Journaling Advice

HI Brandin. It's Anabelle here with some journaling advice. Now, I'm probably not the one to be giving it you, since your journaling is already so heartfelt and wonderful. I usually struggle with it. Not because I don't have something to say, but because I always leave it for last and run out of room to put it! I love embellishing my pages, I love focusing on the photos, but when it comes to journaling I usually just stick it in there where I can fit it. That being said, there are a couple of strategies that I like to use. First, like Lucy, I enjoy handwritten journaling. I think it will be really meaningul to Ryan to see my writing on the pages in years to come. I just ran across a recipe my grandmother had written and just seeing it brought back a flood of memories. Another tip that I use a lot is hidden journaling. I like to write on tags and tuck them behind photos or in decorated envelopes.

I know that whatever you create this week will ,once again, be awesome!

HI Brandin. It's Ellen here with some journaling advice, too. Your journaling has been so amazing since you started this process. I have admired it so much because I have a hard time with it. I have a hard time expressing myself in general so I guess it starts from there. I would definitely do as much handwriting journaling as you can but I do love to use my computer, too. Variety is good! I have to admit, that sometimes as I type the words come easier for me. One thing I love to do is interviews and getting other people's perspectives on the event and photo. I know whatever process you choose it will be perfect. This has been such an extraordinary journey so far! Good Luck!

Assignment 8: Use Creative Journaling

Good Morning, Brandin! Lucy here, with your assignment for Week 8 - Create a Layout with Creative Journaling. You have already shown creativity in your journaling so far - so this will be an easy assignment for you!

Congrats on your successful 'about me' page! I know just what you mean about no photos of 'me'.....something for all of us to think about. :)

About this week's assignment: Telling the story is such an important part of scrapbooking but often I feel I fall into the trap of what do I say? What can I say besides, I love you and this is what you were doing here?

Here are a couple of suggestions to get you started:

Let your children tell the story and write it down in their words. Or if they are able to write - let them, their handwriting will be so precious to you on a page.

Do an interview - you could even do the journaling like a Q&A.

Make a list - I think I mentioned this in the about you assigment. But a list of the persons favorites is always fun to look back on. Or to go with a certain age: for example - at 1 year you could do this.

Format your journaling in an interesting way - I loved the way you created a 'tag cloud' on your page for the color challenge, Brandin. Mixing fonts and colors is a great way to make your journaling interesting and incorporate it into your layout.

Hidden journaling - sometimes you have more to say or personal journaling than you don't want to put on the page so hidden journaling can be used - a flap that lifts up - a letter in a decorative envelope - even write on the back of the page and just put some basic facts on the front.

Incorporate your journaling into the page design - I often hand write my journaling and just follow the outside edge of the page or elements in the design - with a word wrap. It's subtle and doesn't overtake the design. Here is an example of where I journaled around the outside edge of the page:

Music-of-my-heart-sm

Handwritten vs. typed or computer generated journaling. There are so many opinions on this - I love how you have embraced your handwriting on your pages! For a long time I worried about messing up a page with a mistake, but now just try to go with it. Handwriting is part of you and will be treasured by your children later. Computer generated journaling strips are also great way to journal and I have used those a lot, too. There are many handwriting fonts available and I have several that look similar to my own writing that I will use, if I don't want to hand write. The choice is yours! In this example I combined the pre-printed jounaling and with handwriting on the pre-made journaling strips from the Image and Phrase Stickers.

Are you ready to tell your story this week? How about you readers that are following along with Brandin's journey.....any journaling tips to share?

Imagine

Blessed_4

Blessed_1
i never imagined

that I would be

where I am

today.

i always hoped

prayed

wished...

but never

imagined it would happen.

i am blessed...

Blessed_2

this week I was assigned to make a page about me.

i thought, YEA!...this will be fun ;o)

But then

no

photos

of

me.

i had to crop my husband out of this.

HA!

why are there no photos of the mom

of the wife

of us?

my husband looked through his iPhone tonight & kept shouting out

"I got one!"...

i would look

and most of the reaction was "Delete That One!"

haha...

this was a nice page to do.

Blessed_5

i attempted cutting & layering! ~ woah ~ only do this if you have a vacuum under your scissors ~ HA!

Blessed_6

I also used scraps to layer elements. It was stress free & I had fun doing that ~

Blessed_3

i love that i can include this in my children's books...

how their mom

imagined this life

& with hard work

and LOTS of love & support

it came true.

I am blessed

for my family

my friends

my business

& YOU.

This week I will be giving away a paperpack of Hollywood Vogue. It is such an easy line to use...so easy I need to start using another ~ hehe! I'd love to hear what makes you blessed...your family, your health, your creative selves...you all inspire me. xo

Wednesday's Winner and Advice!

So she is a pro and she doesn't even have to try! Anyone who can make a double page layout on their first attempt look THAT good, well it just isn't fair. I love that Brandin used pencil on her layout too. She has inspired me to do the same on my next layout.

And now onto this week's winner. Drum roll please......dddtddtdtdttdddtdtdtddddd. Congratulations to SANDRA!

That is such a nice layout. I´m not so keen on making double layouts. But I love how yours turned out.
The wired florals are sooo beautiful! I´d love to use them on a fabric project like an album. :)

Posted by: Sandra | October 19, 2010 at 12:47 AM

Sandra, please email me at dmarie@websterspages(dot)com with your shipping information!

And this week I will chime in with my 2 cents. I LOVE, I mean absolutely ADORE All about Me layouts. In fact, they are my favorite layouts to create. I even taught several classes on the subject because I found that there were hundreds of women out there who had NEVER tried one before and this made me sad. So Brandin, I speak not only to you but anyone who is reading that perhaps hasn't taken the time or has been too intimidated to create a layout about themselves. PLEASE, ohhh pretty please, take the time this week to try it. I find when I create a layout about myself, that my pages tend to reflect the real me, in both an artistic sense ( it is very liberating ) and in a personal sense. I tend to reveal more on a page than I ever would in a conversation. I can be spurred forth by a song or perhaps a new pair of shoes. I have created AAM layouts with nothing but a CD and song titles for a soundtrack of my life all the way to ones that were strictly composed of words from the heart. I encourage you to let your inhibitions fall to the floor, to let it all go..Turn on your favorite CD and let your hands and your heart do the rest. I leave you with one of my favorite Webster's layouts, using one of my favorite Webster's lines (Postcards from Paris). I handed the camera over to Zoe, who captured this picture. I encourage you do that some time as well (just keep the camera away from Pat LOL). It is awesome to see yourself through your children's eyes.

Assignment 7: All About ME

Good Morning, Brandin! Lucy here with this week's assignment: All About ME. Just a couple of guidelines for completing this assigment: include a photo of yourself and journaling. Simple, right?

'Me' pages are so important to create as a memory keeper for you family and are difficult for a lot of us. I think that is because, a large percentage of us are moms with children and we find it difficult to focus on ourselves. Especially at times when so much effort is going into our family and lives. Not that we don't enjoy (most) of it...hehe, but seriously, don't you want your children to know you - as you were in your 30's or wherever you are? I know my memories of my mom at my age are pretty vague but I wish I knew what she thought about, her dreams, her challenges.

Believe me, I'm speaking to myself this morning as I type this......I have 100's of pages of my daughter and not that I don't treasure each and every one, but what will she remember about me? And not just for your children, but the opportunity to look back and remember and see your own life, from your perspective. Time blurs out the details, and even now, there are things I wished I put down.

Pages about you don't have to be all introspective and deep, it could be as simple as a list of your favorite things, right now. A photo of you with your best friend. Doing something that makes you happy. Photos from your childhood are great, too. You've come so far in your scrapbooking journey....why not document that?

I can't wait to see your 'ME' page! Go tell your story.

3_5
ok, so a DOUBLE layout challenge...

so much for taking it easy on me :o)

3_4
although i realized that

you don't have to turn every page into an art form.

i'm letting my photo's take over.

3_3
is this still hard for me?

yep!

but my goal is documenting my story.

is my story still being told?

i think so.

a few things i like about this layout.

i used pencil to write. LOVE it.

other than the fact that i could erase,

i loved the organic feel of the pencil.

i also loved using the wire florals.

3_1
more versatile & EASY than i thought.

{ha-ha}...yes, I should have already known that, huh? ;o)

do you want some?

this week i'm giving away a package of them. they're selling out FAST so i'd love to send you some. let me know how you would use them & we'll choose a lucky lady {or man...any man out there?} this week for our GIVEAWAY.

now, let's see what's coming my way next!?....;o)
