Pretty Prima Patterned Paper

Don't forget our Live with Prima class tonight at 6:30 PST! We will be making a few Prima-filled layouts filled with wonderful texture.

Sharon smilelo

All the details can be found right here.
You can watch right here.
Sharon will be teaching. Cari will be moderating. We will have tons of fun AND we always pick a lucky winner at the end of the show, so come check it out!

.........................................................................................................................................

Now on to a few amazing layouts specially made for you from our talented designer, Julie Balzer. Julie will show us a fun, new way to use lovely Prima patterned papers!

Julie ASenseOfMischief-sm

Julie Balzer creates a stunning pinwheel effect with patterned paper on this lovely layout.. What a fabulous way to mix lots of patterns and colors...AND use up those paper scraps you've been saving!

Julie ASenseOfMischiefDetail1-sm

A few tips from Julie:

  • Dye the lace black using spray ink.
  • The sunburst design of the patterned paper was created by cutting random long triangles and laying them next to each other until a circle was completed. Clip off the excess paper that hangs off of the edges.
  • Use a “blanket stitch” on your sewing machine to create the outside border.

A Sense of Mischief Supplies:

  • Patterned Paper: Prima (#843014, 843052, 843038, 842970)
  • Sequins: Prima (#535131)
  • Lace: Prima
  • Alphas: Prima (#544225)

.....................................................................................................................................................

Julie DressFormCanvas-sm

Julie used the same technique on this gorgeous canvas wall hanging.

Julie DressFormCanvasDetail2-sm

Dress up your doll-form Prima-style...then add to the gorgeous sunburst paper effect for a lovely customized piece for your studio!

Julie DressFormCanvasSideView-sm

Wrap the paper around the sides for a professional finish.

Tips from Julie:

  • Draw out the background stripes with a pencil and then cut strips
  • to fit the canvas.  Be sure to wrap the ends of papers all the
  • way around the canvas for a finished edge.
  • Rub grey Distress Stickles into the cracks between papers to
  • add a sparkly grout.
  • Draw the dress form on the backside of cardstock with a pencil and
  • then cut it out.  Stictch the clothes directly onto the dress form
  • (including the lace collar and the pleated skirt).  Once the mannequin
  • is fully dressed adhere her to the canvas with foam adhesive, for a
  • bit of a lift.
  • Stamp the tag and then wash over the image with gesso.  Paint along the edge, add some embellishments and feed it through a typewriter.
  • Splash the background canvas with the same turquoise
  • paint used to write “create.”  It helps to tie it all together!

Supplies:

  • Patterned Paper: Prima (#841461, 813178, 841515, 841102, 813147, 841119)
  • Sequin Centers: Prima (#535216)
  • Rhinestones: Prima (#530914)
  • Stamp: Prima
  • Lace: Prima

Get your mask on!

Go grab your mists, chalks, inks or sprays and get your mask on!

Our masks make such a huge impact on projects with very little effort! And the results are stunning! Prima has a wide variety of images that you can choose from, including borders, frames and background designs...

Today, we are sharing a couple of samples using the background masks from some of our Design Team members. One has a softer, more subtle effect that enhances the overall design, while the other has been designed using a bold color scheme that adds depth and texture.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Julie Fei-Fan Balzer used a 12x12 mask, over white cardstock for the background of this layout. She used a mix of colorwash sprays over the image, to create a bold color scheme. The variety of colors added a lot of depth and texture to the overall look of this layout. Simply gorgeous!

  • 921361-Elle Collection
  • 537432-Alphabet
  • 541972-Fairy Flora Notecards
  • 921392 Cabachon Lace

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anabelle O'Malley created this beautiful layout, using a fun color combination and background mask to highlight her photo from CHA. She lightly misted over the mask for a softer look that enhances the design of her layout. The further you spray from your page, the lighter the color will be, allowing you to control the boldness of the masked image.

We just love how Anabelle used the crystal leaves over the masked image! They work perfectly together!

Message in a bottle....

Today, we are sharing a gorgeous project made by Ingvild Bolme...

She altered a glass bottle with Prima products, turning it into a stunning piece of art, with a secret message inside....

..........................................................................................................................................................

Notice the intricate details and ornate embellishments, that make this project truly unique. A treasure worth displaying anywhere in your home...

Ingvild bottle2

Ingvild carefully stamped the outside of the bottle, using our clear background stamp, Documentary. Then, she embossed the image, bringing out the details of the stamp. The embossing effect gives the bottle a vintage/rustic look...

  Ingvild bottlefront2

The main embellishment on the front of the bottle, was created using found objects and a Prima chipboard journaling piece. We love how the teal compliments all of the warm brown hues, that surround it.

 Ingvild bottleinside

The beaded vine was carefully wrapped around the outside of the bottle and notice some of the beads were colored to match the color scheme of the project. A nice little extra added touch! You can also see the message on the inside of the bottle, with a little Vintage Trinket birdcage dangling just below.

 Ingvildblog1

The top of the bottle is adorned with dangling accents, including a custom tag, that invites anyone to open it. The chain embellishment is the perfect addition to the tag.

Prima products used to create this project:

  • 543242-Winter Branch-Grape
  • 920760-Screenprinted Tags-Blue
  • Clear Stamp-Documentary
  • 930059-Vintage Trinkets

Designer Day: Come Meet Jamie Dougherty!

Today we have a fabulous designer from the states to introduce you to! Jamie Dougherty not only does gorgeous layouts, she is just as amazing with mixed media and altered projects. We are very excited to introduce you to her!

Hello everyone, my name is Jamie Dougherty and I live in Southern California with my husband and our two children,  I am blessed with the opportunity to work on my art full time while being there for my kids.

My children are my rock!  They keep me busy but they are the joys of my life.  They are a true source of inspiration.  So thankful for them.

And here is the love of my life and my best friend.  It takes me the effort of pulling teeth to get him to stop for a picture so, as you can see, this one is a couple of years old- lol.  He supports me in everything I do, even if he thinks I'm crazy for doing it.

I grew up and now raise our family here in Ramona, CA.  Ramona is know as the "Valley of the Sun".   It's a small town east of San Diego.  Even though we live in the country, we are still in driving distance to everything.  We can make a day trip to the beach, the desert, or the mountains with in an half an hour drive.

There is a lot of open space here.  Beautiful scenery to inspire any artist.  So much of the land is still used for grazing cattle, orchards and farms.  We are the backcountry with convenience :)
I love walking down main street and visiting our many antique shops,  Karlie and I go on trips to find babbles and trinkets to use on projects.  Well she usually is on the look out for anything resembling a horse.

I love the history of where I grew up. It is one of the first towns settled in Southern CA during the gold rush.  Many of the main buildings still stand today with the help of our community.

As a family we love to go to the river, riding in the boat, playing on the beach or offroading with the ATVS.  We spend a lot of time with my parents and I feel blessed to be so close to them.

These are pictures I took while on the Colorado River.  The perfect sunset.

I was raised around many different talented and artistic people who were very encouraging and supportive, and always teaching me new skills in arts and crafts.  When I reached high school my main focus became painting and sculpting. Life has taken over and my love for art took a backseat to family, but when my daughter was born in 2003 I decided to begin scrapbooking, taking those memories and journaling them for future generations.
Like everyone my style  has morphed and expanded since I began.  Recently I went back to my roots of fine arts and meld my two passions together.  Bringing my paper arts into my fine mixed media skills.  My style is eclectic and varies on the design and subject I'm creating for, I don't limit myself with a label.  I love to step outside of the box and push my limits.  I enjoy teaching others the skills I have learned and created and inspiring others to find their own styles and creativity.

I created this Lo using the Back Stage Paper Collection (formerly Moulin Rouge.)  The picture is of an antique sewing machine I was given, that had belonged to my Great Grandmother.  I think this paper line fits the pictures perfectly.  The deep colors and rich design reminds me of the design and style of the sewing machine itself.

Products Used:
  • 842093-Back Stage Collection-LaChat
  • 842109-Back Stage Collection-Venue-Paper
  • 544515-SIIC Flower embroidered swirl
  • 549749-Vintage Trinkets Metal Flower
  • 549046-Sugar Blooms Reflections-flowers
  • 547165-Birdsong Collection Script-paper birds
  • 544218-Alphabets
  • 921163-Donna Downey Swirl Foam Stamp
I am in LOVE with the new Vintage trinkets line.  They can be used for so many different projects and can be altered to fit your needs.  I used Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze to color the trinkets on this necklace.  I used the back to an old clock and layered my pieces on top of it.  The contrast of the silver chain, I think makes the flower centers stand out.
An Arco Iris Flower altered with Glimmer Glaze, is the finishing touch.
Products Used:
  • 549725-Vintage Trinkets-large flower and smaller flower with leaves.
  • 930028-Vintage Trinkets-Lace flower
  • 545505-Lace Alencon Collection
  • 544379-Arco Iris Flowers

I hope you enjoyed learning more about me and getting to know more about the way I look at art.  Remember to take the time to look around, inspiration is everywhere.  Hugs, Jamie

Check out more of Jamie's work right here on her blog!

Designer Day: Come Meet Julie Fei-Fan Balzer!

TinyHat-sidelook
Hi!  My name is Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and I live in New York City – Times Square to be exact!

MyStreet (Sorry for the blurry photo, but that's NYC -- always in motion!)

On my street (pictured above) there are two Broadway theatres, Roseland (a famous nightclub/dance hall), lots of restaurants -- including two that specialize in Russian food and homemade vodka, a hotel, four apartment buildings, a theatrical scene shop, a garage, a bank, a large office building, and a defunct subway stop.

This is the view, at night, from the other end of my street looking down Broadway:

TimesSquare
If you were to turn around you'd see the Ed Sullivan theatre where David Letterman records his TV show plus lots more theatres and restaurants and enormous office buildings!

My husband and I have been married for four years...

Kiss
...and together we live in a two-bedroom apartment in the sky (okay, it’s only the seventeenth floor).  But this is our vertigo inducing view down to the street:

View
Bet you didn't know that street corners are actually round in NYC!

And the view from our terrace looking out towards the Hudson River on a particularly lovely sunset:

Sunset2
When we moved in to this apartment my sweet hubs told me to take the master bedroom as my craft room.  What a nice guy, right?

BasicRoom
(By the way: It never looks this neat.  Most of the time it's full of piles and piles of stuff!)

And this is my best storage solution ever:

Hangingwall-close
I hung a bunch of those grids from those cheap buildable wire cube things you get at Target and then all of my embellishments are grouped by category (journaling spots, border strips, etc.), hung on giant book rings, and then clipped to the grid wall.  I can see what I've got and never have have to go hunting!

I'm not a native New Yorker.  I grew up outside of Boston (and still root for the Red Sox and against the Yankees!)  I moved to New York City to work in the theatre – I’m a theatrical director – and have directed plays all over New York for the past eleven years.  But 2011 is a new beginning for me.  I am happily transitioning into doing more and more art and craft work!

Makingart-sm
And, of course, I love teaching live online classes for Live with Prima every month!

Me&RondaP-sm
As you can see, I like to paint, spray, and stitch whenever I can.  I was shocked and delighted when Prima took a risk and made me and my off-beat style a part of this design team.

Fierce-sm
I have so enjoyed being a part of the Prima family for the past two years!  I particularly love all the fun alterable products that Prima makes like this cool canvas camera bag:

Please visit my blog: Balzer Designs to see more colorful painty fun!  I post ideas, projects, and tutorials daily and I have a new online course in mixed media stitch called It's Sew Easy starting at the end of this month!

Thanks for letting me share!

I love making old things new and in this class, we're doing exactly that! We're going to take an old book and rip it apart and turn it into something new! There's so many pages to put photographs and add journaling in this book. It's going to be a ton of fun filling it up. So, make sure you head out to the thrift store or antique store and grab an old book! Hope to see you gals at the class!

Instead  of  scrapbooking  the  vacation  after  the  fact,  why  not  scrapbook  the  vacation  along  the  way?    In  this  class  Julie  will  show  you  how  to  create  an  amazing  album  full  of  pockets!    Pockets  that  are  perfect  for  storing  all  the  things  you  collect  on  a  vacation  –  ticket  stubs,  brochures,  receipts,  etc.    We’ll  even  add  journaling  cards  for  each  day  of  your  trip  so  that  all  you  need  to  do  is  bring  along  a  pen!
