Designer Notes:

This Blocks of Time Designer Cardstock is a great way to get a lot of pattern on your page while just using one sheet of paper! To add a little dimension to the background I machine stitched it so that it has more of a quilted look. I adhered my photo in the center and then worked on adding bits of embellishments in each block. You can see that I also used a few pop dots under the stickers and stamped images, again just wanted to add a bit of dimension. I spliced the Banner Glitter Sticker to add some visual interest to the top of the page. The photo frame stamp from the Click Click set was a perfect place to house my journaling!

Project Life-ey

Today’s post is by DT member Vivian Keh… Here We Go!

Have you been meaning to join the project life movement, but find yourself straining to get on board?  As for me, I completely DIG the idea of recording the precious gems embedded within our everyday lives.  But, the idea of having a page for every single week?  For now, I can only respond with, "Get outta here!"  How on earth do folks find the time do that?  Hats off to those of you that do.  Large albums and large sleeves?  I'm thinking a more monthly venture for moi in a rather casual format.

So I'm pleased to announce that I'm embarking on a Project Life-ey adventure, my own take on the ever popular movement.  This hybrid journal/album will not contain evidence of birthdays, anniversaries, parties, nor any other "major" stuff.  Rather, my plan is to capture the highs AND the lows, not only the moments that infuse my every day with gratitude and joy, but also those occasionally unsavory experiences that challenge me to grow.

How did I get this party started?  I chose a solid DITTO binder that holds 8 1/2 x 11 in pages.

Great opportunity here to rock this smaller layout size! The sheets are also DITTO, made of a nice substantial cardstock, replete with calendars on the front and large open journaling lines on the back.  The pages are ready to go as is or to be embellished/distressed to suit your personal style.

My first page was inspired by a trinket that has somehow followed me through my many moves across the country.

So happy I still own this little memento, because it perfectly recalls the fun times the two of us have shared - doing hammed up kung fu on the sidewalk in Chinatown, dancing our brains out in West Hollywood, rollerblading in Venice.  During a recent road trip back to LA (main pic), the two of us had a chance to reminisce over a huge meal in Koreatown. For the layout, I used the carefree ki Memories "Hot Date" papers, stickers, tapes, and embellishments in combination with masking/spritzing, and some fun stitching.

The backside of a sheet of ki "Hearts Graphite" Lace Cardstock served as a mask, which I spritzed with an opaque white.

Ultimately, the splatters across the page brought a nice cohesiveness to the varied colors and patterns in the layout.  After the surface dried, I added all of my embellishments along with a vibrant Hambly transparency that coordinated nicely with the patterned papers.

project lifeey2

I nestled a bit of journaling behind the transparency.

As some of you may have noticed, I'm a wordy gal :-).  With this format, I'm going to do a bit of journaling on the fronts of my pages.

And reserve the entire back of the page, which comes conveniently preprinted with lines, for longer meditations.

I'd like to share with you another page for this Project Life-ey journal that features my princess, Pupusa.  It documents our recent discovery of why this tiny pooch will sporadically and most enthusiastically roll around on the grass when we walk.

project lifeey1

I stamped one of my fav heart stamps from the Hampton Art/ Doodlebug Love Life Stamp Set in the calendar squares to represent the joy she gives us each and every day, allowing the paper from the DITTO inserts to casually show through.  Using one of the bold Doodlebug border stamps from the Hampton Art/ Doodlebug IC0160 Borders Cling Set helped to ground my focal image, as well.  This page combines ki Memories with a whole lotta Doodlebug - stamps, buttons, pearls, as well as a shaped Doodlebug card, the side of which I stitched up so that it could hold journaling.

In the bottom right corner of the layout, I used a Hampton Art PS0361 Brief Moments Woodblock Stamp that perfectly expresses what I'm going for with this Project Life-y journal.

Hope this inspires you to participate in the PL movement in whatever way suits you best!

Until next time - Vivian

Tribute Tray

Today’s post is brought to you by Gloria Stengel you may have seen it over on Michaels website for their September stamp feature aka STAMPTEMBER!

090312-Banner-03

This tray is a tribute to my father-in-law, who passed away right before Father's Day in 2011, from cancer. He was only sick for a few months before he died at the age of 73. He was a very strong, and vibrant man, who love life. I wanted to make a tray to celebrate him. We were "blessed beyond measure" to have him in our lives. I was especially blessed to have him in my life as he stepped into a father role for me when my own dad passed away suddenly, in 1997.

Dad-Tray-1

To make the tray:

1. Trim 12 pieces of black cardstock to fit the openings of the tray, approximately 2 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches each. Use these pieces of cardstock as your canvas for each ATC configuration.

2. ATC 1: Using black archival ink, stamp the eye chart from the Eye Chart stamp set onto the burlap. Allow ink to dry, and then fray the edges of the burlap. Tie twine in a knot at the top of the burlap. Use fabric glue to adhere the burlap to the black cardstock. Ink chipboard letters with Schoolhouse pigment ink. Allow to dry and attach the letters to the bottom of the burlap. Adhere the ATC to the tray.

clip_image004

3. ATC 2: Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than the black cardstock. Attach the paper to the cardstock. Stamp "memories" from the Time Pieces stamp set onto cream cardstock with black archival ink. Trim and distress with antiquing ink. Attach to the bottom of the ATC. Cut three stars from cork. Spray two stars with Crimson glimmer mist. Allow ink to dry, then attach stars to the ATC; use foam tape to raise one of the stars. Adhere the ATC to the tray.

4. ATC 3: Attach a photo to the black cardstock and adhere to the tray.

clip_image006

5. ATC 4: Trim corrugated paper to slightly smaller than the black cardstock. Attach the paper to the cardstock. Stamp the World Travel Words stamp onto cream cardstock with Schoolhouse pigment ink. Emboss with clear embossing powder. Trim to slightly smaller than corrugated paper. Use an ink applicator tool to add antiquing ink over the stamped image. Allow ink to dry. Wipe ink from the embossed areas with a paper towel. Attach stamped and embossed image to corrugated paper. Cut a heart from cork. Spray with Crimson glimmer mist. Allow ink to dry, and then attach heart to the ATC. Tie floss to a button and using an adhesive dot, attach the button to the heart. Adhere the ATC to the tray.

6. ATC 5: Attach a photo to the black cardstock and adhere to the tray.

7. ATC 6: Using Leather pigment ink, stamp Scala Stamp onto the canvas. Allow ink to dry, and then fray the edges of the canvas. Use fabric glue to adhere the canvas to the black cardstock. Adhere the ATC to the tray.

clip_image008

8. ATC 7: Emboss cream cardstock with Distressed Stripes embossing folder. Apply leather pigment ink to raised areas and emboss with brown embossing powder. Trim embossed paper to slightly smaller than the black cardstock. Ink panel with antiquing ink and attach the paper to the cardstock. Stamp the text from the Vintage Bicycle stamp set onto cream cardstock with Dark Cashmere antiquing ink. Trim to size and use an ink applicator tool to add antiquing ink to the edges of the stamped image. Allow ink to dry. Stamp the pocket watch image from the Time Pieces stamp set onto the text with Mossy pigment ink. Emboss with clear embossing powder. Roll and distress the edges of the panel, and adhere to the embossed paper. Glue the ATC to the tray

9. ATC 8: Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than the black cardstock. Attach the paper to the cardstock. Stamp Distressed Words image onto cream cardstock with Dark Cashmere antiquing ink. Trim and distress with Mossy and Patina pigment ink. Allow ink to dry. Stamp clock from Time Pieces stamp set over the text with Leather pigment ink. Emboss with clear embossing powder. Add a mini brad to the center of the clock. Trim and attach to the printed paper. Cut a star from corrugated paper. Glue mini clothes pin to the star and then attach star to the ATC with foam tape. Adhere the ATC to the tray.

10. ATC 9: Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than black cardstock and attach. Stamp Blessed Beyond Measure onto cream cardstock with Schoolhouse pigment ink. Emboss with clear embossing powder. Trim image to size and distress with antiquing ink. Cut the stamped image in half. Adhere one-half of the image to the printed paper and attach ATC to the tray.

11. ATC 10: Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than black cardstock and attach. Adhere the other half of the stamped image to the printed paper, making sure to line it up to match ATC 9, and attach ATC to the tray.

12. ATC 11: Fray the edges of the burlap and attach to black cardstock. Trim printed paper to slightly smaller than the burlap. Stamp the Distressed Clock image onto the printed paper with Leather pigment ink. Ink and smudge the edges of the paper with Leather pigment ink. Allow ink to try and attach printed paper to the burlap. Adhere the ATC to the tray.

Make it Monday: Me Siento, Fresca

Vivian here today to share with you a layout documenting a recent frolic in the pool with our pooches.  If you've been to Vegas during the summer months, you know what it feels like to "bake" under our very powerful desert sun.  We are so very thankful for our pool - without it, I'd constantly be whining, wilting like a delicate flower lol.  A few days ago, my man and I brought the dogs in for a respite from the 110 degree weather.  For our boy cocker, Mabu, the pool = heaven.  No coaxing necessary.  But our tiny mutt, Pupusa, whom I rescued off the streets of East LA, has never been a fan.  A Pupusa, by the way, is a savory Salvadorean pancake :-).  It has been "a process" this summer acclimating her to the water, one which I find quite entertaining.

Me Siento Fresca Layout

(“I feel… Fresh”)

I feel fresh

I happen to be one of those dog crazies who MUST have been a dog in a past life.  Our dogs are an integral part of our lives and so they will show up from time to time in my projects.  If you aren't a dog-lover, please bear with.  Techniques to follow below!  I used the bold Hampton Art/ Hot Fudge Studio SC0188 Numbers Stamp Set

and one of my favorite woodblock stamps, the Hampton Art/ Hot Fudge Studio PS0620 Flowers Woodblock Stamp

to create these 2 1/2 in. square mini-compositions.

While individually striking and rather simple to stamp (perfect for cards and tags), collectively they create unity in a layout or other larger format project!  The numbered squares can neatly document a variety of progressions/transformations – the progression of a party, the transformation of a growing child, the stages of a rehabilitation, and in this case, Pupusa's journey of facing and overcoming her fears!

"No me gusta..."

In stages 1 and 2 above, note the displeasure in her expressive eyes and body language.  Then, feelin' goo - oo - ood  in stages 3 and 4 below...

"Pero, ahora me siento muy fresca!"

"Pero, ahora me siento muy fresca!" she exclaims with major zoomies and prolonged rolling and flailing in the grass.  Why does she speak Spanish, you ask?  Part chihuahua, straight from the heart of a 100% Latino neighborhood, that's a no-brainer lol.

As you can see below, Pupusa is gradually getting more comfortable and returning to the pool's edge for more!  The journaling spot shown here nestles behind this photo.

Every day, I find myself in awe that such incredible personality and bountiful joy can come in so tiny a package.

As for the stamping, first I stamped pleasing compositions onto 2 1/2 in. cardstock squares that I had cut out.

I just used dye ink - if bleeding occurred, all the better, as I enjoy the mixing of colors that happens spontaneously on the page. Next, I colored in the blooms with an assortment of markers and glaze pens.

The glaze pens provided a bit of resist, preserving selected areas from further applications of various media.  Inspired by the rustic brown-eyed Susan's that bloomed profusely for us here despite the dry heat, I added some oranges to the mix.

Then I spritzed with Smooch Spritz in "Sea Kiss."  Originally, I had planned to pat away the liquid that pooled on top of my resist below.  But I ended up rather enjoying the pooling and decided to leave as is.

But would the effect stand the test of time and handling?  Just to be sure, I smushed the entire surface into a watermark ink pad, sprinkled the surface with clear embossing powder, and then set my heat tool on it for this final effect below.

For the dimensional blooms, I first cut funky asymmetrical circular shapes from an equally funky sheet of typographic cardstock.  Then I inked the edges with a bit of distress ink.

I curled the edges with a bone folder, notched the bloom...

laid down a thin strip of glue along the notch, and cinched it in to add some dimension.

Using easy glue dots, I adhered the smaller circular shapes inside the larger ones.

After affixing handmade buttons or pearls to the centers of each bloom, I finally arranged the flowers in a few clusters on this very colorful page.

Thanks for visiting with me here, folks.  If you haven't had enough of me, hop on over to my blog - oodles of inspiration await you there!

Make it Monday: Explore

Today’s post is brought to you by design team member Adora Concepcion!

When I think of outdoors, grunge always come into mind as well! With that thoughts in my mind I created this mini album of my very first hike with my family. It was a challenge of course for me :)  but I took it and was glad and proud that I finish a 6 mile hike with a 2400 elevation!!! I think it’s pretty good for a not so fit person. :)

clip_image002

Supplies:

Stamps

Hampton Art licensed 7Gypsies stamp – Abundance

Hampton Art licensed 7Gypsies – For the Record

Hampton Art licensed G45 stamp set – Tropical Travelogue

Hampton Art licensed Diffusions Art stamps – Butterflies are Free

Hampton Art licesensed Art Warehouse stamp set – Carpe Diem

Hampton Art Signature collection stamp set – Word Borders

Inks

Clearsnaps Smooch Spritz – Sun Kissed, Green Olive and Splash

Color Box Archival ink – Wicked Black,

Color Box Fluid chalk ink – Cyan

clip_image002[6]

Designer Notes:

For background, I first spray painted each page with a regular spray can paint, then set it aside to dry. I use smooch spritz sporadically on the page for added color and texture. Then full my pictures out and attach it on one side of the page. I used transparencies on top of my photos to add a more ragged look. I really had fun creating this album and love how it turned out, hope you’ll enjoy looking at it as well.

TGIF: “Explore” Mini Book

Hello All! Wendy here and continuing to share up my CHA Summer Show 2012 projects revealed up in the Hampton Art booth for 7 Gypsies. I believe it’s time for a mini! In this project, I made a quick capture of my many worldly travels in using the really cool 7 Gypsies tag envelopes and tag inserts as my base and structure for this mini. Also, the mini envelopes make it possible to add in little bits of “hidden” notes of journaling and memorabilia collected from the journey.

1. Collaging together various stamps can bring an interesting effect to your pages.

2. Sometime simple pages are nice too with just the photo and a quick caption to really enhance a nice photo, even in a mini style.

IMAGE3 (2)

3. My vintage typewriter stays out at all times on one desk in my art studio which makes for quick and easy access for journaling. Also, I like to mix it up with stamping and journaling together on some pages.

IMAGE4 (2)

IMAGE5 (2)

IMAGE13

4. I typically stamp in a nice crisp black archival ink, however, as seen in these pages, sometimes I like to add some “pop” with a color ink.

IMAGE6

IMAGE14

IMAGE17

5. Sometimes stamping as stand-alone on a page is just enough, from a quote to a background stamp. In these pages, I simply love these quotes/sayings and the random text background stamp!

IMAGE15

6. Here I mixed in some layering of stamping along with snippets of postage stamps cut from the 7 Gypsies paper tape for a neat effect on the travel theme!

7. And don’t forget that stamping looks great on the back of your album too!

Hope you enjoyed my project!
