a great day! You are in for a treat because we've got some incredible crafts to share with you from our brand new collection Bird Song! Kristin Wilson and Alberto Juarez have created the most gorgeous mini albums that are sure to inspire you! We've also got more fun photos from CHA in Chicago to share with you! Plus we have an extra special treat for you all today! Also on today's blog, we'll be taking you on a tour of Denise Hahn's crafting room! You'll see her amazing creative space and get inspired with some fun decorating and organization tips! It's going to be a great day here on the Graphic 45 blog! So lets get to it! First up we've got some more fun photos from our adventures at CHA! There is always so much to do and so many wonderful people to meet! In addition to having a lavishly decorated booth, we like to have fun events like raffles and giveaways in our booth during the show. Here is a great photo of a line of ladies who are waiting to receive a free Graphic 45 paper pad. This is just a small portion of the line! The Graphic 45 giveaways are a hot ticket at every CHA!

This is a picture of Emma's Paperie who won our first raffle today at 3 pm at CHA.

Photo(8)

Now it's time for some super inspiration from Denise Hahn of our design team! We recently asked our design team if they'd be willing to let us take a peek at their crafting spaces. It is always so inspiring to see the wide variety of options available for a crafting space. It can be a big room or a small space. As long as you can sit down and tap into your creativity then any space is a gift! Whether you've got a whole crafting room or just a big cabinet filled with supplies, it's always a good time to get inspired with new ideas! Plus we can all use a little more organization in our lives! Take a look at this wonderful video that Denise made of her crafting room! She also provided us with some great tips for making your own creative space! Take it away Denise!

"Two of my biggest pieces of practical advice for your craft space; make a plug in station. I have a powerstrip and area for all of my plug-in tools. That way i have them handy at all times and ready to go. When i leave my room i just turn off the entire powerstrip so no worries about leaving my hot glue gun on.  Then next tip is to change out your supplies and decor seasonally. After Christmas I haul out everything and put it in a rubbermaid storage unit outside until the holidays come again." -Denise Hahn

We also asked Denise some questions about the inspiration behind her crafting room!

What do you love most about your crafting space?

That i am surrounded by beautiful things that inspire me.

What tips do you have for keeping your crafting space organized?

Lets be honest, my room is a little organized chaos! I tend to keep things organized by color as i craft across a lot of mediums. So i might be papercrafting but need something red for balance and wind up finding something I might not have thought of if I was only looking at papercrafting embellishments. Another thing I do is clean up after each project before i start another.

Did you have a particular plan when you created your crafting space or did it just come together over time?

It came together over time. I found I was always adapting to new mediums and so when I do my big "clean ups" i always leave plenty of empty space

Do you have a fun or nostalgic piece of decorating in your crafting space that inspires you while you craft?

I love my little Lucy L Piggins thats sits on my desk. She was a gift and her sweet little face makes me smile. She also ends up collecting little leftovers and looking fabulous!

Here is Denise's fabulous video tour of her crafting space! Enjoy!

Next up we have some gorgeous mini albums featuring our new collection Bird Song! There are so many fabulous ways to use Bird Song to create the perfect craft creation. There is such a wonderful variety of designs an colors in this gorgeous new collection. This first project by Kristin Wilson features Bird Song and the Graphic 45 5x8 Altered Art Box. The box opens to reveal an exquisite accordion-fold mini album. You can also see some beautiful uses of the new Graphic 45 Antique Metal Door Pull, Ornate Metal Key Holes and Ornate Metal Keys! This box is simply stunning, right down to the last detail!

Hello G45ers,

Welcome to this very special day of fun and inspiration here at Graphic 45! We are so happy that you're joining us! We have lots of wonderful new crafts from our design team to inspire you! So we're bringing the party to you with today's fabulous photos! For today's craft inspiration we thought it would be fun to share some adorable Happy Haunting tags from Jim, The Gentleman Crafter, Tara Orr and Sharon Ngoo! There is even a wonderful tutorial that Sharon has created that is filled with excellent tips! Today is a celebration of creativity! So lets begin with some photos from CHA!

Here Joanna and Charee pause for a photo at our Bird Song display!

Adding beautiful bows to tags also helps to give them an added element of style and sophistication. Tara also recycled the packaging from Graphic 45 Staples to create a perfect base for her tags! It's a great trick that our design team loves to use!

And speaking of beautiful tags that use recycled Graphic 45 Staples packaging, here we have an amazing tag by Sharon Ngoo that uses this same great technique! Here we have Sharon's amazing Happy Haunting tag that is full of beautiful depth and texture. Using some very fun inking and techniques, Sharon combined Happy Haunting papers and pretty ribbons to make this classic tag. Here Sharon describes her inspiration for this tag in this fun tutorial. Take it away, Sharon!

Hi everybody!! Don't you think that the packaging that all the Graphic45 Staples come in are really pretty?  They have a great shape, and already have a great clock print on them and even lovely vintage coloured eyelets in the holes!  So I decided not to let the packaging go to waste after using the metal doorplate and knob on another project!

Here's what it looks like:  (Can you tell it used to be packaging?)

And I thought you would probably have lots of these packaging tags to recycle too  ;), so here's a tutorial to show you how I made mine.  Happy recycling!

And now it's time for a special announcement! Starting this month, we will be sharing a one-of-a-kind, step-by-step tutorial by Jane Tregenza on how to create and decorate one of her incredible books. Jane's amazing books have been featured on our blog throughout the years and it's always such a treat. Well now you can learn how to make one of your very own with this amazing tutorial series!  The tutorials will happen on the last Tuesday of every month right here on the Graphic 45 blog! Here is a great introduction by Jane about this inspirational blog series!

"Over my three years on the Graphic 45 design team I have made lots of books using the wonderful paper collections from Graphic 45. My books have been published in scrapbooking magazines, featured on the blog and been on display at CHA. I get many emails from all over the world from people who have seen my books and loved them. Lots ask for instructions on how I make them. To rely with detailed instructions is too hard as I need to write pages of instructions and send millions of photos!

As this is my last year on the Graphic 45 design team, I asked if I could do a book as a monthly tutorial. They replied that I could, so this is how it will work. Each month Graphic 45 will post a tutorial on making a page in my book. The book is going to be about 8 ½ inches x 11 inches and will consist of 9 pages, covers and a box to keep it in. I will be doing a page for myself, my husband/partner or male. A page for babies/grandchildren, a page on school days.  A beach page/holidays. Along with other pages to suit males or females. You will be able to choose the order in which your book will go once you have all the pages finished.  It will be a cross between the “People I love “book and my “Great Grand Mother” book. I am quite excited to be creating a new book and sharing it with you all, although I must confess to being a bit apprehensive about the amount of work involved, but it should be fun and I am looking forward to hearing from you all as we take this journey together.

The 1st tutorial will be on us and I will be using a Ladies Diary collection, which is now my favourite collection. You will need a baby photo + some of you growing up and an up to date photo as well. Don’t worry about the size of the photos, our page has a mini book on it, so there is lots of room for photo." -Jane Tregenza

Here are some wonderful photos of some of Jane's amazing books. You may recognize a few of these from past blog posts. We are so excited about this tutorial series. We just know it's going to be a lot of fun for everyone!

And special thanks to Jane Tregenza for this exciting tutorial series which will begin on Tuesday, July 31st! We also want to wish a very happy birthday to Tara Orr of our design team. Tara's birthday is on Sunday and we hope she has a truly wonderful day! We enjoy Tara's incredible talents so much and she is such an important part of our design team. Happy Birthday, Tara! You are fabulous! Well G45ers, please come back and see us on Monday for more fantastic craft inspiration and prize winner announcements! We hope you have a great day and a happy weekend.

Next we have this remarkable Happy Haunting grandfather clock and tutorial by Sharon Ngoo! This is such a clever way to craft with the Graphic 45 Kraftboard Altered Art Boxes! And this is a great time to start thinking about your Halloween crafts! It's never too early to dream! Sharon has even created a super fun tutorial that's sure to get you in the Halloween crafting spirit! What fun! Here is what Sharon had to say about the inspiration behind this wonderful work of art!

I was inspired the phrase "Charms of the witching hour" on the "Happy Haunting" patterned paper. It made me think of clocks and as I was messing around with the altered art boxes, I realised that the proportions of the small box and big box together were just about right for a nice tall grandfather clock! (I love these boxes! They're so versatile!). So here's my version of a Halloween grandfather clock.  I didn't manage to get down to the hardware store to find a nice clock mechanism, so unfortunately, this clock is purely decorative....It would have been really cool if there was a real clock in it! But hey, the pendulum swings!

Wow, wasn't that amazing?! There is even more inspiration on the way as we bring you this incredible Tropical Travelogue mini album and tutorial by Tara Orr. Summer is a great time of year to take some great photos from vacations, family events, holidays and parties. There is so much going on! Why not save your cherished photos in a gorgeous mini album like this one?! Here Tara Orr explains her inspiration behind this beautiful work of art. She also takes you page by page through her creative process with lots of wonderful tips. Have some fun creating a Tropical Travelogue mini album of your very own! Take it away, Tara!

Tropical Travelogue mini album

After every vacation, we are all left with wonderful holiday photos.  Sometimes we have so many that the thought of including them all into a scrapbook page or mini album can seem overwhelming.  After I returned from a wonderful Hawaiian vacation with my mother last year, I had so many memorable photos that I didn’t want to leave any out.  Solution: An envelope album!  I was able to display a few of my favourite photos on some of the pages and all of the other photos were easily tucked into several of the envelopes within the album itself.

Supplies:

Graphic 45 4x6 Kraft envelope album
Graphic 45 Tropical Travelogue Paper Collection (8x8 paper pad)
Graphic 45 Tropical Travelogue Tags
Graphic 45 Tropical Travelogue Cardstock Stickers
Graphic 45 Envelope Tags
Graphic 45 Metal Tags
Graphic 45 Metal Buttons
Graphic 45 Metal Hinges
Fiskars Personal Paper Trimmer
Scrapbook Adhesives 3D Foam Squares

  Tropical Travelogue mini album

Directions

Front Cover: This album cover was super fun to create as it had an element of overlap due to the envelope.  I first covered the front cover and overlapping top flap of the envelope with some ‘Island Jewel’ paper . I then cut out a rectangular shape from the ‘Hibiscus Heaven’ paper and layered on top of the main page while leaving the envelope flap just with the green paper. I then built up my front cover by layering several fussy cut flowers from the ‘Island Jewel’ paper around a paper doily which I placed in the centre of the page.  I also added a few tags around my page to complete the inside of the front cover.

Now we need to finish the top flap of the envelope which will be covering much of the inside design you just created.  I used one of the frame tags from Graphic 45’s Chipboard Tag Sheet and centered it on the envelope flap. I then continued fussy cutting more flowers from the ‘Island Jewel’ paper to surround my frame. Lastly, I embellished with a few more fussy cut butterflies as well as another tag for added dimension

Tropical Travelogue mini album

Pages 2 & 3: When creating mini albums, I always like to create my pages so that they coordinate with one another.  Using an entire paper collection makes this task much easier.  I often create my pages so that they flow into one another so that each facing page ‘matches’ the other.  These pages have been built up with several layers of patterned papers, tags, and fussy cut elements from the Tropical Travelogue Collection.  I often find that when using a neutral background colour, like the ones on these two pages, a subtle pop of colour really jumps right off the page.  You can also use 3D Foam Dots to achieve further dimension for your project.

Tropical Travelogue mini album

Tropical Travelogue mini album

Pages 4 & 5: Several of my pages were created with wonderful imagery from the patterned papers which I was using.  Don’t feel like you need to display all your photos front and centre of your mini albums.  Sometimes having a page with wonderfully fussy cut elements, bold colours and beautiful embellishments is enough.  If you don’t have an envelope album, try tucking your photos behind your embellishments or leaving space behind your patterned papers.  You can even add your own pockets to your mini albums for those extra photos you don’t want to leave out.

Tropical Travelogue mini album

Tropical Travelogue mini album

Pages 6 & 7: Scrappers often find the transition from layouts to cards or layouts to mini albums quite difficult at first – I know I did.  What helped me create these more quickly and more seamlessly is to imagine that I was creating a whole collection of mini scrapbook pages.  The way you would compose your layout works the same way you would compose the page in a mini album – simply on a smaller scale.  For each page, try changing up your designs as well so that the album flows nicely from one page to the next without looking the exact same.  As you can see on these two pages, the first is more of a horizontal design with the paper strips cut lengthwise.  The facing page is more of a vertical design with both pages showcasing coordinating patterns and colours as well as several layered elements such as fussy cut tags, birds, stickers as well as the introduction of metal hardware.  It is important to showcase several types of mediums within your album so that the final result does not look ‘flat’.  Even though papers can be popped up with 3D Foam Squares, etc. the end result will look a little more two dimensional that a project with the addition of twine, flowers, metal, etc.

Tropical Travelogue mini album

Pages 8 & 9: I decided to make the most of my tag frame and cut out a photo to fit directly inside.  When you include photos directly on your pages, try using similar colours found in your pattern papers or use black and white/sepia toned photos so that they do not compete with your page.  Because the area in which you are working is smaller, tiny details go a long way.  The simple addition of a bow here, a tag here or a layered element there will create wonderfully diverse effects to your pages.

 Tip(s):

  • Because the finished project can be quite bulky, you can close with twine or ribbon wrapped around the entire album. You can include as many photos as you would like with this album – displaying your favourites on each page and inserting any extras in the handy envelope pages.
  • To secure your hemp twine when making a ‘bow’, apply a small amount of Glossy accents to the center of your knot so that it does not come undone.

We hope you all had a wonderful time today! Thank you all so much for joining us for today's sneak peek blog. Big thanks to Tara Orr for her amazing work! We hope you will all come back and see us tomorrow for more delights from Bird Song, new contest winner announcements and fun crafts! We wish you all a fabulous day!

Happy Papercrafting!

Olde curiosity shoppe is proving to be one of my favourite collections from Graphic 45. I love the way it works for male or female photos. The colours are so vibrate and strong and the prints on the paper perfect. You can do so much with the patterns on the papers. Whether you use them as full sheets for cut the up and use them as pieces. It all works so well and the layouts come together beautifully. This layout is one I have done for my Son, the colours on his shirt did not go with the prints from Olde Curiosity Shoppe so I converted his photo to black and white.

Supplies:
Olde Curiosity Shoppe
Mercurial Masterpiece
Olde Curiosity shoppe
Counting down
Race for time
Tim Holtz Book plate
Assorted Brads
Chipboard clocks and title from Imaginarium Designs
Colourbox inks and Smooch Spritz sprays – Silver foil and Vanilla Shimmer

Feel the rush 1

1.       Cut the cream edge from Mercurial Masterpiece, ink around the edges and adhere it your black cardstock

Feel the rush 2

2.       Cut your piece of Counting Down print paper to 10 ¼ inches x 10 ¼ inches and ink around the edges. Adhere it to the middle of your Mercurial Masterpiece.

Feel the rush 3

3.       Cut the border from your Olde Curiosity Shoppe print paper.  Make sure you leave the gold edge on the outside and the yellow edge on the inside attached. It should measure about ¾ of an inch wide. The total measurement is 10 3/8 inches x 10 3/8 inches wide. Cut it in one piece and ink around the edges.

Feel the rush 4

Feel the rush 5

4.       Cut your sheet of Cajun to 10 5/8 inches x 10 5/8 inches wide. Adhere your print paper to it with the same amount of Cajun showing all the way around.  Remove the middle bit of the cardstock so a little bit of the Cajun is showing on the inside as well. The cardstock should measure about 1 inch wide all the way around. Ink around the edges.

Feel the rush 6

5.       Ink your large chipboard clock black and place it on your page. Hook your border over the clock at the top and left side of your page. Tuck the border under the clock on the right and bottom side of your page. Make sure it fits on your page within the border printed on your bottom print paper. Once you are happy with where it is, use foam tape on the top left border corner and bottom left border corner to adhere it to your page. Use flat tape to adhere the border to the right and bottom of your page.

  Feel the rush 7

6.       Cut your first photo mat out of the black cardstock, cut it 5 ¼ inches x 7 ¼ inches. Cut your second mat out of the Cajun cardstock, cut it to 5 ¾ inches x 7 ¾ inches and ink around the edges.  Adhere the two together. Tuck the bottom left corner under your clock and the top left corner over your clock. Mat a piece of optical oddities with black cardstock and tuck it under your photo mat. Once you are happy with your placement, adhere it to your layout.

  Feel the rush 8

7.       Match up your cogs, use the above image as a guide. Some you will need to ink black and some will need to be sprayed with silver spray.  Ink a large chipboard clock brown with distress ink and glue it onto a piece of print paper and cut around the edges. Use a piece of raw chipboard and put it through the sizzix machine to cut out a key and key hole. Ink the key with brown ink. Use distress embossing powder on the key hole and heat it with a heat gun.  Allow the distress powder to cool. Lightly rub your fingers over the key hole and then rub more distress ink over it. Cut a small piece of print paper and glue it under the key hole opening. Use a scrap of print paper and glue your book plate onto it and cut around the edges. Lay all the cog, key, key hole, small clock, and book plate on top of the clock and use brads to attach all the items. Once it is finished glue it onto your layout. Add a brad at the end of the key to attach it to your page.

Feel the rush 9

8.       Ink your title “feel the rush” with distress ink, and spray it with some shimmer spray. Bend it slightly and glue  it onto the large black clock. Use micro brads to hold it to your page.

Finished.

Next we have this gorgeous altered birdhouse by Nicole Eccles. Since we're introducing Bird Song today we thought it would be fitting to have a fun bird-themed craft on today's blog! This is the perfect project for summer! Nicole blended a few different Graphic 45 collections to give this birdhouse a totally unique look! Here is what she had to say about the inspiration behind this fabulous creation!

"This birdhouse was something I had decorated when I was much younger, using paints and foam stamps.  After years of wear and tear, it was in desperate need of a makeover!  I can now say I have decorated a birdhouse with papers, and it won’t be the last!!  Designed now for indoor use, the top comes off for storage of hidden treasures.  Covered with gorgeous G45 Little Darlings paper mixed with Olde Curiosity Shoppe, Curtain Call and even a touch of the new Ladies Diary chipboard.  At the entrance, a G45 Metal Tag makes a fun little door mat.  While a stamped metal brad added the perfect finishing touch to the glass knob.  Embellishing the peak is a handmade finial cut from Little Darlings paper, then backed with chipboard for strength.  Designing this piece was a grand adventure and reminded me of being young making  gingerbread houses!  I highly suggest it to anyone!" -Nicole Eccles
