Designer Day: Come Meet Stacy Cohen!

Designer Day is a chance for us to feature one of our talented design team members and have them share a bit about themselves, along with a few gorgeous projects. Today we have a lovely gal who brings us so many amazing projects, all with her delightful touches added to them.

Come meet Stacy Cohen!

................................................................................................................................................

2 Stacy Cohen 400x400-1

Hi, everyone!    I’m from Los Angeles, California, born and raised here.   I live here with my loving husband, Robert, and our two darling daughters, Rebecca- age 8, and Danielle- age 7.

Robert and Stacy sized

My girls are the inspiration for all my scrapbooking and creative endeavors.  I call them my little muses.

Danielle and Rebecca July 2010 sized

Where I live: One of the perks of living in Los Angeles is that there are so many things to do and see here.  We are minutes away from famous landmarks like the Hollywood Sign, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Groman’s Chinese Theater.  Here I am putting my hand in Marilyn Monroe’s handprints.

Hollywood Groman's Chinese sized

A short drive in the other direction takes us to the Santa Monica Pier and the beautiful Southern California beaches.

Ferris wheel sized

Work:  I work part-time as an insurance agent, specializing in health and life insurance.   I work with my mom and we always have a great time together, so it makes work not seem like “work.”  I’m fortunate that I only work part-time, so most of the day I get to be a stay-at-home-mom.  My flexible work schedule allows me to be there for my girls -- drive them to and from school, attend all their school events, volunteer for their classrooms, and be home with them when they are not in school.

Scrapbooking:   I started scrapbooking in 2005 and I’ve been addicted ever since.   When I sit down at my scrap table and start creating, all of life’s day-to-day stresses go *poof*.  I’m so grateful that I discovered this wonderful hobby.  I always say: “It’s cheaper than therapy!”

Joining the Prima Design Team was truly a dream come true for me.  I’ve been a huge Prima fan for years now, and working with the gorgeous Prima products makes my heart sing!

Here are a couple of my Prima projects.

This first one is something I made a while back and it’s one of my personal favorites.  I started with a plain foam doll bodice and adorned it with Prima crystals, paper, lace and flowers.

Prima altered doll final

Supplies:
300456 - Pearls and Crystals Ice
300609 - Pearls and Crystals Blue
840754 - Paradise City Sweet Whispers
840969 - The Tropics Rainy Breeze,
920340 - Screenprinted canvas sheets
534967 - Lace Jaqueline
529451 - Lace B
535148 - Raja Centers
533137 - Trellis Roses

If you’ve seen my layouts, then you know that I love to crochet on them.   My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was a little girl.  I never learned the names of the various stitches so I can’t follow fancy crochet patterns, but I find that the basic stitches work just fine on scrapbook pages.

We have an amazing class tomorrow night with Lolly and she is working her teal magic on Prima packaging! That's right-the box she is working with is a container for Prima flowers! I remember having a conversation with her about this in early December. I told her I had the perfect products to use for a class and she told me she was up for the challenge. It turned out even better than I had imagined! This box is perfect to hold jewelry, embellishments, vacation treasures or make it into a shadow box...the possibilities are endless!

Getting Ready for 2011!

Making a calendar for the next year is something that EVERYONE should do! And this year we are going to help you create one that is functional AND gorgeous!

Calendar jamie2011Cal. 2

The talented Jamie Dougherty created this FABULOUS desk calender for 2011 using a standard calendar template and some gorgeous Prima products.

Calender jamie2011Cal. 1

Jamie created a "stand" for the calendar out of our thick Road Trip paper. Score a fold in the bottom to help the calendar stand up correctly on your desk.

The calendar pages were found right HERE! Just find the one you want and print it out. Jamie stacked her months together and added perforated lines at the top (Use a simple rotary sewing tool to do this) so she could tear each month off. Two large eyelets hold the pages together.

Calender jamie2011Cal
Next: Time to DECORATE! Jamie used Prima flowers, felt, pearls and alphas to create a gorgeous cluster on the calendar.

Calendar Supplies:

Julie GarlandGirl-sm

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer says it is time to celebrate! This tag-filled layout shares hilarious pics of Julie as she models a garland she created. Wouldn't this be a GREAT party idea for New Year's? Just make a garland and snap shots of each guest modeling it. Scrap all the pics on one layout by using Julie's cool tag system. (I am sure the photos will get wilder and wilder as the night goes on!)

Julie GarlandGirl-Detail1-sm

Add loads of journaling AND photos to your design by clustering information on tags which are neatly layed out.

Julie GarlandGirl-Detail3-sm

Garland Girl Supplies:

  • Stamps: Prima (#541903, 541811, 541859, 541828, 541866, 541897)
  • Centers: Prima (#535063)
  • Flowers: Prima (#538705, 301026)

Julie's Notes:

  • I stamped each of the tags with a mixture of several different background stamps.  I then painted over each of the tags with watercolor paint.  Once the tags were dry I left them to flatten under a heavy book overnight.
  • The photos are each stitched to the tags using black thread.
  • I dressed up the plain white flowers with some rhinestone centers.
  • The journaling card is a piece of packaging that I gesso-ed over (love that edge, but not the green color) and then fed into my typewriter!

On the twelfth day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: California

Days 4: New Zealand

Day 5: New Zealand

Day 6: Singapore

Day 7: Poland

Day 8: Delaware

Day 9: Kentucky

Day 10: Southern California

Day 11: Australia

And today, our final day, we are visiting the Netherlands to see the very talented, Birgit Koopsen!

******************************************************************************************************************************

Vrolijk Kerstfeest!! Merry Christmas wherever you are!!

Birgit christmas

Today it’s Christmas day and my turn to tell you something about how we celebrate Christmas here in the Netherlands.

Traditionally Christmas here is not about presents. It’s a Christian Holiday and our children do not believe in Santa. In the eyes of a lot of Dutch people Santa is very American. Due to commercial influences more and more people start giving presents at Christmas though.

Maria&jesus

But we have Sinterklaas, who could be Santa’s brother. He comes to Holland at the beginning of December on a boat filled with presents from Spain. On his birthday, December 5th, he spoils all the kids with presents. Most children believe in Sinterklaas until the age of about 8. Statistically Sinterklaas is the number one Dutch tradition and probably never will be beaten by Santa.

So how do we celebrate Christmas?

A lot of people go to church on Christmas Eve and spend one or both Christmas Days (we have first and second Christmas Day) with family. In my family we have our own traditions. Because both my father as my grandma from mothers side are German.  And in Germany Christmas is celebrated with presents. There for my family comes together on Christmas Eve to spend time together, eat and have loads of presents under the Christmas tree. We all bring something for each other and for all the kids and the pile of presents is building up the week before Christmas Eve, making the children very curious and nervous, haha! Then on Christmas Eve they are finally allowed to open them!

First Christmas Day we spend with my family in law. We used to have a “traditional” Christmas dinner together, but in the last couple of years our family has grown so big that we don’t do that anymore. Nowadays every family member prepares and brings a dish and we have a big Christmas buffet (tapas style). We spent the day together, mostly going out for a wintery walk in the afternoon. We always hope for a white Christmas but don’t get that very often, unfortunately!

Traditional Dutch Christmas dishes are deer, pheasant, hare, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts, braised pears, and bread filled with almond paste, nuts and fruits and Christmas Wreaths made from filled chocolate. We drink Glühwein and hot chocolate with rum (mmmm!) Of course we have Christmas Cookies too, covered with almond. Marlijn loves to make them herself!!

Cookies

Of course we decorate our homes for Christmas. The tree goes up about 2 weeks before and at the same time we fill our houses with candles, Christmas decorations, wreaths, lights and Christmas Music.

 Room

Tree

This year my Christmas tree is silver and white and I had just the perfect Prima Products to create a lovely Christmas ornament that fits the scene.

I covered a traditional white Christmas bubble with lace, added some flower centers and silk flowers and hung it with a piece of a Prima necklace.

  • Lace 541354
  • Flower Centers Dynasty Ivory  536138
  • Madrigal Blossom White Librett 540128
  • Scrapbook Jewelry Blizzard 544201

Something I love to do in the week before Christmas is go to a city where there is a Christmas market. I love the atmosphere, all the little sheds with Christmas decorations, all the lights when it gets dark in the afternoon and then drink hot Glühwein which warms your hands and inside. That’s what this LO is about.

  • Alphabet stickers 541750
  • Ribbon 810184
  • Paisley Road Bhangra 841683

Last year we went to Bremen in Germany. Christmas markets in Germany are great! It was cold, there was even a little bit of snow and the Glühwein tasted so well!

I also love taking pictures of my little girl with her Christmas head on. I still have to make this year’s so here a couple older ones that I still love!!

Kerst 2008

Hope you all have the Christmas you hoped for and for those of you who lost someone you love this past year I hope that warm memories will fill your hearts!! -Birgit

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: California

Days 4: New Zealand

Day 5: New Zealand

Day 6: Singapore

Day 7: Poland

Day 8: Delaware

Day 9: Kentucky

Day 10: Southern California

And today we are jet-setting across the world to Australia to see the one and only, Janine Koczwara!

.........................................................................................................................................

Janine
There are many similarities between an Aussie Christmas and a New Zealand one as we are both in the Southern Hemisphere!!  So, I will concentrate more on the traditions of my family and my home state of South Australia.  Our weather is warm so many of the festivities are outdoor-focused!

The lead up to Christmas is all part of the magic of the season!  A traditional start to Christmas in Australia, (especially South Australia) begins with the Christmas Pageant in November, where stunningly-decorated Christmas floats are paraded through one of the cities major streets, to the throngs of excited children (and parents) flanking the edges.  This year a guiness record was set at the pagent for the most carol singers ever, 9100 singers in total!

043910-christmas-pageant

It has become custom that you can put up your Christmas Tree after the pageant, however, in our house, I tend to make them wait a little longer as there always seems to be small children in our house eager to pull off all the baubles!!

In the week preceeding Christmas our State also puts on its own Carols by Candelight on the banks of the Torrens river!  Live singing of carols and special guest performers enchant the crowd and there is always a visit from man of the moment, Father Christmas!  Then to set the whole night off, a fabulous fireworks display!

There is always a televised Carols By Candelight live from Melbourne on New Year's Eve, which becomes a family event for Children to watch before going excitedly to bed (where sleep eludes them for quite some time with all the excitement.)

In our household we leave a plate of cookies and some milk out for santa and, mysteriously, by morning the milk is gone and so are the cookies, apart from a few crumbs! Apparently Santa has a liking for Anzac Cookies in our house! (These cookies are a popular Australian and New Zealand recipe that dates back to the first World War.) Interestingly these cookies happen to be my husbands favourite, it makes you wonder why he believes they are Santa's favourite as well!!!

Usually the sun is blazing down and temperatures are soaring above 35 degrees celcius on Christmas Day!!!  This weather screams, "crank up the BBQ", throw on a few sausages and steaks, and enjoy some cold salads and fresh deserts (guaranteed to be some Pavlova! Which Aussies and Kiwi's alike claim as their own desert!! Oh the rivalry never ends!)

Pavlova_image
Like most people around the world it is all about family, and kids always feature heavily in the festivities of the day. Present opening at my Aunties and Uncles often involves a Santa Suit and very feminine Santa!! There is no discrimination of age at this time and the young and old can all enjoy some time with Santa!!  Yes, this photo is rather old of my two eldest on "Santa's" knee!  There is also a strong family resemblence between Santa and my Grandmother??

Acollage (Copy)

After all the eating is done, the frivolity of Santa's visit and opening the multitude of presents is over, it is time for the Christmas Cricket Game!

  Christmas Day 075 copy
Yes, I do think he missed contact with that ball!!!  But it is all about the fun of the game and a bit of excersize to wear off the feasting!

If the cricket isn't enough, then it is time for a dip in the pool, which is by far and away the highlight (after present opening) for the children.  I find myself smiling at the kids having so much fun in the swimming pool, and I recall my own childhood frivolity on Christmas Day in the pool as well. Yes the boys were a few years older when this picture was taken to the one of them on Santa's knee!!

Dec 25046 (Large)

Christmas for us is all about family!  A chance to catch up with relatives we havent seen for months, sitting around laughing and chatting away the day. Most years it involves running around between my family and my husbands family, but it always involves family. This LO of my Sisiter-in-law with my Niece and Nephew sums it all up, the greatest gift of all at Christmas time, and anytime is Family.  Spending time with those we love, laughing, talking and making memories together.

For the past five years, Cari has been a design team member for Prima and we just love her creative style! She is also the coordinator for our online class program, Live with Prima, which has been a growing success! Take a moment to get to know Cari a little bit better and see all that she has to share with us....

Cari live

Hello everyone!! I am really excited about sharing a little bit about myself here....My family and I live in Upstate NY, just outside the city of Syracuse. My husband Peter and I have two beautiful boys, Jack and Bryan. And I can't forget, our sweet yellow lab, Cassidy! I work from home, coordinating Prima's online class program, Live with Prima. I truly love my job! I get to work with talented designers and I have met so many new friends online. It's exciting to see it all come together when we broadcast a show-and it's even better when everyone enjoys themselves. It makes all of the hard work worth while for me. I am also part of the trade show team for Prima, so you will see me at a lot of the public venues, such as CHA.

Theboys1

Here are my two rascals, looking very sweet and innocent! Don't let the photo fool you-they are balls of energy and the volume in our house can hit record decimals. Did I mention we live in a neighborhood with lots of kids? Well... we do and a lot of them end up at our house!  It's always busy here and I love that their friends are always over. I think it says a lot about our home and I couldn't be happier!

IMG_3961

This is my sweet dog, Cass. She has been dubbed the "Nana" of the neighborhood. She is always watching the children and rarely lets them out of her site. Our neighbor has a box of treats in their garage and when she sees their car coming up the street, she wanders over to their driveway to greet them in hopes for a biscuit. She will do this everytime someone comes home and they are a large family. Needless to say, she may get several treats in one day-LOL! I am a huge animal lover and dogs are my favorite kind. They are amazing creatures!

During the summer, we spend a lot of time at my FIL's cottage on Keuka Lake. We are truly blessed to have a place to go to get away from the craziness of everyday life. This is a great place to spend time with our family, especially the Fennell side. We don't get to see them as often as we like, so time spent with them here is precious. This is an amazing place to spend long summer days swimming, fishing, boating or doing nothing at all.

4thofjuly-022

Here are all of the Fennell children together at the lake. They love spending time together and I always get a group photo every year. I adore these kids like they were my own. Each of them special in their own unique way.

 ***************************************************************************************************************************************

I have been scrapbooking for about 8 years now and I just love this hobby! My style and taste has changed so much over the years and I continue evolve over time. Not only do I enjoy creating layouts, but also cards, mini albums and altered projects too. I love the variety and I create a project based on what I feel like making at the time. It's refreshing for me to mix it up and I never seem to grow tired of creating one thing or another. Here are some samples of all the different projects I like to create:

Artcatalog1

  • 536718-Raspberry Tea Chipboard
  • 536824-Raspberry Tea Pebbles
  • 538224-Caravan Flower
  • 539368-Belle Artes
  • 539399-Belle Artes
  • 537760-Athena

I tend to add a lot of color and embellishments to my work and the photographs are always my main source of inspiration. I don't scrap every single photo, just the ones I feel are especially important in one way or another.

 Shimmerzcard1

  • 540227-Innoscence Flower
  • 540449-Innoscence Flower
  • 536350-Clear Stamp Set
  • 841171-Pastiche Paper-Love Letter

Cards are so fun to create. They are mini versions of my layouts and still just as satisfying to make without a lot of the effort like some of my larger projects.

Alicemini2

I love mini albums! They are perfect projects to create when you have a group of photos that tell a story. I love all the possibilities that they hold and there is something so satisfying about it when it's all completed. Each little page is unique and yet they all come together as one project.

On the Tenth Day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: California

Days 4 & 5: New Zealand

Day 6: Singapore

Day 7: Poland

Day 8: Delaware

Day 9: Kentucky

Day 10: We are off to Southern California for a sunny Christmas with the talented Jamie Dougherty! (Anyone getting jet-lag yet?)

...........................................................................................................................................

Jamiedprima pic

Living in Southern California brings on so many fun and different ways to celebrate the holidays.  I am so grateful to be able to spend them with my family. It officially starts every year on the weekend of Thanksgiving. Myself, my husband Lance, and our two children- Karlie and Quentin- go out with my parents to their house on the River.  The community has a whole week-end set up. They have a Golf Cart Parade; where they are decked out in lights and Christmas decorations.  They drive down the streets and make stops along the way.  The week-end is filled with friends, food, and fun.  (Something out of the box but it brings everyone who lives there, visits there, or vacations there, together...celebrating Christmas.) The kids get a sugar high, and the adults vie for an award for their creativity. Karlie and Quentin always ride with my dad. They are his two little side kicks.

Jamie prima Xmas2

We enjoy watching everyones creations come down the road...Music and laughter bopping down the street.

Jamie prima Xmas

Christmas Eve, ever since I was a little girl, was spent at my Grandpa's house.  And we continue doing it that way.  We have dinner, the kids get early presents from Santa, and we do a gift exchange.  No matter if life gets in the way through out the year, I can always count on all of us being there. That is one of the BEST Christmas traditions ever.

Jamie Tree
Being the time of year for gift giving, I thought I would create my own wrapping paper.  I used a Prima Clear Stamp and created the design across plain butcher paper. Then sprayed it with Glimmer Mist.  Using recycled boxes, I covered them with my new paper and then embellished them with Prima accents.  Why not make your gifts special?

Jamie boxes (2)

You can even color the beads on the clear vines with Copic Markers for a festive touch.

Christmas is favorite time of year.  I love decorating and creating gifts for others.  I made this set of wings out of distressed cardboard and Gesso.  I altered the large flowers with Glimmer Mist.

On the Ninth Day of Christmas (and a give-away)...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: California

Day 4: New Zealand

Day 5: New Zealand

Day 6: Singapore

Day 7: Poland

Day 8: Delaware

And today we are heading over to Kentucky to see what Sharon Laakkonen is up to!

But before we do that we would love to spread a little holiday cheer! Leave a comment on this post sharing with us your favorite Christmas tradition! We will draw a random winner next Monday, December 27th, and send them out a Prima Christmas Present! (Open to all countries.)

..........................................................................................................................................

Sharon laakkonen headshot

Hey, everyone. I hope you are enjoying the Christmas season so far! I am a Wisconsin transplant to the Horse Capital of the World! Kentucky is a fabulous place to live and our family has REALLY enjoyed our time here!

IMG_5664ed
The horse farms are so stunning. Every farm you pass in Lexington has picturesque, painted fences that are picture perfect!

And moving along to Christmas: I often think the weeks preceeding it are almost as enjoyable as Christmas Day. Our family has a ton of traditions that we have adopted over the years and I cannot wait to share a few of them with you. (I love traditions and am always on the look-out to add more to our crazy mix!)

DSC_0107edcrsm
First Tradition: We try to take a family photo every. single. year.
My poor kids (and hubby)...they really do not like posing at all, but I love it!! I love seeing how the kids have grown year to year. This year we hired a fab photographer to catch ALL ELEVEN OF US so I didn't have to set up the self-timer and then scurry back before the shutter went off!  Photo by Sarah Galvan Photography

IMG_3821ed

I think we have changed (and grown in number) a bit from this "self-timer-scurry-back-in" family photo taken in 2004! (Bethany has sinced married, and she and her hubby have an adorable baby girl!)

Thebestpicsm
Do you see that sweet little girl in the photo above? She is our sweet granddaughter, Amariah! We are so excited to watch her experience all of these fun Christmas firsts...

IMG_2131edsm

...which includes pulling shiny bows off of packages and swiping dazzling ornaments off our tree!

Second Tradition: Each year we used to make a personalized ornament for each of our children (or let them pick one out at the store.) Well, when decorating our tree after Thanksgiving this year, we found our youngest two boys came up a bit short on this tradition. To alleviate the pangs of guilt hubby and I ran the boys out to get some ornaments for them right away. (This is what happens when you have seven kids. Trust me.) After finding some really cheesy ornaments (of their own choice) we now have a full tree (including a pheasant with a four-foot feathered tail...and a tasteful Chick-Fil-A cow ornament), and all is well in our home. :)

Ornaments

Christmas crafting is so much fun when you can customize it, right? My daughter, Brittany, and I put this Prima Banner together using some really festive Prima products!

Banner

The banner is made from a Donna Downey canvas house and two birds.

Necklace
A floral necklace joins each side together to create a floral swag.

Bird
We added a Holiday Branch in each bird's mouth for a sweet touch, and used Lustered Leaves as wings.

House
The canvas house is painted with Glimmer Glam and has a lovely spray of Prima products to decorate it. The wreath is made from Antique Mistletoe picks which are cut apart to form the circle, while "smoke" is created from a large, sheer Temple Leaf and stems.

Wholeshot
What a festive touch our "Home for the Holidays" banner adds to our mantel!

Supplies:

  • 544195 Scrapbook Jewelry-2
  • 533069 Lustered Leaves-gold
  • 539269 Temple Leaves-gold
  • 920098 Canvas Birds-2
  • 920104 Canvas House
  • 544041 Antique Mistletoe-traditional
  • 543280 Glistening Vines-berries
  • 530877 SIIC Centers
  • 850210 Flocked Transparency
  • Tattered Angels-Glimmer Glam (Golden Goddess, Be Positive)
  • Fabri-Tac

Third Tradition: Our family also decorates gingerbread houses. I grabbed a ready-made kit this year (I know, I know. I should be baking home-made gingerbread, but, less stress = a happier momma) and brought it home and the kids (including the 18 and 21 year olds) wanted to decorate them right away!

IMG_1997ed

IMG_1998ed

So they did...I think they did a fabulous job! The Christmas music was blaring on the iPod while sugar sprinkles ended up all over the floor, but, hey...our gingerbread village is now on display in our kitchen window for all to treasure!

Fourth tradition: Moving along to one of our favorite traditions that we SHARE with as many people around us as possible:

TRUFFLES!

Truffles

Each year our family will whip up dozens and dozens of delicious home-made truffles. We make mocha, oreo, cookie dough, mint, eggnog and a host of other truffle flavors to share with family and friends. It can be super messy, but that's the fun of doing it together!

Smalltinsover

Once we get the truffles made Britt and I decorate Prima tins with festive flowers and leaves to present them as gifts or donate them to charity.

Smalltins

Tins

How cute are these all packaged up Prima-style?

You can make your very own truffles too. Here is a delicious recipes for Oreo Truffles.

A few tips:

  • Refrigerate the balls in between steps so they keep their shape while dipping.
  • Use a metal Wilton dipping spoon. It makes a world of difference.
  • Roll the balls smaller than you want them. Once you dip them they will get much larger.
  • Melt a contrasting color of coating and spoon into a baggie. Seal baggie and snip off a tiny hole in the corner to drizzle fine lines over the dipped truffles.

Prima Supplies for tins:

  • 528645 Caboodles Prima Tin (or any Prima tin!)
  • 712358, 543136 Poinsettia Flowers and Leaves
  • 840358, 840327 Christmas Fancy Papers

............................................................................................................................................

And last, but not least: Once Christmas arrives we try to keep the focus on what the holiday is REALLY about. Presents are great, family time is wonderful, but we don't want the message of Christmas lost in all the hubbub going on. It's important for us to make sure our kids hear the Christmas Story each year and that we say "Happy Birthday to Jesus" before we tear into the gifts, have a huge wrapping paper fight (we are so mature, eh?), and eat our traditional ham dinner!

...and the very fun wrapping paper fight! (Please tell me other families act this goofy too!)

I hope you have enjoyed sharing my family traditions! Merry Christmas to each and every one of you! ~Sharon

On the Eighth Day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: California

Day 4: New Zealand

Day 5: New Zealand

Day 6: Singapore

Day 7: Poland

And today we are heading over to Delaware, USA, to see our sweet gal, Anabelle O'Malley!

.............................................................................................................................................

Anabelle me 9-26-1
Hi, it's Anabelle and I'm here to tell you a bit about my family's Christmas celebration. I live in Delaware, so we are already experiencing cold weather and even a little snow. Christmas is definitely my favorite time of the year! This year, I'm trying to keep the craziness of the season to a minimum and we are enjoying the true spirit of the season.

One of our favorite December traditions is baking cookies. We make them for friends and family, but like to keep some for ourselves, too. Ryan, my son, loves the sugar coookies that he can decorate.

Anabelle cookies

My favorite are these cherry thumbprint cookies. My mom has been making them for as long as I can remember.

Anabelle cherry cookies

I married into a large Irish family, so our celebrations are filled with lots of people, activity and fun! We begin with church on Christmas Eve. I love how beautiful the church looks and I love the songs and feeling of joy. We attend the children's mass, so the kids all sing Happy Birthday to Jesus and have cake to celebrate. After that, we go back to my Sister-in-law's home. She has a big open house and people come and go all night long. The best visitor, of course, is Santa. We know he's arrived when we hear the reindeer hooves beating on the rooftop! The kids are always so excited to sit on his lap and receive their present.

Anabelle santa

One of the highlights of Christmas Eve is my husband's birthday celebration. He was born near midnight on Christmas Eve. The nurses came into the delivery room and sang Silent Night while his mother held him in her arms. Now, isn't that an amazing way to come into the world? We always have a special cake for him and everyone joins in on his celebration. Here's a layout about last year's birthday.

  • Annalee Notecard 541989

(Technique to note: I colored the chipboard alphas with Copic Markers so they would match the paper.)

Christmas Day is very low key for us. I cook a big breakfast and we sit around eating and playing with our new 'toys' all day. Sometimes we even stay in our pajamas all day, listening to Christmas carols and sitting in front of the fire.  A big Christmas dinner, usually roast beef, caps the day off.

Since my sister-in-law's party is such a big bash, we need another day to open presents with just my husband's family. This takes place at Uncle Joe's house. There are PILES of presents for all nine grandchildren and when he gives the signal they tear into them. It's chaos! And the kids love it. We spend the rest of the day relaxing and just enjoying each other.

Here is Ryan with his cousin laying in the leftover wrapping paper.

As you may know, I love to make cards! So one of my favorite things to do is to give handmade cards to people during the holidays. Here is one that I will leave for you...

Designer Day: Come Meet Jaime Warren!

Today we get to meet one of our returning (and very talented) Design Team members who is a professional photographer to boot. We are so excited to have her share a bit about herself...along with three BRAND-NEW dazzling projects!

Come meet Jaime Warren!

Hi everyone!  Let me preface this by letting you know that I am horrible about writing about myself.  I never know what to say, what to share, what not to share!  I get nervous - like, public speaking nervous!  lol!  In all seriousness though - I am your average WAHM, SAHM, Homeschooling mom.  I wear a lot of hats around here - mom, teacher, wife, business woman,  daughter...just like every other hard working mom/wife/woman out there.

I have three beautiful, witty and loving daughters - Hailey, who is 10, Jillian who is 8, and Addison who is 3.  They keep me on my toes, but, most importantly, they keep me laughing.  Each one brings something special and unique to our family dynamic - Hailey with her motherly and helpful nature.  Jillian with her wit and sarcasm.  And Addison with her super girly, sassy ways.  We started homeschooling this year, something I have wanted to do since Hailey was old enough to start school.  My husband wasn't sold on the idea until this past year when our struggles with Jillian and her anxieties about school reached their peak.  It has been quite the adventure, but one I am so thankful for.

Speaking of my husband, we will be married twelve years in July - that fact still blows my mind!  He truly is my soul mate - he gets me and he actually puts up with me.  That is quite the feat, let me tell you! lol!  He is incredibly supportive of everything that I do and encourages me to take the plunge when I get one of my wild ideas.  I honestly don't know what I would do without him, he keeps me grounded.

We live in an incredibly small little city in Georgia, however, our hearts and our souls reside in another small little city in North Georgia - Tallulah Falls to be exact.  It is a dream of ours to move there and one that we hope to accomplish in the very near future.  When we are there I am at peace.  I can breathe.  There is an actual pull to be there, one that tugs at me each and every single day.

..............................................................................................................................................

I have always had a love for creativity - whether it was through photography, writing or with paper and glue.  I have always needed an outlet of some sort, whether it was just adhering photos of my friends to poster board or cutting photos out of magazines and making collages.  My grandmother gave me my very first camera at the age of 7 and I fell in love with taking photographs.  I took photography throughout my highschool years and hoped to make it my college major.  While that plan did not necessarily pan out, I still continued taking photos at every opportunity.  When my oldest daughter was born, I finally had a subject that couldn't get away from me!  lol!  It was then that I fell in love with scrapbooking - I finally had a place for all of my photos and and a way to document my daughter's life.

Five years ago I discovered the online world of scrapbooking and my passion for it grew tenfold.  Finally!  Others who loved it as much as I did!  My style evolved and grew into what it is now (although if you could name it for me that would be extremely helpful lol!)  Being able to combine my passion for photography and my love for scrapbooking has been incredibly fulfilling - the perfect creative outlet for me.

I have an addiction to patterned paper that should probably be treated in a twelve step program of some sort.  I love to create embellishments with it, tear it, layer it, distress it, ink it and mist it.  It's the bread and butter of my scrapbooking style.  Foam pop dots come in at a close second.  When I run out of those there is a moment where sheer panic takes over - it's not pretty.  I love adding dimension and texture to my layouts in every way possible - inking and stamping are techniques that I love to use to accomplish that.  I also love layering patterned paper - pretty much every. single. layout I create has layering of some sort.

On the Seventh Day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: California

Days 4 & 5: New Zealand

Day 6: Singapore

And today we are heading over to Poland to see our talented gal, Karola Witczak!

................................................................................................................

Hi, Prima friends! Karola Witczak here and I come to you with my Christmas traditions straight from Poland!

Karola christmas_karola

First of all you must know that everyone in Poland is waiting impatiently for Christmas, especially for our dreamed Christmas-it needs a lot of snow and frost! Christmas, inevitably, we associate with the snow, although the weather will not always give us such a gift. Then everyone is very, very disappointed! Fortunately, it seems that this year we will spend the holidays with a thick layer of snow outside the window - the children (and especially our Rose!) will have extreme fun when Christmas is really white!

I would love to tell you how we are celebrating Christmas in Poland. We are very traditional people and try to celebrate Christmas in a special way, although not everyone is deeply religious. Yet there are many traditions common to many families. I'll talk about these most important, also for my family. First of all - I must admit that the most beautiful Christmas ever we spent was when our daughter Rose was born. That was six years ago and definitely gave us a most beautiful and perfect gift for Christmas! Since then, every Christmas is particularly special for us and reminds us of those wonderful moments with our tiny daughter.

We begin to celebrate Christmas Eve supper on Dec. 24, evening (usually around 6 PM, when is darkness outside) Traditionally, Christmas Eve begins with the first star in the sky. This is a symbolic reference to the Star of Bethlehem, which means the birth of Jesus. It is pretty important, because then all the children in the family look out the window or go outside to look for the first star, when it appears - the whole family sits down at the table. Rose is always very happy when she sees the first star. She gives all the sign and everyone sits down to dinner. A gala dinner in this day we call Wigilia
Karola christmas-tree-karola

Before the start of Christmas Eve dinner, in the morning, there is a very merry mess in the house - moms cook and prepare food for dinner, which should be 12th dishes, and dad and kids go for Christmas tree, which should be always big and fresh. The children usually decorate it on Christmas Eve morning. Sometimes people prepare a Christmas tree a little earlier, but in my family it is usually done in a Christmas Eve day.

The first project that I would like to show you is associate with a traditional Polish Christmas tree - it's a small suitcase for Christmas gifts. Its colors - green, burgundy and gold are a traditional Polish Christmas colors. This suitcase, as the Christmas tree, is rich in ornaments, sparkles and is very decorative. I would not create it without absolutely incredible beautiful Prima flowers and vines!

........................................................................................................................................

In Poland we have many Christmas dishes, which are usually done only for this occasion, everyone is waiting for all year round to enjoy the taste of Christmas, it is so wonderful! Traditional Polish Christmas dishes should be twelve, and should be made with grains, poppy seeds, honey and mushrooms. Each family member should try each dish, which is to ensure happiness throughout the year. The most typical are: beetroot soup with dumplings (yummy!), fish cooked in various ways, the most traditional fried carp; cabbage with peas; cabbage and mushrooms; dumplings with cabbage, mushroom pies; chops with rice and mushroom sauce; noodles with poppy seeds, sugar and honey; compote of dried fruit; almond soup and many more!

My next Christmas project reminds me of my favorite Christmas dishes - beetroot soup and very popular Christmas gingerbreads, usually decorated by children in a lot of happy colors. The green, which we see here, reminds me of the green icing on gingerbreads of my grandmother! This is the photo frame, which is waiting on a photo of this year's gingerbreads!

...........................................................................................................................................

Another tradition in the Christmas Eve is carol singing. We love to sing carols and Christmas songs and we are delighted how quickly Rose learned all the major Polish Christmas carols! Under the Christmas tree are the presents, which brings (depending on the region) the child, star, angel, Mikolaj or Gwiazdor. Usually one of the men in the family (usually dad or grandpa) dresses up as Santa and comes to the house, giving gifts to everyone. (This is done after Christmas Eve dinner.) Christmas Eve is not a holiday (most people have a normal working day,) but in the Polish tradition- it IS a special day; from the gala dinner, a day celebrated festively and widely regarded as the most "family day" of the year (as I know in many countries Christmas Eve does not matter as much.) December 25 and 26 are the two holidays free from work and we spend them eating, walking, meeting with friends and family. These are two very calm and happy days when my little family cuddles on the couch; watch a lot of Christmas comedies, listen to our favorite music, eat tasty treats and have fun in the snow outisde.

Here's a project that is full of Madrigal Blossom - White Librett flowers - as white as our snow, and with Glistening Vines - Gold as golden as Christmas decorations in the our windows. The inscription is in in Polish and easilly says: Happy Christmas!

Thank you so much for letting me share with you my Polish Christmas traditions, this unique 12 Days of Christmas Around the World event gives me great joy, because it's truly wonderful to read how interesting and quite different we spend holidays around the world!

And I wish you a wonderful, peaceful, joyful, full of warmth and love in the air - Very Merry Christmas to everyone around the world!~Karola

On the Sixth Day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: California

Days 4 & 5: New Zealand

And today we are heading to Singapore to celebrate the holidays with our very own Leena Loh!

.......................................................................................................................................

Leena-Loh

We celebrate Christmas in Singapore in a big way like everyone else in the world. In fact, Christmas has become one of the most celebrated seasons by the people of Singapore over the years. It is the favorite time of the year as we start shopping for gifts as early as 2-3 months prior to Christmas!

The only difference between our Christmases here in Singapore and the other countries would be the weather. Our island is located very much near to the equator, so we don’t have 4 seasons like many of you would have. So, most times we would brave through the month of December in the heat and humidity climate, but that doesn’t stop the spirit of the people in Singapore celebrating Christmas without snow. But we are pretty lucky this year; the cold wind from the North region seems to be moving towards our country, so weather is cool with occasional shower and lower humidity.

Leena 2

One of the most visited places in Singapore where people throng the shopping malls is at Orchard Road in the city. The road stretches up to about 3km and both sides of the road are filled with huge malls, stores, restaurants and cafes. Weeks before Christmas in November, the city council would dress up the road with beautiful Christmas lightings and decors; brightly lighting up the road and malls into life. Each year they would dress up the road in different themes and people would stroll along the pavement on both sides of the road to take pictures of the beautifully lit up buildings and road. Each mall will also set up huge Christmas trees. They’re all beautifully decorated with bright, colorful lights and ornaments.

Leena Picture2-1

Our Christmas day tradition for my family and I would usually be spent at either at a friend’s place or our own for Christmas luncheon. We would indulge ourselves with lots of delicious spread of turkey, ham, roasted chicken, fresh vegetables and fruits salad, log cakes, desserts and wine, as well.

  Leena Picture3

We would also spread out our gifts for each other at the foot of the Christmas tree and after luncheon; we would start opening our gifts. The kids are usually the ones that get all happy and excited at opening their gifts, but the adults are equally excited as them too.

Leena Picture4

My boy, Ethan, would usually rush through his meal, and then sits and waits patiently for everyone to finish our meals before everyone gets to open the gifts. We really enjoy, and love, seeing his burst of excitement on his face when he opens his gifts and claims, “This is what I’ve always wanted!” *laugh* . We’re sure every parent enjoys seeing his or her kids at this moment of time.

Leena Picture5

And here is a Prima layout I created using Ethan’s photos when he opens up his gifts and the expression on his face.

On the Fifth Day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: California

Day 4: and New Zealand!

Well, for Day 5 we are going to stay on the island of New Zealand to visit one of our other talented gals, Trina McClune!

..........................................................................................................................................

Trinaimage001

Welcome to my Christmas 'downunder'. On the other side of the world, NZ has a warm and sunny Xmas! It's starting to be summer, and people are really beginning to relax as the end of another year draws near.

As a child, because of our summery Xmas I never felt that we had a 'real' Xmas. All the Xmas cards had designs showing robins on snow-laden branches and children wandering around in the snow. It just isn't like that here!

In the last few years NZ has taken its summery Xmas to a new level with our own summery versions of 'traditional' stories being written and told to our children. It's a fun way to enjoy the different way we celebrate.

One thing that is totally different is our Christmas trees. The branches on our trees all face the ceiling. I remember having an American exchange student here for Xmas one year and how disappointed she was that our tree branches weren't facing the floor. It was certainly an eye opener for me. We both assumed that something so simple would be the same the world over.

We also have a very special tree in NZ that is commonly known as NZ's Christmas tree. It is a beautiful native tree that grows around the coasts of our country, it's called the Pohutakawa. It flowers with the most stunning red flowers at Xmas time, thus the reference to being our Xmas tree. There is an old wive's tale that says the earlier the Pohutakawa's flower, the longer and hotter our summer will be.

Trina image001

Christmas lunch is usually comprised of:

  • cold meats (ham, chicken etc),
  • salads
  • freshly dug-up baby potatoes,
  • with strawberries and pavlova for desert.

Trina image002
(mini pavlova's made by my friend Jane)

So what does Christmas mean to my family and I? Lots and lots of tradition. Starting at the beginning of Dec. Our twins were born at the end of Nov, and that year, just one week later we went out to the Xmas tree padock and cut our tree down. Since then we've done this every year. We like to celebrate their birthdays Xmas free; then the following weekend, we go all out with Xmas.

  Trina image003

Another tradition we McClune's have is putting out food for Santa's reindeer. I make it up myself (oats, glitter, sequins) and just before bed, the children and I wander out into the backyard and spread it all over the ground. It's a lovely way to spend the evening watching the glitter sparkle on the ground as the kids get rid of their last bit of energy before Santa arrives. (It also helps if you then take out a vacuum cleaner or broom and sweep as much of it up as possible so it looks like its been eaten.)

  Trina image004

............................................................................................................................................

And now for some Christmas cheer Prima-style.....

I created this LO using a photo of my kids as they decorated the tree. I love the way they decorated themselves also!

Because our schools finish for the year just before Xmas (our school year goes from Feb - Dec), we often give the teachers gifts when school finishes. This year I scraplifted an idea from another Prima DTer- Nic Howard- and created these greeting cards which I've wrapped in ribbon and will give to the teachers as blank cards to use throughout the coming year...

  Trina image005

They are very simple cards, using gorgeous Prima products.

  • 536138 - Dynasty Ivory
  • 536107 - Dynasty Peridot
  • 535520 - Mini Rose

I also tried out a new recipe this year for popcorn balls. I then placed the balls into candy bags and tied them together with divine Prima ribbon, then hung them on the tree....

  Trina image006

(541415 - Prima Lace)

Popcorn Ball Recipe:

  • 3/4 cup light corn syrup (golden syrup for kiwis)
  • 1/4 cup margarine/butter
  • 2 teaspoons cold water
  • 2 5/8 cups confectioners sugar (icing sugar)
  • 1 cup marshmallows
  • 5 quarts (approx 20 cups) popcorn

Melt all ingredients in large saucepan. Heat and stir until it comes to the boil. Combine mixture with popcorn and coat each kernel.

Use butter or spray on oil to coat your hands, then quickly roll popcorn mixture into balls. Place onto grease-proof paper and wait to cool.

Wrap in candy bags, and join together with Prima ribbon. Then hang on your tree.

I hope this has given you a little insight into my Christmas 'downunder'. Merry Christmas, everyone! ~~Trina

Today we have a wonderful feature on one of our talented designers! Daniela Dobson is dubbed the queen of cards at Prima and always brings her gorgeous touches to every project she makes! Grab a cup of coffee, a chair and kick up your feet while Daniela shares about her family and scrapbooking with us.

My name is Daniela and I live in Dallas, TX. I moved here when I was 14, from Croatia, to live with my dad. I am a Registered Nurse and before I was a mom I worked in an Operating Room….that is where I met my husband, Peter.  We have a little boy, Alex, who will be 3 in January. He keeps me busy and my days are filled taking care of him. I am grateful that I am able to stay at home and watch him grow.

My love for art started at an early age and continues today. Serious paper crafting started about 7 years ago when my cousin had a baby girl. I haven't stopped since. I didn't make many layouts back then. I was just getting started and I was collecting supplies. I love making cards. They are easy and fast. I made Christmas cards in 2005 for family and friends and it just developed from there. When Alex was born I couldn’t wait to get those layouts started and record all those special moments. I love to paint and sew, and I taught myself how to quilt.

I don’t know what my style is. I change things up constantly. I love mixing different papers and patterns. I get overwhelmed with too many things, so I like to start with three or four things that go together (or not) and go from there. I love to work with scraps, or whatever is left over on my messy desk, especially for cards.

I love sketches and I love to draw. Sketch is my starting point, most of the time.  I draw sketches from my old work, magazines, clothing, food packaging… The fun part is that you can use the same sketch over and over and it will always look different. Sometimes cleaning my craft area will spark creativity. I find that long-lost favorite paper, or something I forgot I had and I start creating.

I take pictures daily and I never leave without my little camera. Alex takes one nap a day and that is my time to catch up on daily chores or scrapbooking. I like to stay up really late and that is when most of my work is done. I love to watch TV and (late) at night I love watch my favorite shows. Most of the time I am behind, but thanks to my DVR, everything is possible. I like to cook and bake, and at times try new recipes, but my little family has their favorites.

.........................................................................................................................................

I have always kept a record of my life, through journaling and photos. Scrapbooking allows me to combine those two. I don’t want to forget the important and not so important moments. I hope that through scrapbooking and making cards I can accomplish just that.

On the Fourth Day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: Indiana

Day 3: and California so far.

Today we are heading to New Zealand to celebrate the holidays with our very own Nic Howard!

..................................................................................................................

Nic

Hey there!  Thanks for joining me in this little journey through my New Zealand Christmas!

New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere which means it’s the total opposite in seasons for those of you living further North in the world!  It’s also opposite in daylight hours, with the longest day falling just before Christmas day; opposite in temperature, with Christmas being one of the warmest times of year; and even opposite in the school year – our children get out of school mid-December amongst cries of wooohoooo and yeeeeeha and they don’t go back until the start of February, as they celebrate the summer.

Christmas probably varies greatly for the people of New Zealand.  With summer comes the freedom of a lot of travel and most people take annual holiday time off work.  There are a few things that I know are traditional for most of us though.

  Nic H img 4

A few things that are top of the New Zealand tradition list are the Pohutukawa Tree and also strawberries!  The Pohutukawa tree is known as the New Zealand Christmas tree as it lines of the coastlines of New Zealand and bursts into festive crimson blossoms at Christmastime.

Strawberry season is in full swing at this time of year and everywhere there are BBQs with chocolate-dipped strawberries and desserts decorated with the biggest summer berries.

The night before Christmas is very relaxed for us.  As a family we always watch “The Polar Express” and hang stockings around the Christmas tree.  We go outside in the warm evening and sprinkle baking flour in a large circle on the lawn – Santa needs to see where to land!  We leave carrots and a bucket of water for his reindeer and Santa is left a plate of goodies, often including chocolate and beer – it’s hot work in the Southern Hemisphere!    The children go off to bed as early as we can get them to, although when it’s light until 9 pm, and often hot and humid, it’s a tough job to get to sleep!

Nic img 5

Christmas Day for us is all about family.  Christmas lunches and dinners often include lots of seafood, ham on the BBQ, salads, and gorgeous desserts.  The day is lazy and it’s all about catching up with people we don’t often see and celebrating the season.  The evening is especially casual for my family. It often is spent sitting in the sun, watching the kids riding their bikes, and having a few drinks with close friends and neighbours into the late hours.

Nic img 7

While Christmas is always a time to celebrate family, it is the weeks soon after that are the most celebrated time for the Howard family!  Like many other families we pack up the car, get a house sitter in, and leave home for 2 weeks and go to the beach.  We fish, play, swim and enjoy the company of good friends.  The coastlines are full of other people enjoying their summer under the shade of the famous New Zealand Pohutukawa tree as well.

While it’s a very relaxed event for the Howard home, I’m sure there are a few things that all New Zealanders enjoy.  I chose one of them, the Pohutukawa, to create a layout about.  Look at the smiles on this boy's face; he just loves the beach at Christmas-time!

On the Third Day of Christmas...

So far for our 12 Days of Christmas Around the World we have been to:

Day 1: New York

Day 2: and Indiana so far.

Today we are heading to California to celebrate the holidays with our very own Stacy Cohen!

Stacy Cohen 400x400

Hi, everyone!  Isn’t it fun to learn about everyone’s different holiday traditions? My family celebrates Hanukkah.  This year Hanukkah runs from December 2nd through December 9th, so the holidays are in full swing for us.  Every year we follow the established traditions of Hanukkah, like lighting the menorah, saying the prayers, playing dreidel, and opening presents on each of the eight nights.

But, in our family we have a very special Hanukkah tradition.  Every night after we light the menorah, we put on our favorite Hanukkah music and my husband, our daughters, and I all dance around the living room together.   I’m not talking about mellow dancing.  I’m talking about anything-goes-build-up-a-sweat-crazy-chicken dancing.   This is definitely one of our favorite family traditions – one that we will hopefully continue for years to come.   It’s usually just our little family of four, but if you happen to be invited to our house for Hanukkah dinner, you’d better bring your dancing shoes!!!

...........................................................................................................................................

Have you started your holiday shopping yet?  Gift cards are always very popular.  To make gift card giving a little more personal, you can make pretty card holders using the packaging from Prima flowers.

I made this first gift card holder using a long piece of printed cardboard packaging from Prima Vines (the packaging from the Scrapbook Jewelry would work).

Stacy cohen Hanukkah gift card holder 1

To make the flap closure, I made a fold about ½ an inch from the top.  Then I folded the remainder of the packaging in half.  I put Velcro dots on the inside of the flap so that it stays closed.   I added a Prima chipboard journaling sticker, lace and a rose to the outside.   Then I handcut the stars from other leftover Prima packaging and coated them with glitter.

I added a pocket on the inside to hold the gift card:

Products used:

  • Packaging from Vines, Jewelry, etc.
  • 841782 Annalee Avondale
  • 541613 Jack n’ Jill journaling sticker
  • 538620 Fairytale Roses
  • 541347 Lace

.............................................................................................................................................

I made this next gift card holder using the clear doily packaging from Prima flowers.  I hand-stitched two of them together, leaving the top side open so that the gift card can be inserted.  I added a pre-made Hanukkah embellishment and E-line crystals (product #300081.)

Happy Holidays!!  ~~Stacy

On the Second Day of Christmas...

We have...Indiana, Alyssa McGrew and Christmas:

Alyssa

Hi there!  Thanks for joining me for a little inside look at Christmas in the Midwest.  I live in Indiana, with my husband, Don, and 2 kids, ages 5 and 3. Our Christmas is a mixture of midwest  and family traditions, and lately we have been spending Christmas at home, just the 4 of us.  I love spending the day quietly, in our home, playing with the kids and snuggling on the couch.  (We visit extended family before or after Christmas for a celebration.)

The Christmas season here officially starts the weekend after Thanksgiving.  Many people send that weekend shopping for Christmas gifts and bringing out the Christmas decor.  At our house, this is the time to bring out the tree, hang the lights, and start playing Christmas music.

Alyssa Pumpkin Bar

In the weeks following, we make lots of Christmas goodies, like Pumpkin Bars, Candy Cane Cookies, and Apple Pies.  We also enjoy making lots of homemade cards and gifts- like scrapbook albums, Christmas tree ornaments, and wreaths.

Here is one of my Christmas Cards this year, made with Prima products (of course!)

Alyssa Joy Card

Supplies:
  • Angelique Papers 810290, 810276
  • Madrigal Blossoms 540128
  • Glistening Vines 543280
  • Alphabet 541798
Some of my favorite Christmas Lights hang inside the house:

Alyssa lights

Christmas Morning starts about 7 am with home-made cinnamon rolls, coffee, and milk.  Then we read the Christmas story from the Bible together.  Then it is time to open gifts!  We enjoy opening one at a time, so each person can enjoy their gifts without missing what the others are opening.

After gifts and some play time, it's time for "Christmas Cuddles", which involves a Christmas movie, blankets, and time snuggled together on the couch.

At our house, we like to take the day slowly, savoring the moments and enjoying family time.  The hustle and bustle of holiday travel happens before and after Christmas, but that day is reserved just for the four of us to enjoy each other and remember the meaning of Christmas.  And that is EXACTLY how I like it!

Thanks for joining me for Prima's 12 Days of Christmas!  I hope you've enjoyed this little peek into Christmas in the Midwest.  I can't wait to read more about Christmas in the homes of the DT gals and I hope you will join me all month long for the fantastic tour.  Please feel free to stop by my blog anytime- www.alyssasscraps.blogspot.com !

On the First Day of Christmas...

December is here and that means lots of celebrating! We will be having very special posts through-out the month as we travel around the world with our talented design team to show you how they celebrate during the holidays.

First up: New York, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, and Hanukkah/Christmas!

Julie

"I am part of a family that is a mixture of religions, races, and cultures.  And I live in a city (New York City) that is also a great mash up of religions, races, and cultures.  For me, Christmas and Hanukkah have always been linked by family, food, and ritual.  In the grand scheme of things Hanukkah is not actually a big Jewish holiday. It happens to coincide with Christmas, and that has kind of made it
into a big deal here in the U.S.  For those who may not know, Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem in 165 BC.  Although there was only enough
consecrated oil to burn for one day, the oil lasted for eight!  To celebrate, we light a candle for each of those eight days.  When I was growing up we used to gather around the menorah each of the eight
nights, sing the blessing over the candles, and my brother and I would both receive a present.  The eight presents were always small things -- sort of stocking stuffer-like gifts. On the years where Hanukkah
and Christmas overlapped, we would tear into our Christmas presents in the morning and light the candles in the menorah in the evening.

Nowadays it's just my husband and I.  We don't really exchange gifts for either holiday.  Instead we write love letters.  Just a little something to say how thankful we each are, how proud, how lucky -- how very blessed."

Julie is starting our Christmas Around the World celebration with a sweet project she made. Since her family celebrates both Hanukkah and Christmas, Julie created a layout showing how they blend them.

Journaling:

"In our family we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. We have a Christmas tree right next to the menorah. I've always enjoyed being part of a blended family that embraces our different cultures and traditions and melds them together."

 A few notes:

• Julie cut the shapes for the menorah and the Christmas tree from
patterned paper and adhered them to white cardstock.  Then she used
black thread to stitch around the edges of the shapes.  Next-cut the
shapes out and adhere them to the layout.  The layer of cardstock
creates some nice dimension.
• use foam adhesive to give dimension to the photo.
• Outline the letters with a gold pen for a royal touch.

Stay tuned as we travel from New York to Indiana tomorrow!
