How To Tuesday

Today design team member Kim Kesti shares a tutorial for creating your own patterned buttons using Pebbles patterned paper.  Here's what Kim had to say ... "I wanted to share a little tutorial with you today on DIY buttons. I adore using buttons on my cards and layouts and sometimes I want something a little more customized than what my button jar has to offer. Enjoy!”

I’m going to show you different buttons - for the first you will need clear buttons, paper scraps and Glossy Accents adhesive.

Just drop a dab of glue (smaller than a dime) on your paper and firmly press your clear button right on top. Some of you probably already know this trick, but I always love how fresh it looks with new patterned paper styles.

After the glue dries (it dries really clear), just trim around the edge with your scissors. Easy peasy.

For the second button style, punch same sized circles from thin chipboard and patterned paper. I used a 1” circle punch.  Again, drop a dab of glue on the chipboard and adhere the patterned paper. Also, add some Glossy Accents to the top of the patterned paper for a pretty shine. Let dry and added your “buttonholes” with a paper piercer.

Here’s a card I created using both types of my DIY buttons. They add such a unique little flair to my creations.

Here’s a tag I whipped up using the chipboard button a little differently. I layered it with a brad and used it to fasten my tag. It almost looks like real wood, doesn’t it? Fun.  Thanks for following along – try making your own custom buttons, it’s so much fun!

More "Scraplifted" Projects with Suzanne and I

Design team member Suzanne Sergi lifted fellow team member Laura Craigie.  Here's what Suzanne had to say ... "I fell in love with Laura's 'sugar cookie' scrapbook page. I loved the strong graphic feel to her page, and the clean lines throughout. The bold title created in the middle of the page was one of my favorite elements. She has a fabulous ability to create strong, and striking pages with few embellishments. So, she also inspired my title for my page of my daughter. I also picked up on her cue, on creating simple borders along my 4x6 photo. A few floral embellishments, and tags rounded out my page, using the colorful Fresh Goods collection. Love Laura's style, and the layout above was definitely on my list to scraplift!"

I (Lynn Ghahary) also found inspiration from design team member Laura Craigie.  I loved how Laura created the open circles on the lower portion of her layout and only filled in some of them with patterned paper.  I used the same idea on my layout but replaced the circles with hearts (cut with my Silhouette) to coincide with my Valentine's Day cupcakes.

More "Scraplifted" Projects with Ashley and Melanie

Design team member Ashley Stephens scraplifted fellow team member Sarah Webb.  Here is what Ashley had to say ... "For this week's challenge, I chose to scraplift this beautiful page by Sarah Webb. I'm always very drawn to the way she chooses to group elements, and this page was a perfect example. I love how she placed her title near the bottom of the page, the way she used little strips of paper under her photos, and her clustered embellishments. I changed it up just a little bit, choosing to group my photos with the title, but I kept the general layout the same."

I love how my layout turned out. I hope you are inspired to look through the blog and select a few projects to scraplift."

More "Scraplifted" Projects with Christa, Valerie, and Jill

Design team member Christa Paustenbaugh scraplifted a layout from fellow team member Mandie Pierce.  Here's what Christa had to say ... "I have been a huge fan of Mandie Pierce's since before she was on the Pebbles design team and always love all her layouts!  I chose the 'Dear California' because I adored the simple block design and the larger photo.  I swapped out a large photo and made room for 3 smaller ones in mine.  I kept with the same general design of hers: title on top, journaling on bottom and prominent embellishment on the right side, and just switched up a few other items for embellishment."

Design team member Valerie Mangan lifted team mate Laura Craigie.  Here's what Val had to say ... "I'm a huge fan of Laura Craigie and was instantly drawn to this layout.  I love the blocks of pattern on the background, the linear design, the bright color and the white space. Her design was easily adapted into a 12 x 12 format. I used a strip of 3 vertical photos across the lower third, maintaining the white space at the top. I didn't stray far from Laura's design and placed my embellishments in a similar fashion for balance. Thanks for the inspiration Laura!"

Design team member Jill Cornell was inspired by a recent tutorial from fellow team member Christa Paustenbaugh.  Here's what Jill had to say ... "I was very inspired by Christa Paustenbaugh's layout she created for a recent "How-To Tuesday" blog post in January. I loved the butterfly shape that she made using her Silhouette and patterned paper strips. I created this two-page layout using the same technique on my apple. I selected patterned papers with red in them so that I had a monochromatic look to help the apple blend more into the page design. Because the apple was a central part of the design, I kept the rest of my layout fairly simple with minimal embellishments."

More "Scraplifted" Projects with Stephanie and Eva

Design team member Stephanie Baxter was inspired by our recent guest designer Nicole Samuels.  Here's what Stephanie had to say ... "“I was super inspired by this layout by guest designer Nicole Samuels. I just love the title work going down the length of the page and the way she used those fabulous heart-shaped Candy Dots. I changed the page to an 8.5x11 but kept the focus on the title by letting it span the length of the page like on Nicole’s and mixing and matching the different alphabet stickers. I love the fact that it allows the title to do the job of the journaling too, without having to leave an extra space to write anything extra. I think I’ll definitely be trying some more big titles in the future...it’s so fun!”

"There are so many cute layouts here on the blog! but one that caught me eye was this one from Elizabeth Carney, I love the white space and the overall design of the page. I adapted this double page to a 12 x 12 page by trimming the white zone in the middle. I pretty much kept the design elements the same but I changed up the colour scheme and the title position."

Theme: Scraplift a Design Team Member

Happy Monday everyone!  This week on the Pebbles blog it's all about scraplifting!  What is "scraplifting" you ask?  Scraplifting is the the act of "lifting" or copying ideas and/or designs from another person’s scrapbook page to use in your own pages.  Designs or ideas can be copied in whole or in part.  And most importantly be sure to give credit where credit is due.  If you do "lift" someone else's idea be sure to mention where the idea originated.  I've asked some of our design team members to "scraplift" their fellow teammates.

Design team member Gretchen McElveen decided to "lift" a layout by design team member Melanie Blackburn.  Here's what Gretchen had to say ... "I struggle with using two horizontal pictures on a page. Two vertical ones I can handle and 3 horizontal, no problem! But two horizontal pictures stump me! So when I say how Melanie Blackburn used the two pictures on this layout I knew I had to scraplift it to finally scrap these two pictures I have had printed for a while now! The pictures are vertical on her layout so I just turned her layout to the right and viola! Now the pictures are horizontal! And then I just scraplifted from there! Thank you Melanie for the inspiration!!"

" I was so excited for this blog assignment…because I knew there were SO many wonderful projects to choose from – I am surrounded by such talented women on this design team!  It took me a long time to decide which project to scraplift…but I finally decided on this cute card by Christa.   I love the clean and simple design, and knew it would be the perfect scheme to use as a starting point for this set of gender-neutral (because I never have enough BOY cards on hand)birthday cards.  Thanks for the inspiration, Christa!"

Happy Friday everyone! We are wrapping up the week with a "free for all" project from design team member Valerie Magnan.  Here's what Valerie had to say ... Sketchy Thursday

For today's edition of "Sketchy Thursday" I asked some of our design team members to create a project based on this fabulous sketch by Becky Fleck.

Design team member Anna Sigga made this sketch her own on this fun layout.  Here's what Anna had to say ... "Sketches are so much fun to work with and an excellent mojo-booster. I really like the general set-up of the sketch so i kinda went with the flow. I started by looking at the sketch for a while, then put it aside and created my layout and keeping in mind those points I liked about the sketch. My layout may not look exactly like the sketch but the inspiration if 100% from the sketch."

Whip It Up Wednesday

For today's post I challenged some of our design team members to "whip up" a project using Pebbles products in 30 minutes or less. Check out these fabulous projects that can be created in no time at all!

Design team member Aphra Bolyer created this fun layout in no time at all with a little planning and great use of Pebbles embellishments.  Here's what Aphra had to say ... "I knew that completing a layout in less than 30 minutes was going to be a little challenging for me, so I decided to do a little planning.  First, I dug through my supplies to see what might inspire me.  I was immediately drawn to the With Love Gift Tags.  Then, I remembered seeing a card with a tag hanging from twine.  That was the spark I needed.  I drew a quick sketch, printed out a couple of pics, set my timer, and got to work.  To keep me on track, I didn't let myself think too much.  I just enjoyed the process!"

Pebbles supplies used:
Fresh Goods Flower Basket (751183)
Fresh Goods Signage (751186)
Fresh Goods Window Display (751189)

Fresh Goods Chipboard Flowers (747155)
Fresh Goods Fabric Brads (744277)

With Love ABC 2 Stickers (732082)
With Love Gift Tags (747160)

Other supplies used:

Cardstock (American Crafts)
Baker's Twine (Doodlebug Designs)

Design team member Mandie Pierce created not one but two projects!  Here's what Mandie had to say about her first project ... "I was going through a box of photos that I have yet to scrapbook.  I found my middle child's 1st birthday photos.  How have I not scrapbooked these?!  I chose 2 favorites and then put the rest into a divided page protector to go in the album next to the layout.  Using just a couple of photos, simplifies the process for me. I don't feel so overwhelmed with the number of photos.  Another trick I use for quick layouts is to make a basic blocked layout.  It doesn't necessarily need to be a square.  I typically make layouts with blocks of photos paired with blocks of pattern paper.  It makes for a quick layout!"

How To Tuesday

First things first, I have a winner to announce from last week's "Guest Designer" giveaway. Thank you all so much for your comments. And the lucky winner is ...

Congratulations! Please email your full name and mailing information (including your phone number for shipping purposes) to pebblesincdt(at)gmail(dot)com and put "Guest Designer Winner" in the subject line.

Today design team member Laura Craigie shares a fun technique for creating pleated borders.  Here's what Laura had to say ... "For today's how to, I want to share something simple that I just love to do!  When I'm making projects and I end up with strips of cardstock or patterned paper, I usually do a quick stapled pleat and tuck it aside to use on a later project.  I love doing this as it saves those long scraps from the recycle box for me, and makes for a easy quick element on a future card or page."

First, cut paper into a one inch strip.

Next, I like to score my paper to make the pleats all the same size, but there is certainly a whimsy in just folding by eye too.  For the score pleats I score the width of the pleat I want, and then the next score is half of that size, and repeat.  So if I want a one inch pleat I score at one inch, and then half an inch later, then one inch, etc.

Then, fold your scored lines to form the pleats.

A quick way to keep the pleats together is to staple them.  I love my Tiny Attacher for this purpose :)  I usually tuck the pleats under another element to hide the staples.

Finally, admire the pretty paper pleats you have made, and scraps you have saved, then put them to use on your next page or card.

Mix & Match Monday

It's Monday again, which means we'll be mixing and matching some Pebbles products to show you just how well our collections can be used with one another.

Design team member Gretchen McElveen mixed several Pebbles collections together to find just the right color scheme for her sports themed layout.  Here's what Gretchen had to say ... "Who says you have to have sports-themed products to do a sports layout?!! These pictures have a lot of red and blue in them so I immediately reached for the Fresh Goods line to get me started. The With Love line has some great red in it too and it coordinates well with Fresh Goods. I used the tiny dotted paper from With Love (With Love Be Mine) to punch a few stars and used the red alphabets for my title. I ended up using 2 sheets of paper from the Happy Go Lucky line for the background of this 2-page layout. The light blue patterned paper made for a good, subtle contrast to the other colors in this layout. I like how this non-sporty sports layout ended up turning out!"

Design team member Stephanie Baxter used her stash of Pebbles products to create this layout for her Project Life album.  Here's what Steph had to say ... "For 2012 I decided to jump on the Project Life bandwagon in an attempt to capture more of the everyday moments of my life. For this project, I love using my favourite scrapbooking supplies, and that includes using lots of bits and pieces from my Pebbles stash! Week 3 was a difficult week to document for me, but I still wanted to keep it quite light by choosing bright, happy colours to try and lift my mood. I used some goodies from the Fresh Goods and Floral Lane along with the With Love collection...I'm ok with using lovey dovey Valentine's collections to document life's heartbreaks!!"

Guest Designer: Stacey Michaud and a GIVEAWAY!

Hi everyone! I am so excited to introduce you to this week's Guest Designer Stacey Michaud.  Let's get to know Stacey a little better ...

Describe yourself in 3 words … reflective, driven, moody.

My guilty pleasure is … reality TV in the form of The Bachelor, Project Runway and Top Chef.  I can’t forget dark chocolate.  Usually, those two things go together.

You’ll never find me without … my iPhone!  It keeps me organized, allows me to have constant email options and provides entertainment for my children.  Plus, I can get Pinterest anytime I want!

You might be surprised to know that I … am reserved and a bit anxious about new experiences.  Once I am comfortable, I am an extrovert.  Getting me there is another story.

My least favorite chore is … doing the dishes.  I worked out an agreement with my husband - I cook, he cleans.

I started scrapbooking in . . . 2004 when I cut every picture using scalloped-edged scissors.

My favorite thing about this hobby is
. . . being able to journal and share all of our stories.

If I were a Pebbles product I would be
… chipboard - lots of layers, each with a different color and pattern.

Stacey created so many amazing projects for us including this playful layout about her and her husband.  Here's what Stacey had to say ... "I was instantly drawn to the speech bubbles, coming up with the idea to do a layout about my husband.  We are constantly engaging in a playful banter.  I layered a couple of the Dimensional Stickers to given my photo a mat and to provide dimension.   I love how the products from With Love and Fresh Goods coordinate!"

Here's what Stacey had to say about her next project ... "I always appreciate a good sheet of ledger paper to serve as the background paper!  The banner is hand cut from the Fresh Goods Signage paper and layered on the bright yellow and wood grain patterns.  I love how it adds a curve and helps to connect the two photos, which I used on opposite sides of the page."

Here's what Stacey had to say about her next project ... "I have these cute shots of my kiddos in their super hero costumes.  It has been difficult to find a good line to match the strong primary colors, but the Fresh Goods collection solved that problem.  I cut the chevron pattern to add as an interesting top border.  The “Having You” banner was taken from one of the Dimensional Word Stickers.  I placed banner flags underneath."

And last, but certainly not least, Stacey created this amazing mini album along with step by step instructions.  Here's what Stacey had to say ... "With all the glorious embellishments that Pebbles has, I wanted to create a mini-album about all the things my family currently loves!  When I saw the Kraft envelopes, I knew they would make perfect pages!  After wallpapering the Kraft with patterned paper,  I simply adhered the outside flap of one envelope to the back of another and repeated to make my pages. However, it was nice to let go of some of the inhibition and actually do something about in relation to
the two of us. I honestly don't think I can get enough of the Pebbles With Love collection because it is neutral and subtle yet has pops of sweet patterns and colours, not to mention the gorgeous embellishments and matte cardstock alphas. I created the heart using a handful of different alpha

Design team member Aphra Bolyer created this eye catching layout all about her son's love for dirt!  Here's what Aphra had to say ... "For this week's Love Is In the Air theme, I decided to see if I could use Pebbles fabulous With Love line in a non-traditional way.  When I stumbled across this photo of my son digging in the dirt, I knew I could make it work.  To keep the focus of my layout on the cute picture of my son, I cut radiating strips of patterned paper.  After so many different patterns, the layout didn't need much embellishing.  A couple of cute flags, tags, butterflies, and stickers."

Theme: Love Is In The Air

Happy Monday everyone!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  This week on the Pebbles blog I have asked some of our design team members to create projects with a love theme just in time for Valentine's Day.

Design team member Mandie Pierce created this love themed layout about her children.  Here's what Mandie had to say ... "I love these photos of my kiddos.  I took them right before we moved away from Arkansas.  They represent a particular time in our life for me and hold a special place in my heart.  I came across them when going through a box of un-scrapped photos.  I can't believe it has been nearly 3 years since I took the photos.  And DEFINITELY can't believe how much bigger and grown up looking my kids are now versus then.  It makes my heart sad and proud all at once! Free For All Friday

Happy Friday everyone! We are wrapping up the week with a few "free for all" projects from some of our design team members.

Design team member Laura Craigie created this super sweet layout about her boys using lots of goodies from our Fresh Goods collection.  I love that Laura quickly created a card with the scraps from her layout.  Here's what Laura had to say ...  "I wanted to document the relationship between my oldest boys, and how I really hope one day they realize they could be so much more if they worked together rather than fighting.  Tell me I'm not alone with fighting siblings.. ?!  When I make layouts, most of the time I grab the scraps and put them to use on a card right away.  I have a design already chosen and it makes the card come together in minutes.  Love that!"
